M,, and those of Electa Chapter, Order of the Eastern Star, hope to raise $10,000 by the bazaar which is to be opened under their auspices tonight at Masonic Hall, for the benefit of the lodge. It will requice the large sum named to pay off ac- crued indebtedeness and to provide for fu- ture contingencies. Prather, Saturday about noon smoke was discover- ea issuing from the roof of the large frame pullding standing on St. Paul street,near the railroad track, which was.used as a grocery store by Mr. W. J. Hopkins and a dwelling and boarding house by: Mrs. Umstead. An alarm was immediately given and well re- sponded to. From the first it was evident that it would be impossible to save the build- ing, and the work of removing the contents so well conducted that when the build- ing fell at 1:15 nearly everything on the first two floors had been carried to a place of safety. Mr. Hopkins’ loss is very slight. Mrs, Umstead lost nearly all ber household goods and clothes. ‘The building was owned by Mr. William H. Mannakee, and was a landmark for travelers on the Baltimore and Ohio railroad, having been built in 1872 by Mr. Knowles, and soon after the completion railroad. For years this was the only of note between Washington and ville, and Was used as a store, railroad station and post office. During the past summer Mr. Mannakee had had the building turned about, and in many ways improved the place. The erection of a new building will probably be commenced in a short time. ‘Phe Home Missionary and Ladies’ Aid So- cleties of the St. Paul's M. E. Church will meet Wednesday, from 11 to 4, at the home of Mrs. J. F. Stoek. Arrangements will be perfected for the oyster supper, to be held in the new town hail on November 20 and 21. Mrs. William M. Terrell and children left Saturday for a visit to Wilmington, Del. They will be away until December 1. Miss Helen Biakford of Washington has been spending a few days with her sister, Mrs. J. The revival services, which have been in progress at the Warner Memorial Presby- ‘an Chureh during the past week, met with such gratifying success that it was thought best to continue them during the pens week, beginning with Tuesday even- ne. A citizens’ meeting has been caJjled for Monday evening, at the Noyes library, to devise means of relief for the sufferers from the recent fire. Miss Bessie Perry has been spending a few days at home from the Fairview Academy at Gaithersburg. Mr. and Mrs. John Simpson, jr., have moved in Mrs. Hurdle’s house, on Metropoli- tan avenue. Mr. W,. 1. Simpson of Washington was the vest of his sister, Mrs. Helen Martin, on Sunday. Miss Anna Wilson of Washington has been the guest of Mr. and Mrs, J. W. Townsend. — HYATTSVILLE. Mr. and Mrs. John A. Ulle have issued in- vVitations for the marriage of their daugh- ter, Margaret E, Ulle, to Mr. Howard E. Donath, which will take place at St. John’s P. E. Church, Beltsville, Md., Wednesday, November 20, at 1 o'clock p.m. A pleasant dance was given last Friday evening at the old Hyatt mansion, on Bowie avenue, by the young people of the village. Those present were Misses Lulle Fuller, Katherine Combs, Julia Bulloch, Fannfe Mudd, Mary Wells, Hill, Mary Dorsey and Messrs. Towner, Wm. Van Loan, H. C. Dobbs, Brewn, Frick, Wert Dorsey and Archie Wells. Mr. Jchn G. Holden of this village has been promoted to the position of paying teller in the American Security and Trust Company of Washington. ‘The frame buildings west of the Baltimore and Ohio railroad tracks on Johnson avenue are being removed by the Washington and Maryland electric railway, in order to clear the way for the proposed route for the new Mr. Lewis D. Wine has ordered 5,000 shade trees to be planted in Wine and Johnson's second addition to Hyattsville. These trees will greatly improve the appearance of that . part of the town. Collins, chief of the United States fish exhibit at the world’s Columbian exposition, has returned from Chicago, where he attended the reunion of world’s fair chiefs, held in that city. The East Georgia Minstrels performed at the Academy of Music here Friday and Sat- urday nights. Miss Georgia Berry, who is teaching school in lower Prince George's, spent Saturday and Sunday with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. John Berry. Mr. John J. O’Hagan of Washington was the guest yesterday of Mr. Geo. W. Waters, is : Tone report of the auditor for the Post Office Department, which has just been completed for the fiscal year ending June 30, 18%5, shows that the gross receipts of Laurel pest office, which is a presidential office, are $2,229.66; total expenses, $1,553.40; net rev- enue, $676.26. Mr. and Mrs. William Penn, who have been residing in Baltimore, have removed to Laurel, where thcy wili reside with Mr. Penn’s parents, Mr. and Mrs. J. W. Penn, on Laurel avenue, corner of Washington avenue. Mr. Barnes Compton, jr., left today for “The Plains,” St. Mary’s county, where he will spend a couple of weeks hunting game. Miss Elva Milstead has returned from a week's visit to friends in Baltimore. The condition of Miss Katie Browning, Postmaster Flannery’s assistant, who is suf- fering with malarial fever, is quite serious. West of the Baptist Church last night delivered the sixth of his series of sermons on “If Christ Should Come to Brookland?" These addresses have been greatly appreciated by the people of Brook- land. The Mite Society of the Baptist Churgh will hold its meeting tomorrow night, for which an interesting program has been ar- ranged, Mr. Franklin T. Williams of Hamline Church conducted the Brookland Chapter of the Epworth League last night. ‘The Methodist congregation has been in- creasing gradually since the occupation of 4 the new church, and several heads of fam- ilies have been admitted #s members of the church. The Sunday schcol, of which Dr. T. Y. Hull is superintendent, is also gaining in numbers, fourteen pupils having been admitted recentiy. Today Miss Given, with the fourth grade, took possession of the town hall. Every- thing. has been put in readiness for the school, the two small adjoining rooms hay- ing been fixed up for cloak rooms. The fourth grade will now go from 9 to 3 o'clock, as will also the third grade. Miss Rosa Holmes has been appointed health teacher for the Brookland school. Miss S. S.
