It was the intention of the committee having the mc “ing in charge to have a torchlight pro- cess and hold the meeting in the large tent he corner of Washington avenue and Montzomery street. The inclement weather wi. -h rreva‘led prevented the car- rying out of program, and the meeting was held in the A my of Siesie instead. Another telegram was received from Sen- ater Gorman, which ran as follows: “It will be impossible for me to be with you tonight, owing to the condition of my throat. My physician forkids it. Tell our friends to he of good cheer, and victory will be ours." The Yield Even This Year Wil by No Mean: considerable. From the Savannah (Ga.) News. No reliable estimate cf the number of boxes of oranges Florida will produce this year is obtainable. It is certain, however, that the yield will be sufficiently large to surprise those who have had the impres- sion that all the orange groves of the state were destroyed by the freeze last winter. There are a great many groves on the west coast that were scarcely touched by the frost. They promise to yield well. Already a number of the own- ers of these groves have sold their crops on the trees for about double the amount per box they have received in previous years. In ocher parts of the state there will be a great many oranges—more than it was expected immediately after the freeze that there would be. Comparatively few of the groves have been abandoned. Most of the grove owners have gone to work irdbstriously to save the trees, and it is believed they are suc- ceeding better than they expected. Most of the groves that were killed beyond all hope of recovery were of young trees which had not yet come into bearing. Of the bearing groves, from three to five per cent have been abandoned. Those that are being cared for are making excellent progress, and will be bearing fruit within the next two or three years, if next winter should not be a hard one. We should not be at all surprised if within the next five or six years Florida’s orange crop would be fully as large as it was before the freeze. There does not apnear to be much foun- dation for the report that a great many families are leaving the orange-growing districts. It is true that here and there a family has gone, but there is not, ner has there been, any such emigration as the public has been led to believe there was by some of the statements that have been made in the public prints. It will not be long before the places of those who have sone elsewhere will be filled. In fact, they are beirg filled already, because faith in tke success of the orange industry has not been by any means destroyed. The freeze gave that industry a great setback. It did not destroy confidence in it. The time is not distant ‘when Florida’s orange yield will be far greater than it has ever yet been. Be ——_+e+_____ THE ELECTRIC LOCOMOTIVE. E momy in the Uxe of Gas Engines to Generate Power. From the New York Times. The question of the substitution of elec- tricity for steam on trunk railway lines has come to a head with a suddenness which astonishes even the most sanguine of its prophets. A meeting of railway off- clals has been held in Pittsburg to con- sider the introduction of electric motive power to supplant the steam locomotive on the Pennsylvania railroad system. A paper containing some remarkable data was placed before this meeting by one of the fgremost electrical authorities of the day. It was shown that, while the developments in electric railway apparatus, generators, motors, methods of distribution, &c., have been extraordinary, there is still one thing left to make the electric motor “a substi- tute in all particulars for the steam loco- motive.” This single but supreme factor in the future of electric railway work is the gas engine. It is known that a tocomotive con- stmes, on an average, eight times as much coal as would be quired to operate a properly constructed gas engine. The use of the gas engine to generate power for electric locomotives on railroads would thus effect an enormous economy. To carry out this plan, the electrie locomotive adopted would be entirely different from the present locometive. No electric loco- motive need have a greater weight and ca- pacity than may be required for the haul- age of twenty-five to thirty cars. It can be operated by one man. Instead of put- ting the whole motive foree in front of the train, and thereby subjecting the roadbed, bridg2s und cars to excessive weights and strains, it is probable that a second loco- motive will be placed In the center of long trains, subdividing the force applied for its Lropulsion and reducing io convenient lim- its the quantity of current required for the operation of the train. This subdivis- ion of the traction units will he, of course, merely a matter of convenience If it were needed, an electric locomotive could be made, even in the present state of the art, which would have a greater hauling ca- pacity than any steam “locomotive that has yet been produced, +e<-—_ AUCTION SALES OF REAL ESTATE, &c Y Thomas Dowling & Co.
