ILK, WATER AND FEVER The Chairman of the Medical Society Com- mitteo Talks of Typhoid. Sracing Cases to Pumps and to Milk- mn—Reports Sent from Wash- ington Much Exaggerated. “Have you been reading the newspapers from other cities recently?” queried Dr. G. L. Magruder of a Star reporter last night. Dr. Magruder was chairman of the gommittee of the Medical Saclety of the District whose investigation and report on typhoid fever a few months ago attracted Bo much attention. « “It is simply out- rageous,” continued Dr. Magruder, “the ‘way in which Washington Is being repre- fented as suffering from an epidemic of typhoid fever. A friend of mine from Charleston, who is visiting here, received a letter from home this morning, full of an- xlety and begging her to be careful, be- pause the News and Courier had contained buch dreadful accounts of the ravages of typhoid fever in the city, stating that it was no respecter of persons, but had en- tered the houses of the rich and poor alike. The physicians of Washington owe it to themselves and to the community's good fo'report at once to the health department ‘very case of typhoid fever they have had under their charge sinca August 1, and those who have had no such cases should 2 nl that fact also. Such a course would iow that no such conditions exist as are represented. The health department has issued cards for this purpose, indicating the character of the information needed. These cards request the name of the Patient, when stricken with the disease, Whether a user of Potomac or pump water, and, if of the fatter, the location of the pump, and the name of the milkman or dairy supplying the patient with milk, and, if the patient has been absent from the city, where such absence was spent.” The Contamination of Milk. “I suppose milk is contaminated by ~ea- fon of the cows drinking water containing germs?” ventured The Star man. “You are entirely mistaken in that idea,” waid Dr. Magruder. “It is impossible for the milk of a cow to become contaminated in that manner. The animals, in wading through the clogged streams that abound in the vicinity of Washington, get the bac- teria on their udders, and in milking them ‘without first carefully cleansing the udder the germs get transferred to the milk. Then, again, the use of contaminated ‘water for washing the milk cans and dairy utens‘ls endangers the healthful qualities of the milk. There were several cases of typhold fever on Vermont avenue last fall, right by my office, and they were all traced to the milk supplied by the same milkman. Bo, from this you will see the force of the health department's request for full in- formation from physicians. If patients --se pump water and take milk let them ascer- tain the location of the pump and the name of the milkman. Dr. Boker, who is pur- suing the investigations into the causes of typhoid fever und tracing the cases re- ported and the causes for the health de- partment, is eminent in his line. His Papers on the subject of bacteria and ep!- demiology are known everywhere. Several years ago, when I was attending the inter- mational medical congress in Berlin, I was walking down Unter der Linden in front of tho University of Berlin with Dr. Boker, when we met Dr. Billings and the emi- nént Prof. Rauscher, who was president of the section devoted to epidemiology in the congress. Upon being introduced and hear- ‘ng Dr. Boker’s name, Prof. Rauscher at once expressed his gratification, and .in- vited him to be a vice president of the sec- tion. So, you see, his reputation had pre- ceded him to Europe.” Dangerous Pumps. “You seem to dwell particularly on pump Qwater and milk. Can you indicate the lo- tation of any pump in the city whose water has absolutely caused typhoid fever?” inquired the reporter. “Quite readily,” responded Dr. Magruder, Promptly. “There is a pump at the corner of Ist end K streets northeast. I saw an analysis of its water this morning, and it ‘was rank with sewerage bacteria. I have had three cases in my own practice which we®e directly caused by using the water from tnat pump, and in the past eight or ten years I am sure at least as many deaths have been caused by it. I have no doubt that many pumps in the city are @qually as dangerous, but all should be €losed at once, and peremptorily. About the inspection of milk, Dr. Woodward has in inefficient force at his command, and boratory facilities unequal to the neces- sities. He should be supplied with both. All arourd Washington there are clogged <a sluggish surface streams, full of refuse Sewerage, «nd cows are pastured alon; their banks. Their milk is brought into Washington and sold indiscriminately. It JWould be wise for citizens before patroniz- ing a dairy or a milkman to ascertain ‘where the milk comes from and whether the cows are kept properly, and the milk treated right, and'‘cleanliness = ercised around the dairy. pep eis May Be Prevented. “I have gone into these matters with svch detail,” continued Dr. Magruder, “not because I am alarmed at the exaggerated Stories of the prevalence of typhoid fever, but because it will be possible to stamp out the opportunity now existing for the disease to recur each autumn, as it has been doing, by exercising modern methods, The Commissioners are alert and anxious $o do everything in their power to accom- Flish this, and physicians and citizens should give them warm and vigorous as- sistance. The water used in the city should be filtered if it cost a million dollars for a plant to accomplish it. But first and fore- jost the pumps should be every one closed, and the inspection of milk made More rigid and more general. I hope The Star will impress on all physicians the ne- cessity of their reporting to the health de- partment the number of cases of typhoid fever they have treated and~whether they have had any or not. There should be more care exercised, too, in the diagnosis of the disease. Many cases of plain ma- larial fever are diagnosed as typho-ma- larial. There is no such thing as typho- Malarial fever. f the physicians will meet the health department's wishes, we will quickly learn the facts about the fever; that it is not epidem'c and that what exists Is directly traceable to causes which may be ascer- tained with little trouble.” ———__ The Political Situation in Utah, The Utah democratic territorial commit- tee met at Salt Lake yesterday. A vote was taken and unanimously decided to is- sue a call to reconvene the territorial con- vention. Tne cal? is, in part, as follows “Efforts are being made to cause the peo- Ple to believe that the dominant church of Utah desires the defeat of the democratic ticket. The democratic party has no quar- rel with any church in Utah. Its griev- ences have been caused by those who ure willing to drag the cross of Christ in the mud and filth of politics to advance selfish ends; therefore, In order that there may be issued a declaration of political and ze- ligious independence, the democratic state committee hereby d:rects the reassembling of the delegates that composed the origi- nal convention at Salt Lake on Tuesday, the 22d day of October, 1805. Re A Vanderbilt Reconciliation. ‘A press dispatch from Brooklyn says: It has become an accepted rumor among the members of the four hundred of New York, and particularly among those who gompose the Meadow Brook Hunt Club of Long Island, that a reconciliation is prob- ble between Mr. and Mrs. William K. Vanderbilt and that immediately follow- ing the marriage of their daughter Con- suelo with the Duke of Marlborough a focond ceremony will unite the parents a fiecond time in matrimony. ——__- + —___ Contract for Torpedo Boats. STAR, TUESDAY, OCTOBER 15, 1895-TWELVE PAGES. . THE REVIVALISTS. Meetings at Hamline Conducted by Messrs. Potter and Miller. Hamline M. E. Church, Rev. Dr. H. 8. Todd, Pastor, was sgain well filled last night with pecple assembled to listen to the Preaching of Mr. Potter, the evangelist, and the singing of Mr. Miller. The usual half-hcur sorg service preced- ing the sermon was conducted by Mr. Mil- ler. When the first hymn wes announced there were but few persons in the choir gallery, and Mr. Miller extended a general invitation to every one in the audience who could sing to come forward and take seats in the organ loft. Many complied. At the conclusion of the singing of one of the hymns in the song service Mr. Potter arose and asked if any present had rela- tives or friends they desired prayers for. Probably as many as one hundred per- sons in various parts of the church rose an@ briefly asked prayers for a brother, father, sister, wife, etc., as the case might be. Mr. Miller, by request of Mr. Potter, sang a solo, “What Will You Do?” In conclud- ing the song Mr. Miller sang with consid- erable energy and some one laughed. No- tleing this, Mr. Miller said in a most em- phatic manner: “I think it a shame for any man to laugh at another because he gets enthusiastic on the subject of religion, and if I kad the power I would make the earth vibrate $0 that it would shake him off. I want to live right, and then I'll risk the dying right.” Mr. Miller was proceeding to speak further on the subject of enthusiasm when Mr. Potter said: “Brother Miller of- ten gets happy. and sometimes he jumps as high a3 this desk Mry Potter's text was “Quench not the Spirit.” His principal illustration of. the subject was, he sald, given him by a friend while the two were riding in a Pullman from Cincinnati to Chicago. Said the friend: “Some time ago I purchased a mag- nificent cathedral clock. Its tones were so sweet that for a while our friends and neighbors would come in and listen to It. But after awhile, though it gave out its music just as sweetly as at first, cven my wife and myself, though seated in the same room with the clock, did not iear it unless we watched for its striking.” This, Mr. Potter said, was the way with the Spirit. It would warn those disposed to sin, but if no attention were paid to its warnings the conscience would becorhe dulled to its en- treaties and after awhile its voice would not be heard at all. Mf. Potter at the close of his address made his usual appeal to the penitent to come forward, and many did so. Mr. Potter and Dr. Todd also went among the audience and by personal appeals in- duced many others to request that they be prayed for, ——__ NATIONAL PURITY CONGRESS, Opening of a Notable Convention in Baltimore. Over two hundred workers in the great cause of moral and physical purity as- sembled last night in Baltimore at the opening session of the national purity con- gress, held under the auspices of the Amer- fean Purity Alliance. It was a gathering ef well-known men and women, and the keynote of the purpose of the assemblage was sounded when President ron M. Powell of New York opened the meeting with these words ‘The objects of this congress are to discuss means for the re- pression of vice, the prevention of its regu- lation by the state, the better protection of the young, the rescue of the fallen, the ex- tension of the White Cross among men, and to maintain the law of purity as equal- ly binding upon men and women.” It is the first congress of the kind held in this country, and the delegates present represent organizations whose purposes are kindred to the objects of the American Purity Alliance. They come from every section of the country, and many of them are known throughout the land for their activity evidenced in writings, speeches and personal labors in the cause they represent. One purpose of the congress, and its most important feature, perhaps, is to have their workers devise some scheme of co-operate labors based on the most successful plans which have been adopted for the better prosecution of the work. % ————_+e+_____ The Evening Star for the full time the mystery story, “When the War Was Over,” is running, including back numbers, will te sent, postpaid, to out-of-town subscribers ped = cents.
