20 SUBURBAN NEWS ANACOSTIA, William Sutton, who was arrested some @ays ago on suspicion and subsequently released from the substation here for want of evidence, was again taken into custody on the original charge yesterday, and last evening was identified by Mrs. Roberts of ‘Washington as one of the parties who at- tacked her and her granddaughter and rob- bed the latter of a small sum of money near the District line between two and three weeks ago. ‘The Laurel Democratic Club will hold a public meeting at jts quarters in Conway's Hall tonight. Speeches will be made by Mr. Charles W. Darr of the Washington bar, some of the county candidates and others. Before the club meeting the committee on arrangements for the democratic meeting on the 31st will meet at Dr. T. M. Baldwin's office. The Relay Base Ball Club, who won the Journal intercounty pennant, will hold their musical entertainment and hop Monday night, the 2ist instant, at St. Denis, Md. A movement {s on foot in that section to establish there a club similar to the Eik Ridge Hunting Club and the Catonsville Country Club. It is doubtful whether a club house will be erected at present, but It is probable that plans will be perfected in the future with this end in view. Next year the efforts of the club, which will be called the Relay Country Club, will be devoted solely to the advancement of base ball and lawn tennis. Among the prime movers in this new enterprise are Dr. R. H. Dodge of the Conrad Sanitarium, who will, no doubt, be chosen president of the club. Among the others who are interested are; Dr. W. R. Hareckson, manager of the Relay Base Ball Club, and’ Messrs. Thomas and William West, Robert Dobbin, Lee Marshall, Joseph Hands and Robert Parker. The West End Democratic Club will hold @ meeting in their room in Shaffer's Hall next Monday night. Among the speakers who are expected to address the meeting is ex-Congressman William McKaig of west- ern Maryland. A musical and variety entertainment will be given about the first week in November at the Academy of Music here. Among the attractions expected are Messrs. Cullen and Collins, banjo performers; Mr. George O'Connor, in comic songs; Messrs. Barton Miller and Guy Collins, in recitations; Mr. J. J. Fisher and a number of Washington's leading singers. The ladies of the First Baptist Church will give a literary and musical entertain- ment at the church November 1. ——. —-— GAITHERSBURG. the the Tuesday evening the attendance at ‘Waverley Club was the largest since summer vacation. The committee of en- terteinment acquitted itself well in the preparation of the evening program, which was well pleasing to all. Together with the usual musical and literary numbers, Mr. Guy V. Collins of Washington recited, and Rev. L. L. Lloyd delivered an address on “Two Best Books.”’ He pointed out the respective merits of Webster’s Interna- tional Dictionary and Whittaker’s Al- marac, which led him to conclude that they were two of the best books of the day. Mr. R. Dorsey Trundle is to deliver the address of the evening at the next meeting. B Mr. George F. Heuter of Baltimore has been visiting friends here. Mr. Frank Ferguson and family have re- moved to Hagerstown, he having resign- ed his clerkship in Washington to embark in business in that city. Mra. Wm. Reed died at her home near this place Thursday night of typhoid fever. She leaves a family. The grand rally of the Cleveland and Hurst Club drew an audience that well filled the opera house Wednesday even- ing. Mr. W. H. Talbott presided and in- troduced Mr. Edward C. Peter as the first speaker. He was followed by Mr. Henry E. Davis of Washington and Mr. Alexan- der Kilgour, candidate for state's attor- ney. An organization has been formed to build a colored church and school in Kensing- ton Heights, and Mr. Alex. Deitcher and Mr. Edward Stuart have been appointed as a committee to select the site. ROCKVILLE. Mr. Patrick F. Muleahy and Miss Marga- ret M. Santman cf Washington county, Md., were married here on the 16th instant by Rev. S. R. White. At the opera house, this place, Saturday evening, 25th instant, a play entitled “Re- becea’s Triumph” will be presented by six- teen young ladies of the town. The per- formance will commence at 7:45 p.m. The proceeds will be devoted to a charitable purpose. During the past summer residents of this town and vicinity have been greatly an- noye:l by tramps, who generally locate near the railroad, where they appear to have es- tablished a regular camp, and from this ront they perambulate the town in search of food, clothing, &c. O’Connor, Guy V. Collins, Misses Fanny Y. At Lee and May Blossom, was attended by an appreciative audience, and gave general satisfaction. —— HYATTSVILLE. A public test exhibition of the Howe chemical and water fire engine was given last evening at 6:30 o’clock on the large vacant lot on Maryland avenue, opposite the residence of Dr. Richardson. In the early part of the evening a pair of horses were hitched to the engine, and it was driven through the town, the bell being Icudly rung, and Chief Marshal Wilson and his assistants occupying seats upon the engine. An old dilapidated shed upon the lot was saturated with coal oil and set on fire, making a blaze which seemed almost impossible to extinguish. The hose was brought to play upon the flaines, and the fire was subdued in a few minutes. Ten men worked the pumps of the engine,five on each side, and 150 feet of hose was used. A reighboring pump supplied the water. The entire town turned out to witness the ex- hibition. Representative men from Laurel and Kensington were also present. Mr. Howe entertained the members of the fire company and the visitors from Laurel and Kensiggton at supper last evening. A pretty three-act play was presented last evening at Grand Army Hall, by several young ladies of this village, for the benefit of the Pinkney Memorial Church. A large and appreciative audience filled the hall, and loudly applauded the performers at the strong points of their acting. The cast was as follows: Anita, an Italian girl,Miss Ethel Wilson; Kate Fortescue, a bride of three months,Mrs. Lewis Holden; Ethel Manning, ready for anything, Miss Louise Fuller; Nan Fortescue, a victim of the camera, Miss Florence Carr; Clover Wells, Aunt Matil- da’s right hand, Miss Lolo Tricou; Aunt Matilda, everybody's aunt, Mrs, Rexford M. Smith; Mrs. Deacon Pippin, with an eye to business, Mrs. Dr. Owens; Lurella Ann Pippin, with a taste for sensational litera- ture, Miss Mary Wells; Dorothy Pippin, just in her teens, Miss Margaret Carr, Mary Hyde and Helen Joy; “Our Athletes,” Misses Mary Dorsey and Charlotte Fenwic. Miss Ethel Wilson performed the part of Anita in-an admirable manner, speaking broken Italian to perfection, ' Mrs. Dr. Owens made a decided hit in her rendition of the character of Mrs. Deacon Pippin, while Miss Lolo Tricou, as Clover Wells, and Miss Mary Wells, as Lurella Ann Pip- pin, did remarkably good acting. During the intermission between the acts the Dixie Quartet, composed of Messrs. George Coy, J. P. Minetree, jr., F. H. Poston and J. S. Tyler, assisted by their manager, Robert Bruce, entertained the audience with comic songs, and were frequently encored. Re- freshments were served after the play. ——— BROOKLAND. Mrs. Moore, wife of Mr. Willis Moore, chief of the weather bureau, was the guest of Mrs. H. J. Penrod yesterday. The M. S. C. of Woodburn contemplate giving a dance next week in the town hall. The grand visitation to Brookland Lodge, I. 0. O. F., No. 25, will take place Monday evening at the town hall. This will be a kind of instruction in Odd Fellowship work, but, as the members here are well posted in this, Brookland will no doubt give a credit- able showing. Many guests from Washing- ton will be present on this occasion. The young people of Brookland will give a jolly straw ride the first part of next week. The quarterly love feast of the Methodist Episcopal Church will take place next Wed- nesday evening in the new church. On this occasion Rev. L. B. Wilson, presiding elder of the District, will preach the quarterly sermon. Mr. J..S. Barker, first vice president of the District League, will lead the Epworth League of the Brookland M. E. Church to- morrow evening. Mr. Yznaga has purchased lots on Lan- sing street, where he will shortly commence the erection of a handsome residence. The finance committee have reported that the Daughters of the Cross cleared between $50 and $60 at the carnival of the seasons and oyster supper given Thursday night. ee FALLS CHURCH. At the last meeting of the town council it was decided unanimously to secure a stone crusher, screen and roller for the use of the corporation, and the clerk was instructed to obtain bids from several companies for furnishing samé. The mat- ter of lighting the street lamps was re- ferred back to the proper committee to ad- vertise for new bids. The clerk was also directed to furnish each taxpayer with the amount of tax due for the fiscal year. The executive committee of the Village Improvement Society is arranging for a series of lectures at Odd Fellows’ Hall for the winter months. Rev. B. L. Whitman, D.D., president of Columbian Universit Prof. John Chichering, Rev. 8S. M. New- man, D. D.; Prof. H. L. Hazen and Dr. N. F. Graham have accepted invitations to deliver lectures. Mr. J. W. Taylor and family has moved into the house of Mr. W. H. Veitch, on Broad street. Miss Maud Jacobs, daughter of Mr. H. ©. Jacobs, died Wednesday night of con- sumption. She was just twenty-one years of age. At the meeting of Falls Church Li dge, No. 11, of Odd Fellows, last night, en- grossed copy of resolutions were presented Mr. W. H. Veitch, vice grand, on the death of his wife. Mr. M. 2. Church has sold for Mr. S. A. Birch his house and four acres of land to Mr. Geo. M. Newell of the Treasury De- partment. Mr. H. R. Center is now re- siding on the property. Prof. Robert Nourse has returned from a lecturing tour in Pennsylvania. —_—__. ‘WHEATO} Two political meetings were held in this precinct Wednesday evening, one by repub- licans, at the Sligo Church, which was pre- sided over by Mr. Philip Eaglin, when Messrs. J. Vance Lewis, candidate for the state legislature; Thos. C. Noyes, chair- man of the republican county committee; Ashley M. Gould, Julian Dowell and George Page made encouraging remarks; the other by democrats, at Thompson’s store, with William H. Mannakee in the chair. Thirty- four members were added to the rolls of the club, after which speeches were made by ex-Mayor of Kersington Thos. R. Mar- tin, Maurice Clagett and other brilliant orators. These meetings of citizens of this section of Montgomery county, which take place almost nightly, are being conducted in a friendly spirit, and the remarks of the candidates and their friends are listened to attentively by all, seemingly with the de- sire to be enlightened upon the political situetion in general before casting the final vote on November 5.
