Boswell, an aged and highly fespected cilizen of this section of the county, died yesterday at his home, near Hunting Hill, in his eighty-fourth year. During the late war and for a number of years since Mr. Boswell was a contractor for carrying the mails to several points in the county. He wis twice married, his second marriage occurring about one year ago. He leayes a widow and several chil- dren, some of whom reside in Washington. Miss Rebecca G. Burroughs, aged forty- seven years, died yesterday after a brief illness at the residence of her sister, Mrs. Geo. C. Trail, at this place. A grand republican rally will take place at this town Saturday, Noveraber 2, during the afternoon and evening. Prominent speakers will address the voters. ‘The officers of the Chesapeake and Po- tomac Telephone Company have made ap- plication to the mayor and council of Rock- ville for permission to erect poles and string wires from the southeastern limits of the town to the Montgomery Hotel. ‘his ar- Tangement wi 3 the town telephonic communication with Washington, some- thing that has been long needed. In the orphens' court yesterday letters of adminis'ration on the personal estate of Wm. H. Laney, deceased, were granted to Alice O. Stewart, the renunciation of Co- lumbia A. Laney, widow of deceased, hav ing been filed in court; bond, $1,000. Mor- decai Morgan, administrator of L. F. Morgan, deceased, and Alice O. Stewart, administretrix of Wm. H. Laney, passed first and final accounts of the personal estates of their respective decedents. Phi- lemon M. Smith, administrator of Philemon J. Smith, deceased, filed an additional bond of $1,500, which was approved by the court. P. M. Smith, executor of Eliza A. Smith, deceased, filed for record final releases of legatees under the will of deceased and of the distributees in his final account of per- sonal estate of his decedent. The severe drouth which has prevailed in this section for the past three months is kecoming a serious matter to all classes. A large number of the wells in this place are dry and people are put to much incon- venience in obtaining water. The recently seeded crops of wheat and rye show but little sign of sprouting and unless rain soon tomes these crops will prove a failure. KENSINGTON. Miss Nellie Connolly of Washington is the guest of Mrs. T. M. Holbruner. Mess W. T. Lawton, Robert Houghton and Miss Emma Plyer, all of Washington, have been the guests of Mrs. A. M. Plyer. Mrs. Laura Shannon and Masters Herbert and William Shannon of Washington have been visiting Mr. and Mrs. J. Preston Shannon. Lay, have returned to their home in Baltimore. Capt. Lay and family expect to close thelr house here and go to Baltimore the last of this month to spend the winter. Mrs. Henry Darling has returned from Berkeley Springs, where she fully regained her former health. Mr. W. F. Mattingly and family have moved into Mr. Calvin Witmer's house. Mr. and Mrs. John Kraft of Brie street, Brightwood Park, celebrated, Friday even- ing, their crystal wedding. - There were about a hundred guests present, and some costly and beautiful presents were brouzht by them. Dancing was indulged in until midnight. The dining room was nandsomely decorated, and a delicious supper served. Among those present were Capt. and Mrs. Landon, Adjt. and Mrs. Hoyberger, Capt. and Mrs. Columbus, Lieut. and Mrs. D. F. Brown, wife and daughter, Palmer and Skidmore, Mr. and Mrs. Coxen, Mr. and Mrs. Raissler. The Hamline prayer meeting was held at the residence of Mrs. Sands on Flint street Friday evening. Mr. Burke of Washington led upon the subject “Trusting in the Lord.” Among those present were Mrs. Thomas, Miss Thomas, Messrs. Dutton, Proctor, and Thomas Schneider, Misses Wil- let, Gill, Mrs. W. J. Cook, Mr. and Mrs. Sands, Misses MacElwee, Keene, V. Brown, Mrs. Middleton, Miss Jessie Brown. > GAITHERSHURG. Mr. James Reed is seriously ill with ty- pkoid fever. Mrs. R. H. Miles was summoned to her fermer home in Howard county, owing to the illness of her father. Mr. James K. Walker of this place has purchased the Hardesty farm at Travilah, containing 302 acres, at $8 per acre. Miss Minnie Case nas left for Washington to attend school. Rev. J. A. Taylor, junior pastor, is con- ducting a very successful revival at the Goshen M. E. Church South. Large con- gregations are in nightly attendance, and such an awakening has not occurred there for years. Republicans of Montgomery county are everywhere active, and from now until elec- ticn day mass meetings will be held daily, preminent speakers having been engaged for the purpose. Mr. James Connor, a respected citizen of Damascus, died at the home of Dr. B. F. Lassdale, aged eighty years. Typhoid fever terminated his life, and interment was made in Prospect cemetery. A charity concert by the ladies of the town has been announced for Friday at $ pm., in Norman Hall. The numbers and participants mentioned in the program from Washington, Rockville, Washington Grove znd home should bespeak a large patron- age. Mr. and Mrs. F. W. Carlyle are di- recting the arrangements now about com- pleted. Mr. Harry D. Cooke hag sold*the dwelling and building lot on the corner of Diamond and Frederick avenues to Mr. John McAtee, a contractor of Philadelphia. He will short- ly improve the lot by erecting a handsome residence thereon. The price Mr. Cooke re- ceived was $1,500. Mr. Frank Dwyer, formerly of the firm of Dwyer & Weeks, Laytonsville, has pur- chased the desirable corner lot opposite the store of Mr. Weeks, paying $N) therefor, and will immediately erect a store that will ecilpse any business house in that town. The nuptials of Mr. James W. Burdette and Miss Miranda E. Etchison were cele- brated at high noon Tuesday in the Damas- cus M. E. Church, Rey. D. Benton Win- stead officiating. ‘The church, according to the custom, was exquisitely decorated and brilliantly lighted. Messrs. George M. Boy- er and F. E. Burdette ushered the large audience to seats, and all available stand- ing room. The bride was attended by Miss Rese Purdum and the groom by Mr. J. Webb Mullinix. Mrs. J. L. Burdette played the wedding march. The newly married Mr. and Mrs. Jas. W. Burdette took an af- ternoon train from this place for a southern Lridal tour. a BROOKLAND. Brookland Lodge, I. O. O. F., No. £5, was visited Monday night by the grand officers of the order in the lodge room at the town hall. First there was a business meeting and general examination of Odd Fellowship work by the Grand Lodge, after which the doors were thrown open to invited guests. As a welcome to the Grand Lodge an interesting program had been arranged, Mr. Wm. Quinn acting as chairman. The recitations by Mr. Anton Sousa, Dr. T. J. Jones, Mr. Greer and Mr. Frazier were thoroughly enjoyed and heartily encored. Mr. Frazier sang a comical song and the lodge sang in earnest feeling three odes. There were speeches given by Grand Mas- ter Richard H. Sorrell, Grand Represen- tatives F. A. Stier and W. P. Allan, and Dr. Frank T. Howe, all of which were greatly appreciated. The evening closed with a supper, which was thoroughly en- joyed. Many people from Brookland and the city were present. Those of the Grand Lodge were Grand Master Richard H. Sor- rell, Deputy Grand Master T. J. Jones, Grand Warden J. I. Brown, Grand Secre- tary Wm. R. Hunt, Grand Treasurer J. A. B. Espey, Grand Representatives F. A. Stier and Wm. P. There is a petition in circulation, to which many citizens have placed their names, to have a shed put up on New York avenue and Boundary, where the change from the trolley to the horse cars takes place. Tiis is very necessary, for often the wait between the connection is long, and during that time passengers are com- pelled to stand in a very exposed place. —_ HYATTSVILLE, An interesting gospel meeting was held in the Presbyterian Church of this town Sun- day night, under the direction of the Ep- worth League of the Methodist Church South, and the Christian Endeavor Society, both of Hyattsville, Mrs. H. Markwood, dent of the league, and Mr. G. M. B. jaw, secretary of the C. E. Societ: being joint leaders of the meeting. It was pened by the C. E. Society, who sang jesus, Savior, Pilot Me,” at the ‘lose of which the members of the league marched into the church singing “Blest Be the Tie That Binds,” which was very impressive. Suitable remarks were made by members of the two organizations, and at the close cf the meeting resolutions looking to a con- tinuance of joint effort In the work of the societies were presented by Mr. Jackson and referred to the proper officers for further ac- tion.
