The Excelsior building at Canal and Jack- son streets, Chicago, and an eight-story brick structure immediately adjoining it, at 171 to 173 South Canal street, both owned by Warren Springer, were burned yesterday afternoon. Not less than thirteen manu- facturing plants in the two buildings were burned out, including the Shober-Carque- ville Lithographing Company, the Charles Emmerich Feather Company and the large estavlishment of Strauss, Eisendrath & Drom, Total loss is not less than $620,000. The fire was a hard one to subdue, and was attended with no little danger. The escape of several hundred girls trom the Straugs, Bisendrath & Drom factory was made pos- sible only by coolness and decision. A num: ber of giris suffered from fright and sus- tained bru The fire started by a dust explosion in the renovating room of Charl Emmerich & Co., on the fourth floor of the Excelsior building, and spread so rapidly that the workmen in that part of the establishment had barely time to give the alarm and get to the street in safety. “The Wilton butiding, as well as others in the immediate neighborhood, caught fire several times, but the flames were quickly extinguished. Nearly all the losses are covered by tnsur- arce. Springer was fully protected, as were all the other hy losers. —— oo ____ Fire which broke out in the livery stable of J. R. Koon, on 14th street, San Fran- cisco, Monday burned a dozen houses. Twenty-five horses perished in the stable, and Mike Sheehan, a fireman, was fatally injured by falling timbers.
