14 THE EVENING STAR, THURSDAY, OCTOBER 31, 1895-SIXTEEN PAGES. SUBURBAN NEWS BROOKLAND. A delegation of King David's Lodge, F. A. A. M., visited Takoma Lodge Tuesday, where they were cordially entertained. The Soldiers’ Home school has begun its special study of music, so also has the Brookland #chool. Mr, Tracy has been ap- pointed “over both schools. The Soldiers’ Home school Is still laboring under difficul- ties, and the citizens jn that vicinity hope it will not be long before the new school building will be comm@nced. Mr. Draper’s pupils, the third and fourth grades, are much inconvenienced by the small desks whichvhave to be used. As the building has only two rooms, these pupils are compelled to use the one which the first and second grades occupy in the morning. The desks in this room are very small for the ad- vanced pupils, and the teachers think that the matter can be partly remedied if sev- eral more large desks be substituted in place of the small ones. “As yet the special health teacher has not visited either the Brcokland or Soldiers’ Home school, but it will probably not be long before she will. Rev. Archdeacon Childs will fill the pulpit of the Church of Our Savior tomorrow evening. Brovkland Lodge, I. O. O. F., No. 25, will give its monthly smoker about the middle of November. All the members of associate lodges will be invited to attend. Miss Hattie Winans, who has been visit- ing Brookland during the fall months, will return to her home in Parkersburg, W. Va. During her stay Miss Winans has visited many friends in this vicinity. ‘The foundation of the addition to the school building {s progressing rapidly, and in a few days the brick work will be com- menced. The men have been particularly careful about digging near the main build- ing, so that part of the building will be in no danger at all. ——._- TAKOMA PARK. The weekly prayer meeting of the Meth- odist Society has been omitted during the two weeks of revival service in the Pres- byterian Church. . Miss Ollie Slater has determined to defer her anticipated visit to relatives in Ne- braska. Mr. Robert S. Brown is occupying his home on Chestnut avenue. Mr. and Mrs. R. Percy Brown have moved to the resi- dence of Mrs. Lawrence, on Holly avenue. Mr. Wm. Watkins, with his family, has leased the Garrett cottage, on Oak avenue, and took possession wiih his family today. Dr. Ellis B. Bliss and family will remove to their former home on Maple avenue to- morrow. Mrs. Robt. H. Collins returned Tuesday to her home from a visit with Mrs. J. Vance Lewis. Miss Mary Waters left yesterday for Brookeville for the purpose of attending the wedding of her cousin, Miss Riggs. Many Takoma residents, patrons of the electric road, have determined to use the railroad this winter unless a waiting room is provided by the former company. —_.~——— , HERNDON. ‘The Fortnightly Club has selected officers for the ensuing term, as follows: President, Mrs. Stephenson; vice president, Miss Lula Castleman} secretary, Miss Ethel Mankin; assistant secretary, Miss Maude Yount; treasurer, Miss Ellen Thornton; parlia- mentary leader, Mrs. Duffie. The welcome address of the hostess, Mrs, Stephenson, which was in verse, was hizhly enjoyed. Mr. J. W. Bowie has purchased a lot of Mrs. E. V. Oliver, on which he will erect a building for a store and dwelling. Clas. Jackson, who was indicted by the grand jury in August for firing a pistol in a crowd on July 4, 1801, and whose triul Was set for the October term, was admitted to bail, his mother and a young man by the name of Brown going on his bond. When the case was called Jackson did not appear, thereby forfeiting his bond. H. W. Blanchard and family have gone to Washington, where they will spend the winter. Miss Katie Groh has gone to spend the winter there. At the regular meeting of the “School of Finance” Tuesday evening Mr. C. D. Choate gave the address, considering the subject from a gold basis. HYATTSVILLE. ‘The Tuesday Club met last Tuesday even- ing at the residence of Mr. and Mrs. J. H. Ralston. Shakespeare's play “As You Like It” was the subject for the evening's dis- cussion. Quotations from the play were given by the different members of the club. The “Alpine Song” on the zephyr and violin Was rendered by Misses Alice and Eliza- beth Erwin. Mrs. J. H. It now looks as if the proposed electric railway between Washington and Laurel will take the route through this village, running parallel with the Baltimore and Ohio railroad, as the deed has been signed for the right of way through a certain piece of property along that route, and the money paid over to the owner. The first social meeting of the Hyatts- ville Assembly was held last evening at Ravenswood, the spacious residence of Mr. end Mrs. M. V. Tierne: Nearly all of the club members were present, and a most enjoyable meeting was the result of the efforts of the host and hostess. The floors were cleared early for dancing, and that enjoyment lasted until a late hour, being interspersed with music and social greet- ing: Mrs. Aman entertained the club with a vocal solo, while Miss Mary Scho- field charmed her hearers by her work on the plano. About 11 o'clock the guests ad- journed to the dinning room, where a tempting menu was served. A number of invited guests were present from Washing- ton, and the inaugural meeting of the as- sembly opened most auspiclously the fes- tivities of the coming season. Those who were present were the Misses Cecilia and Fannie Duffy, Nannie Gieb, Nellie Callahan, Blanche Van Dorn, Edythe Gailant, Leila Aman, Corinne MacF nd, Mary® Scho- field, Mrs. Duffy, Mrs. Jos. The Conversational Club met at the resi- dence of Miss Belle C. Merrifield Tuesday night, with a good attendance. The subject of the evening, “The New Woman,” was presented in a paper prepared by Miss Mer- field, in which she took strong grounds in favor of suffrage and equal pay for work done, but did not favor the general adop- tion of the radical change in dress. The paper was the cause of an animated discus- sion, participated in generally by those present, most of whom non-concurred in the sentiments expressed. Among those present were Mr. and Mrs. J. L.
