By diligent work the lumber yard of the company and Carlisle's livery stable, immediately adjoining, were saved by the volunteer fire company. Sparks from a Baltimore and Ohio lo- comotive set fire Sunday to the dried un- derbrush in the woods lying between Ken- sington ard Capitol View, belonging to Mr. August Burgdorf. Owing to the fierce winds the flames spread rapidly, and it was found necessary to ring an alarm on the church bells. A large crowd gathered, and after several hours of hard work the blaze was checked before reaching the houses lo- cated near the edges of the burnt district. An election of officers for the Christian Endeavor Society for the ensuing year will be held at the close of the regular Thurs- day evening prayer meeting at the Warner Memorial Presbyterian Church. The town council are engaged in an in- teresting correspondence with the Balti- more and Ohio Railroad Company in re- gard to a bridge burned within the cor- poration on October 3. Hallowell of Rockland deliv- ered a most interesting lecture upon as- tronomy one evening last week to some of his neighbors, who assembled in his parlor for the purpose, after which the whole company adjourned to the lawn and viewed the constellations, as pointed out by Mr. Hallowell, with whom the study of the heavens has always been a favorite pur- suit and recreation. Mr. and Mrs. Charles H. Brooke, Mrs. Catherine Janney and Mrs. George F. Nes- bitt started last Tuesday to drive to Fred- erick and Hagerstown. They were from home five days, and they returned enthu- siastic over the beauties of western Mary- land scenery in autumn dress. The following Friends are attending their yearly meeting in Baltimore: Samuel P. Thomas and wife, Sarah H. Stone, Marga- ret S. Hallowell and son, Hannah B. Sta- bler and daughter, Anna F. Hallowell, sons and granddaughter of Denver expect to be for several months with Mr. and Mrs. Edward N._Bentley. Prof. Arthur C. Bibbins of the Woman’s College and Mr. Spencer of Johns Hopkins, Baltimore, have been hunting geological specimens in this vicinity, and they se- cured photographs of various prehistoric stone inmplements and vessels, some of which were found in Sandy Spring many years since. They also took pictures of a soapstone pan, still fast to the rock from which it had never been detached, on the farm of Benjamin Thompson, and of an- other and much larger stone on that of John C. Bentley, which was apparently used in a former age to crush grain. Political meetings are the order of the day, or, rather, of the night, and one will shortly be held at Olney, which is to be addressed by Senator Faulkner of West Virginia. Laurel and Sandy Spring are at last con- nected satisfactorily by telephone. Se Stepped Into a Hole. Mr. Bernard McMahon, an inspector of gas meters, sustained a fractured knee cap while searching for a leaking gas pipe last evening in house 1437 Pennsylvania ave- nue northwest.
