Daverport, who several months ago went te Edinburgh, Scotlend, to see that their son‘Dana, who had been killed a short time ‘before on a railroad near that city, had proper inter- ment, have returned from their sad er- rand. The bereaved parents ha‘ the re- mains of their son removed from the part of the cemetery where they’ were first’ in- terred to a beautiful lot in the same ceme- tery and erected over the grave a stone, on which were inscribed the name, date of birth and date of death of the unfortunate young man. Mr. and Mrs. Davenport wer2 much grat- ified with the kindly reception they met with everywhere, especially among the pub- lic_officials. The construction of the new public school building at Congress Heights, for which an appropriation of $9,000 was made at the Jast session of Congress, has heen begun. The designs are very artistic, the main entrance being a copy of one of the doors of the transportation building at the world’s fair, Chicago. The buildng will, it is ex- pected, be ready for occupancy by Febru- ry 15. It is understood that steps are being taken for the organization of a lodge of Good Templars in Anacostia. The fire last week in the woods along Rock creek lasted until Thursday, when it was extinguished by the heavy rain. Much valuable timber was lost, and houses and barns endangered. One of the walls of the new brick school building now undergoing. completion has been condemned, and will have to be te- built. Dr. James White has left for Santa Monica, Cal., where he will join his wife and mother-in-law, and will settle there permanently. The B. E. The republican campaign in this county clesed on Saturday with mass meetings at the town hall, this place, during the after- noon and night. The meeting in the after- Toon was presided over by Mr. Arthur Stabler of Sandy Spring, who opened the same with some appropriate remarks, after which stirring speeches were delivered by Messrs. Wm. M. Marine and Charles L. Wilson of Baltimore and Wm. E. Meloy of Washington. Owing to the busy season among farmers, the hal! was not crowded, but the lack of numbers was made up by the enthusiasm of the audience, each one of the speakers being loudly applauded. The meeting at night was largely attend- ed, and was presided over by Mr. B. H. Warner of Kensington, who opened the same with a stirring address to the voters, which was well received. Thos. Dawson, candidate for state’s attorney, followed Mr. Warner, and although not having had any extended experience as a public speaker, he soon made it plain to the crowd that he was well posted on all the political igsues of the day. His many friends of both par- tles present were much pleased with his address. Mr. Dawson was followed by Maj. Daniel O'Driscoll of Takoma Park, his address receiving close attention, ofte:: interrupted by applause. The closing speech of the evening was made by Mr. Ashley M. Gould of Takoma Park, and was of much more than ordinary force and interest. He handled his subject with ease, and was both eloquent and logical. His criticism of the sayings of some of the county demo- cratic orators during the campaign was striking and pungent, eliciting hearty ap- plause. Leading members of the party from all parts of the county were sanguine that their efforts would lead to good re- sults on Tuesday next. The Vansville Farmers’ Club met last Saturday night at “The Pines,” the resi- dence of Mr. F. M. Magruder, near Sunny- side. Mr. J. D. Cassard presided, and Mr. D. M. Nesbit acted as secretary. The fol- lowing members were present: C. H. Stan- ley, S. W. Beall, Luther Brashears, Col. Davis, John Snowden, A. J. Bennett, Col. W. S. Powell, J. D. Cassard and D. M. Nesbit. The guests were W. B. Turpin, E. A. Fuller, Richard T. Willett, Michael Smith, Dr. McDonald of the Maryland Ag- ricultural College and Edward Magruder. The inspection committee, consisting of Messrs. Powell, Brashears and Snowden, after making an inspection of the host's farm, commended its general good appear- ance. The host read an essay on the regu- lar question, viz.: “The Storing and Care of Cabbage During the Winter.” He gave @ very practical and instructive view of the subject. The question was discussed at some length by the members of the club. A resolution was adopted, offered by Col. Powell, to the effect that the question of holding a farmers’ institute \during the winter be referred to a special committee, with instructions to investigate the feasi- bility of giving the same. The following committee was appointed by the chair to take the matter in hand: Col. W. S. Powell, S. W. Beall and John Snowden. Senator Gorman concluded iis campaign in the state Saturday night in Ellicott city, the county seat of his home county—How- ard—twelve miles above here. Mr. Bernard Carter of the Baltimore bar, and Mr. Isaac Lobe Straus, candidate for the legislature in Baltimore city. were the first speakers. The democrats of the sixth district of Howard county held a large and enthusias- tic meeting Saturday night at Savage, three miles above here. ‘The speakers at the meeting were John G. Rogers, candidate for re-election to the state senate; Martin F. Burke, candidate for state’s attorney; Peter J. Campbell of Baltimore, Edward Jones of Eikridge and Arthur P. Gorman, jr. This was young Gorman’s second ap- pearance on the stump during this cam- paign. As stated previously ‘n The Star, work on the Maryland and Columbia electric line will begin here today.
