THE EVENING STAR, MONDAY, NOVEMBER 25, 1895-TWELVE PAGES. SUBURBAN NEWS ANACOSTIA. Tt 1s understood that at the meeting of locked-oul drivers of the Anacostia Rail- way Company which has been called for tonight several members of the Street Rail- way Assembly of Washington will be ent. A special meeting of the latter was held at Buneh’s Hal, in Washington, Sat- urday night, and steps taken to encourage any of the strikers who may have become weakened at the outlook to believe that times will soon be betier for them, and then the'r financial condition will be greatly improve As a first step in this direction the m bers of the assembly determined to in: Ss themselves in a ball to be held shortly for the benefit of the strikers. There is talk of another mass meeting in Anacostia for the purpose of expressing sympathy for the locked-out drivers, but the movement Is discredited by many of the citizens who are most pronounced in their opposition to the railway company and active in the cause of the strikers. These persons say that the holding of the last mass meeting in Anacostia was a mistake, as many of the speakers were so radical m their remarks and advised that such ex- treme measures be taken to injure the com- pany as to cause a change of opinion on the part of many citizens who had up to that time actively supported the cause of the strikers and had when riding in the coaches contributed funds to keep them running. it is understood that the managers of the "bus line will today or tomorrow take the boxes which have been used as a mute ap- peal for a nickel from each passenger out of the coaches and have it thus made plain that no one will be expected to pay for his or her ride, depending for the support of the line on donations from the various la- bor organizations in the District. No secret is made of the fact that it is the hope of the members of the Street Ratl- way Assembly by carrying’ passengers free 4n fact as well as in name from Anacostia to the terminus of the cable line at the Navy Yard to attract to the coaches so much of the present travel enjoyed by the railway company as to cause serious loss to the latter. The funeral of Mr. Patrick J. Reagan, for a long while a resident of Anacostia and for many years a valued employe at St. Eliza- beth's Hospital, took place this morning from St. Teresa's Church. The interment was made In Congress‘onal cemetery. Mr. Reagan had been ill for a long time, and his death was not unexpected. He was president of St. Teresa’s branch of the con- ference of St. Vincent de Paul and one of the secretartes of St. Teresa’s branch of the Catholic Knights of Amer‘ca. The death of Mr. Reagan makes two of the Anacostia members who haye died during the year, the other being Police Sergeant Kerby, an occurrence which has not before taken place since the local branch of the order was es- tablished. ——_—>— FALLS CHURCH.
