AND at ocll-tt — William Krauer W Chopped to Pieces by Jacob Beresheim, Of all the catalogue of recent crime the worst item was the horrible slaughter of William Krauer, the restaurant keeper, who was lately found chopped to pieces with a hatchet at his place of business, No. 1252 2d avenue, New York. The confession of fourteen-year-old Jacob Beresheim, a Kitch- en boy of No. 48 Lang street, Newark, N. J., that he killed Kraver, and hfs reasons for the mumer, make one of the most hor- rible chapters in the history of wickedness, Most of the revelations given by Beresheim show a condition of depravity that could not be described in a newspaper. The boy. is the embodiment of moral obliquity. In a signed statement, published Thursday, Acting Captain O'Brien, chief of the detec- tive bureau, said in relation to the efforts of his men to locate the criminal: “The ar- rest of the murderer of Krauer is, I think, only a matter of time, as we have a good description of him.” This implied promise O'Brien carried out. The murderer left no clue as to his iden- It was entirely due to the reasoning er of the police and their industrious digging down into the Hfe history of Krauer that they laid their hands upon the boy Beresheim. When he was caught there re | no evidence against him, and the police none until he himself gave it to them. The prisoner, it seems, was born entirely without moral sense. He was one of a group of boys similarly constituted with whom Krauer surrounded himself. Krauet from all accounts was morally inferior ta the most depraved wild beast. He had sunk into the lowest depths of perversion. Beresheim, after making his confession on Saturday, was locked in a cell at policq headquarters. When the detectives tool him out yesterday he said that he had not slept well.
