Mr. and Mrs. John Riggs of Brookeville have issued cards of invitation to the mar- . riage of their daughter, Bettie, to Mr. Mar- shall P. Howard. The ceremony will occur ‘Wednesday, October 30, 430 p.m., in St. John's Chureb, Olney, Rev. Wm. H. Laird to officiate. : Lucy Dunley pleaded guilty before the mayor when arraigned by Bailiff James 'T. English on a charge of disturbing the peace, and paid one dollar fine and costs. A son of Mrs. John H. Clagett died Tues- - at home, in Clagettsville, of typho'd fever. Rev. J. K. White of Frederick has been visiting relatives in this vicinity. The Oley Democratic Club announces a rally, under-its auspices, at Grange Hall in that town Saturday night. Senator Charles J. Faulkner of West Virginia and Mr. Henry E. Davis of Washington are to do the speech-making. Mr. Washington Miller and party of friends are now in West Virginia on a hunt- ing expedition. Revs. L. L. Lloyd and Wm. C. Brian are both out of town this week engaged in re- vival efforts at points on their respective charges, the former at Travilah and the latter at Hunting Hill. ‘The funeral of Mr. Harry D. Cooke, who died on Wednesday, occurred this morning from the residence of Mr. Gilmore Duley. There was-a large attendance, and Rev. Mr. Lioyd officiated. Interment was made in the family burying ground near Redland. Mr. Cooke was a member of an influential family, highly esteemed and a leading far- mer and real estate owner. He was un- married, and Messrs. John Cooke of Texas and Nathan Cooke of this place, brothers, survive him. Miss Marian Wilson has returned to Wash- {ington from a visit to Miss Katie Monroe. —— HYATTSVILLE. A farmers’ institute will be held under the auspices of the grangers of Mont- gomery and Prince Gcorge’s counties at Barnesville ‘on the 31st instant at 1 o’clock. The following are the subjects for discus- sion: 1, “Shall We Have a State System of Farmers’ Institute?’ by Pesident R. W. Silvester of the Maryland Agricultural College; 2, “Does a Farmer's Success De- pend Upon Himself?” by Mr. John Miller of Chillum; 3, “The Principle in Preserving Fruit,” by Dr. Martin Scott of the Mary- land Agricultural College; 4, “Pig Feed- ing,” by Prof. Jas. S. Robinson of the Maryland experimental station. All farm- ers are Invited to attend and take part in the discussion. An important meeting of the Montgomery County Grance will be held at the same place on the same date in the forenoon. An enthusiastic meeting of the Bladens- burg Democratic Club was held last even- ing at Bladensburg, with J. F. Hickey in the chair. The club perfected arrange- ments for the mass meeting which will. be held in Bladensburg next Monday evening, and whl be addresesd by the candidates on the county ticket and other local speakers. Dr. Chas A. Wells was selected to preside over the mass meeting, and the following vice presidents and secretaries were chosen: Vice presidents—Jas. H. Ferrall, Thos. B. Lewis, Fred. MclIlhenney, jr., while driving in a ‘wagon through this village yesterday, with Tom Ladson, met with quite an accident. ‘The horse ran away and threw MclIlhenney on the ground, breaking his leg. Ladson Jumped out and escaped injury. ee LAUREL. ‘The work on the Main street improve- ment Is teing pushed rapidly, in order to get as much of it done as possible before col® weather reaches here. The employes on the work are working from 6:45 a.m. unt# 6 p.m. every day. It is believed that next week the men will work at night upon the improvement. Stone has been laid from 9th street to Church street, on Main, and _the brick sidewalk has been put down in a number 2f places. The rough grading has been completed to Avondalg street and the fine grading to Center street. The curb has been laid nearly the entire length of the street on both sides, it having reached Washington avenue, two squares above the eastern terminus of-the work. At the pres- ent rate of progress it is expected to have Main street, from its eastern terminus at the Baltimore and Ohio depot to its west- ern terminus at the Laurel cotton mill gate, macadamized, curbed and sidewalks paved with brick between the 15th and 20th of November. The Laurel foot ball eleven will play the Central H‘gh School eleven of Washington temorrow evening at 4 o'clock in Lau- rel Park. The funeral of Mrs. Grafton Bell, who died late Wednesday evening, at her home in High Ridge, Howard county, will take place today from her late residence. Mr. Barnes Compton-and family have re- turned from St. Mary's county, where they went to attend the funeral of Mrs. Comp- ton’s sister, Mrs. Curtis, wife of Dr. Lloyd Curtis, United States navy. Mr. and Mrs. Charles J. Zeigler have re- turned from an extended trip to the At- lanta exposition. Taey were accompanied by Mrs. Lloyd, Mrs. Zeigler’s mother. The condition of Miss Katie Browning, Pestmaster Flannery’s assistant, is much improved, ¢nd sanguine hopes of an early recovery are entertained for her. The game laws of Prince George’s coun- ty, which borders on the District of Colum- bia, permit hunting partridges and rebbits from November 1 to December 24; robbins, November 1 to April 1; woodcocks, Novem- ber 1 to December 24, and June 15 to Sep- tember 1. The license fee is fixed at $20. ‘The Howard county game laws permit thé hunting of pheasants from August 15 to December 24; partridges, October 31 to De- cember 24, with a license fee of $7.50. In Anne Arundel county, which borders on Laurel, partridges, rabbits, quails, pheas- ants and woodcock, can be hunted from November 10 to December 15; robbins, from February 1 to April 1. The non-resident license fee in this county is $6.50. Mr. George M. Bond, passenger agent at Washington of the Chesapeake and Ohio raflroad, and: his wife, who have been sum- mering her at their cottage in High Ridge, will remove shortly to Washington forethe winter. ——.__ KENSINGTON. Brinkerhoff is placing a fur- nace in his new house on Broad street. deere EX-CONSUL WALLER’S CASE. Documents That Mrs. Waller Will Present to the Department. Mrs. Waller has not yet had an interview with the Secretary of State, because of the absence of her papers. These arrived yes- terday, and she will go before the Secretary of State with them, in company with her attorney, Mr. Crammond Kennedy, as soon as he can classify the documents. ‘The presentation which she will make is intended to establish the presumption of in- nocence on the part of her husband. She will exhibit, among other documents, all the letters written to her by Mr. Waller after his arrival in Tamatave previous to those on the strength of which he was ar- rested, and these will show that Mr. Waller, instead of attempting to inform the Hovas of the movements of the French, through his correspondence with his wife, refrained from all reference to such questions, except to caution her against any act which could be construed as partial to the natives. An affidavit from the Hova lad for whom Mr. Waller was to purchase four pistols in Lon- don, to which reference was made in the sequestrated letters, will also be presented. The arrangement for this purchase, it is asserted, was made long before the trouble between the French and the Hovas aruse, and Mr. Waller was requested to procure these weapons for the lad, his father and two other relatives, simply because they could be procured more cheaply in England than in Madagascar. —_———_-e-—______ THE PRESIDENT RETURNS. The Distinguished Party Got Back From Atlanta Last Night. The special train over the Soutiiern rail- way which conveyed the President and the members of his cabinet to and from the Atlanta exposition reached the city about 8 o’clock last night. Very few persons were in the waiting room at the time, and there was no public demonstration. The President's party on the return trip was unchanged, except that Secretary Smith remained in Atlanta to make ar- rangements to bring his family to this city for the winter. The returning travelers are delighted with what they saw and heard, and express.their hearty appreciation of the excellent service of the Southern rail- way, over which the trip was made. The President and those accompanying him were particularly pleased with the ovations tendered by the people along the line of the railroad. —— SCIENTIFIC SHOP-LIFTING. Even the Baby Was Purloined From the Counter. From the Pall Mall Gazette. Outside of th2 big Paris stores there were lately grouped a lady, a nursemaid with a baby in her arms, and an inspector of po- lice in the execution of his duty. The lady had just been given into custody on a charge of unlawful sampling off the count- ers. She was protesting her innocence in the most eloquent and moving terms. The nursemaid was too far gone for words, but she sobbed in a highly effective man- ner upon the baby’s shoulder. The great heart of the people that stood round was stirred. It found voice, anon, in cries of a bas against that inspector. Abashed, in- deed, he might have been, had he not shrewdly and suddenly unwaterproofed his prisoner. For, underneath, she was all overnroof— fluttering with fans and fancy articles, fes- tooned with lace and ribbons and fallals of all sorts, hung round with natty boots and neat umbrellas. It was a sight to give the abasers pause. A certain revulsion of feel- ing in favor ot constituted authority began to set in. But when constituted authority proceeded to unclozk the nursemaid also, and she, in her agitation, let the baby fall, a roar of execration arose from the by- standers. For the baby fell upon its head and stove it in. The inspector had to go down upon his knees and pick up the frag- ments of that fractured skiull and show them around. Then there arose another sort of roar. Fragments of wax they were. The very baby was a shop-lift. CAT IN A CHURCH. It Proved, However, to Have a Telling Effect on the Congregation. From the Kansas City Times. Never was a church congregation so sum- marily dismissed and so wildly stampeded as that at the holy temple in the hazel brush at ‘the extreme limit of Atchison, where the colored brethren meet to wor- ship. Last night, just as the big, strong- lunged pastor had worked up the congre- gation to an exciting pitch by portraying the awful fate of those who should be weighed in the balances and found want- ing, there ran into the church through the open door a lIittle black and white cat, with a big, bushy tall, closely pursued by a big yellow dog. Cat and dog ran down the aisle to the platform on which the preacher was stand- ing. The cat was met by the toe of the preacher’s big boot, and, after a brief flight through the air, it landed over among the sisters. As it hit the floor something hap- pened. It was a polecat. Gives His Foot to a College. From the Chicago Times-Herald. A letter received by a student from Den- ver, Col, states that the late Robert.C. Greiner made a curious bequest to the University of Michigan. Greiner was a native of Jackson, Mich., and was killed two months ago in the boiler explosion at the Gumry Hotel. His wife died with him. The will was written by Greiner himself. But the last clause concerns the University of Michigan. It directs that after his death his right foot shall be amputated above the ankle and presented to the Ann Arbor Medical School. It is to be mounted as a skeleton preparation and labeled ‘Bob's Game Foot.” Mr. Greiner had a peculiarly formed an- kle and dislocated toe, which had been a great source of trouble to him, but such a puzzle to physicians that he came to take great pride in it. Hence his desire to per- petuate the abnormality. University au- thorities have heard nothing of the peculiar bequest, and It is not known whether he ever was treated here for any of the diffi- culties arising from his deformity. ———_+0-<—____ The Dog’s Worth Wanted. From the Philadelphia Record. Here is a problem from real life: A young Kensington housekeeper recently purchased a dog for $2.50. She took it out for a walk and lost it. She paid $1 reward for its re- turn when the dog was brought back last Saturday. On that day she bought a six- pound rib roast for Sunday’s dinner at twenty cents a pound. The dog ran off with tre rib roast, and added to his own weight nearly half the weight of the rib roast. The other half was unfit for use. Since then she has tried three times to lose the dog, but he always came back. Finally she paid a mar fifty cents to rid her of the hated dog’s presence. She never got the fifty cents back, but she did the dog. He strolled info the house yesterday. Now, how much was the dog worth, allowing $1.23 for wear and tear on the house- keeper's nerves? Departure of no Russian Fieet for Corea. _ The cable reports that a Russian fleet of fifteen vessels was on its way to Corea have attracted much ‘attention among the diplomatic representatives of the far east, to whom it was shown. It is regarded as presenting grave conditions, if the facts are as reported. The fact that Fusan Is one of the points toward which the Rus- sians are heading 1s pointed out as spe- cially significant. Fusan is at the south- easterly extremity of Corea, and is the point nearest to Japan, being only twelve hours’ sail from the Japanese mainland. Further north js Won-San, the strategic point in Corea which the Russians have long sought to secure. It is on Brough- ton’s bay, in the middle of the east coast of Corea. The rorth arm of the bay is krown as Port Lazareff, and here the Rus- sian fleet comes regularly for maneuvers. ‘The bay is the only useful harbor in the stretch of six hundred miles along the east coast of Corea. The harbor is perfectly sheltered and is open the year round. Leading authorities agree that it will ulti- mately .be the terminus of the Trans-Si- ber'an railway which Russia is building. For these reasons, the movement of the Russian fleet toward these points of strategic importance is watched with keen interest. * Count Ineuye, who was formerly Japan- ese minister to. Corea, has started again for Corea as the special ambassador. = Rudyard Kipling.
