It ‘ls pretty certain the conven- se- | tion will not be held so early. Gen. Alger wants to head the Michigan delegation, and there Is a general disposition to let him have it. He has carefully laid away his These newcomers embrace | presidential boom and now aspires to be Secretary of War in the cabinet of the next President, if republican. By being at the head of the Michigan delegation he would be in a position to throw the Michi- gan vote to the right man at the right time, and would reinforce his claim for recognition later in the season by a sub- stantial draft upon his bank account to the credit of the campaign fund. Gen. Alger was booked for Secretary of War in President Harrison's cabinet, but he was turned down when Senator Sherman threat- ened to oppose his confirmation. Sherman's enmity was based on the transactions in the republican convention of 1888, to which he refers in his book. Gen. Alger has seen fit to deny that he bought the southern delegates pledged to Sherman. The only uncertainty that accompanies his candidacy is what Pingree will do about it. Pingree may himself want to head the Michigan delegation, but f% is hardly probable that he will go on to smash things so early in the game. Senator Burrows wants to be another delegate at large, and would like to pre- side over the convention, elther as tem- porary or permanent chairman. The Pin- gree forces are much more liable to make a fight on him than on Alger, and in that event would probably put Charles R. Sligh of this city to the front. Thomas J. O’Brien of this city, Charles H. Hackley of Michigan and Perry Hannah of Tra- verse City are among other possibilities. If the convention were to be held today the Michigan dclegation would be sold for McKinley. Allison, however, has many friends, especially among those who, while they admire McKinley, believe the views he entertains and the idea he represents, would put the party on the defensive from the very start. In the last convention Michigan was against Harrison, and he is the last man Michigan would shout for in the next convention. SS NORTH CAROLINA FOR McKINLEY. fieans There Said to Be a Unit for Him. Special Correspondence of The Evening Star. RALEIGH, N. C., November 30, 1895. Senator Pritchard ts sparing no pains to work up and develop a boom for McKinley for President, end his success is said to be gratifying. Republicans in this state are said to be almost a unit for McKinley. Senator Pritzhard assures me this Is true, The result of the late elections is con- strued here as being very favorable to Mc- Kinley. Congressman Settle is for Reed, but not only is his following small, but the Congressman has aroused some violent antagonisms within his own party. ‘The negro vote is practically a unit, and republican. It will give us trouble to man- ag2 it. There is little effort to give life to a faction, but its following is small. The rank and file await the orders of the par- ty’s committee. Senator Butler is already at work push- ing his plan for the capture of all the Senate committees by the silver men. Hd said to The Star correspondent that it would require no effort to make this cap- ture, provided the silver Senators kept their pledges. He began his work in this direction three weeks or more ago, and declares positively that a majority of all the Senators are pledged to silver. There is good reason to believe that within the past few days he, has become convinced that he can hold only the populist Sena- tors to such a pledge. Se LYNCHING IN TENNESSEE. Rep Colored Men Hanged by a Mob After Conviction. Joseph Robinson and Ozias McGahey, both colored, were taken from the jail at Fayetteville, Tenn., Friday night by a mob composed of people from Lincoln and Mar- shall counties and hanged. ‘The men had been taken from Nashville to Lewisburg, Marshall county, in the morning, tried for attempted felonious as- sault, convicted and sentenced to the full penalty of the law, and a train had been held to take them to Tracy City. At Fayetteville, in the adjoining county, sympathizers of the Marshall county mob held up the train and forced the side-track- ing of the car containing the sheriff, guards and prisoners, over the protests of the lead- ing citizens. The sheriff then placed the prisoners in jail, from which they were taken. That night Gov. Turney received a tele- gram from the sheriff calling for troops. One hundred of the State Guard were speedily under arms and at the station, ready to leave at 9 o'clock. Later a telephone message was received stating that the jail had been stormed ] the prisoners lyrcehd. Fayetteville is 1 miles by rail from Nashville.
