AFFAIRS IN GEORGETOWN Early Morning Fire Oreates Considerable Exciten ent. Officers of Geo. U. Morris Post Chosen —Mrs, Burch Has Returned Home—Other Notes. At 1 o'clock this morning the lower cen- tral part of Georgetown was awakened by, the cry of fire. The flames were discovered by Officer Sullivan and Sergt. Valkman in the confectionery store of Henry Backen- heimer, 1218 32d street. The building a: tecked was a three-story frame, the upper floors being used by the owner, Mrs. M. A. Waters. ‘The store room had a considerable amount of inflammable stuf in it, and the fire fed greedily. By the time the alarm had been turned in and the engine arrived the interior of, the room was practically gutted. The fire and smoke then mounted the upper portions of the house. In the meantime Sergt. Valk-! man had awakened the Waters family. All the members clambered out in safety. Smoke and water did damage to the dweil- ing portion. j The loss to the whole building will prob-, ably amount to about $1,000. Mrs. Waters had no insurance. The fire is supposed to, have originated through a defect in the peanut roaster of the confectioner. Officers Elected. At a meeting of Geo. U. Morris Post, Ga A. R., last night, at the post headquarters,) the following officers were elected for the ensuing year: Commander, James T. Clem= ents; S. V. commander, C. M. Robinson; J. V. commander, R. E. The local post pro- poses to entertain the visiting comrades in a substantial manner. The matter of pro~ viding tombstones for all unmarked Union graves in West End cemeteries, which was originally taken up by the local post, has been assumed charge of by a central com~ mittee of the Department of the Potomac, who have widened the work so as to take in the unmarked graves of the entire Dis- trict. Last evening, just before dark, Policeman Hess of the Sth precinct, while riding through the Soldiers’ Home grounds, found the dead body of an old veteran named William Langanburg. He had evidently committed suicide, for near his body was found a knife and death had re from loss of blood, an artery in the left wrist hav- ing been severed.
