THE EVENING STAR, FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 15, 1895—SIXTEEN PAGES. SUBURBAN NEWS FALLS CHURCH. An enthusiastic meeting of the District Lodge of Good Templars was held with Rising Star Lodge at Dunn Loring, near here, Wednesday. This district embraces the lodges of the order in the counties of Fairfax, Alexandria, Prince William and Alexandria city. District Chief Templar J. D. Payne presided, with most of the district Officers present. The committee on creden- tials reported that delegates were present rom each of the counties named. The Dis- trict Lodge degree was conferred on quite @ number cf new members. The secretary reported a membership in the jurisdiction of Rev. D. L. Rathbun of Falls Church was appointed chairman of ®2 committee on state of the order, Mrs, 1. B. Staats of Vienna chairman of finance committee, and E. F. Rerebeck of Falls Church chairman of committee on award of the district banner. J. M. Thorne made a lengthy and interesting report of the pro- ceedings of the Grand Lodge of the state, which met in September in Lynchburg, which he attended as the representative of the District Lodge. The chairman of the committee on resisting the granting of I- censes by the courts of the counties re- ported that in Prince William county an election on the license question was defeat- ed through the efforts of the committee. The commitiee on award of banner reported that Rising Star Lodge had made the larg- est percentage during the term, and the banner was presented to the lodge by Rev. D. L. Rathbun of Falls Church, and re- eeved for the lodge by Mr. R. 3. Porter. By a vote of 48 to 17 for Fairfax Court House, Falls Church was selected as the ext place of meeting of the District Lodge, in February. A resolution was unanimous- ly adopted expressing the thanks of the District Lodge to Gov. O'Ferrall for his ac- tive eiforts In breaking up gambling dens in the county of Alexandria, A resolution was also adopted instructing the executive committee of the district to prepare and have presented to the legislature @ bill re- pealing the present excise law for the county, so that the question of granting licenses shall be reinvested in the county court, and that the members-elect to the legislature from Fairfax, Prince William and Alexandria counties and city of Alex- be uested to use their endeavors bill enacted into a law. The Waverley Club meeting at the opera house this week was largely attended. The mumber of most interest on the program Was the address of Rev. Wm. C. Brian. E. W. Walker sang and Mr. N. E. y recited. Mr. Lee M. Lipscomb of this town has departed for a tour of the southern states, in connection with his Post Office Depart- ment duties at Washington. Funeral exercises over the remains of Mrs. Martha A, Meem, relict of the late George A. Meem, were held Thursday morn- ing at St. Rose Catholic Church. Rey. M. J. Riordan preached the sermon. Inter- Ment was made in the cemetery adjoluing the church. Mrs. Meem was the oldest in- habitant, and died of paralysis, aged eighty- two. She was an extensive real estate owner, and leaves a large family connec- tion. Last night Gaithersburg Lodge, I. O. G. T., No. 217, met in its new hall, corner Diamond and Summit avenues, and in- ducted the following new officers into ser- vice: George W. Selby, C. T.; Emily C. Poole. V. T.; B. Jennie Waters, S. J. T.; J. J. Swartzback, Sec.; C. Scott Duvall, F. 8.; H. Miles, T.; E. Jennie Waters, Chap.; S. T. F. Sterick, jr., M.; Bertha Smith, G.; Chas. A. Poole, Sen. Mr. Thos. J. Chinn, for several years pastor of the Rockville Presbyterian Church, has assumed the pastorship of a church of that denomination at Suffolk, Va. The M. E. Church South at Goshen, this county, was on Wednesday the scene of a brilliant wedding, the parties to the same being Mr. Uriah Wilcoxen Griffith, son of Uriah H. Griffith, esq., of Laytonsville, and Miss Laura Eleanor Waters, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. L. Macubbin Waters. The church was decorated in an artistic manner, with a profusion of evergreens, chrysanthe- mums and other autumn flowers, and pre- sented a,beautiful appearance. The bridal party entered the church to the music cf the wedding march, and at the altar were received by Rev. W. H. Kammill of Staua- ton, Va., who performed the marriage zere- mony. The bride was attended by her sis- ter, Miss Mamie Waters, as best girl, and Misses Bessie Waters, Irene Waters, Sallie Jones and Carrie Blount as bridesmaids, Mr. Josiah J. Hutton acted as best man. ‘The ushers were Messrs. Henry H. Griffith, L. M. Waters, jr., Samuel Blount and Harry Towers of Washington. The fair young Lride was attired in a gown of white silk, with veil, and carried a large bunch of La France roses. The best girl appeared in pink silk, and carried white carnations. The bridesmaids were in white organdie, carrying pink carnations, The groom, hest man and ushers were in the regular full dress. At the close of the ceremony a large- ly attended reception was held at the home of the parents of the bride, after which Mr. and Mrs. Griffith left for an extendad rorthern trip. The presents to the bride were in great profusion, embracing the use- ful and ornamental. The repubiicans held a rousing meeting Wednesday evening at Doc Garges’ Palo Alto House, in Bladensburg, in hon- or of their recent victory in Mary- land. The hotel was decorated with flags and brilliantly illuminated for the occasion. A large procession formed in front of the Palo Alto House, headed by Emanuel Simms as chief marshal, with Daniel Johnson, Prince E. Stubbs and David Deck as assistant marshals. Music was furnished by a portion of the First National Colored Band of Washington. There were a number of mounted men in line, and numerous torches, banners and lances were carried by the enthusiastic republicans. Perry H. Carson, Aaron Bradshaw, chai man of the republican central commit- tee of the District of Columbia, Lemuel Bradshaw, Lewis O. Wissman and George Holmts and Thos. H. Latimer, successful candidates for the legislature and county surveyor, were among the prominent repub- licans present at the meeting. Emanuel S.mms presided. Speeches were made by Perry Carson and E. B. Welborne. me After the speaking the procession passed through the principal streets of Blandens- burg and then visited Hyattsville, going through the principal streets of the village, stopping to serenade Mr. F. The next meeting of the ‘club will be held two weeks hence at the resi- dence of Miss Florence Carr, and Shake- speare’s play of “Hamlet” wlll be the sub- ject for discussion. The Bas Bleu Literary Society met at Melrose Wednesday afternoon. Quotations ere given from Coleridge by the -lifferent members of the society. The prozram, though short, was interesting. Readings were given by Misses Aman, Walbridge and Wallace. Instrumental music was rendered by Misses Briscoe, Bowen and Dent. Miss Nora Shaffer read an essay on “The Life and Works of Coleridge.” Miss Whiting read an original story entitled ‘The Ghost Walk," and Miss Delia Lester read the prize essay. The Hyattsville Assembly met Wednesday evening at the residence of Mr. and Mrs, T. J. Van Dorn, it being the second social meeting of the club. The evening was spent in an exceedingly pleasant manner, music and old-fashioned dances being enjoyed by all. Vocal solos by Miss Corinne MacFar- land, Mrs. Jos. Aman and Mr. Truman Post, and piano selections by Miss Leila Aman and Mrs. Van Dorn added very materially to the enjoyment of the meeting.
