Lively Contest for the Legislaturee Other Local Notes of General Especial Interest. The ¢ity democratic committee met last Eight and decided to hold the convention for the nominating of a candidate for the house of delegates Saturday next, October 22, in Seyepta Hall, at 12:30 o'clock. All the members of the committee were pres- ent except Mr. Wilkins, as were also the four candidates. Mr. J. T. Sweeney~ pre- sided, and stated that the object of the meeting was to decide how the vote was to be cast in the corvention and where the convertion was to be held. After a good Geal of discussion it was decided that the ¢elegates would vote the numerical strength of esch candidate, which gives Mr. Bailey 292 votes, Mr. Bendheim 630 votes, Mr. May 481 votes and Mr. Lipscomb 229 votes, This gives no one the 1,160 votes necessary for @ choice in the convention, and unless a combination is made the nomination will have to go to a dark horse, and speculation is now rife as to who that man may be. Police Commissioners. At the regular meeting of the police com- missioners last night Mr. Samuel Tiur was elected to fill the vacancy caused by the resignation of Policeman James Griffin, Mr. Tiur was a member of the old force, and was recently rejected by the board. His past record as a policeman has always been considered good. Some other routine business was transacted. Police Court. Mayor Thompson this morning disposed of the following cases: James Dougherty, cbharg2d with an assault on Henry Arnold, dismissed for went of evidence; Lena Bol- den, colored, charged with disorderly con- duct at the local depot, was fincd 9.00; Jacob Jones, colored, charged with theft, dismissed, the charge not being sustained. A Long-Distance Concert. The ladies of the Alexandria Telephone Exchange last night were highly entertain- ed by a concert over the telephone wircs, tendered them by the Harmony Club of Fredericksburg. The club was in the telc- Phone exchange in Fredericksburg, and played a number of selections and cvery note of the music was distinctly heard. The concert was a success in every par- ticular ané the ladies were greatly pleased. Notes. Peter Magruder, a well-known old col- ored man, died at his home on Gibbons street near Washington street yesterday. In the corporation court yesterday Mes- srs. J. J. Jamerson, A. H. Thompson, M. B. Harlow were appointed: appraisers of the estate of the late Lewis McKenzie. Mr. Alfred Robey yesterday caught @ shad in his trap net at the mouth of Hunt- ing creek. Mr. Lewis Kemper has been appointed as an assistait to City Engineer Dunn, to fill the place of Mr. W. B. Dobie. Nothing but routine business was trans- acted yesterday at the meeting of the Daughters of the Confederacy. Romeo Essex, the colored boy who was shot some time ago by his brother, is im- proving slowly. Mr. Edward J. Burke, son of Mr. J. W. Burke of this city, has been appointed acting electrical superintendent of the Brooklyn, Queen's County and Suburban railway. Misses Susie and Cora Webster held a reception at their home on Wilkes street last night. The residence of Capt. Knitz, just oppo- site the city, on the Maryland shore, burn- ed_to the ground yesterday. Frank Jefferson, while at work in the round house of the Southern railroad yes- terday, mashed his thumb off by getting it caught in a spring. Dr. O'Brien dressed the injured hand. SS TAMMANY’S TICKET. A Platform Opposed to “Rooseveltinm” Adopted. - The New York democratic county con. vention met last night at Tammany Hall and nominated the following ticket: For justices of the supreme court—Chas. H. Truax, Frederick Smyth and Chas. Mac- Lean. For judges of the court of general ses- sions—Joseph E. Newburger and Gen. Mar- tin T. McMahon. For justices of the city court—Robert A. Vanwick, John P. Suchman and Edward F. Dwyer. For county clerk—Henry D. Purroy. For register—William Sohmer. William Sulzer was named as temporary chairman, and made a brief speech, in which he advocated a Liberal platform—“a platform,” as he put it, “without race, without creed, without bigotry, without Puritanism and without Rooseveltism, either.” The executive committee of the United Societies for Liberal Sunday Laws was called to meet in the afternoon at the As- tor House to consider a proposition sup- mitted to them by Tammany. The prop- osition, which wes submitted last night and was conditionally accepted by the ex- ecutive committee, was that the Liberal Sunday Laws Societies should have the privilege of drafting the platform on the excise question which Tammany Hall would accept. The united societies would aiso have the privilege of naming the can- didates for assembly in four districts, The committee decided to support Tam- many, provided their conditions were ac- cepted by that organization. They further decided to present for Tammany’s consid- eration candidates for assembly nomina- tions. ——___-+ e+ —___ Sending Naval Constructors to Sen. The first step toward the carrying ovt of the policy adopted by Secretary Herbert of detafling the younger officers of the con- struction corps to duty at sea in order that they may familiarize themselves with the behavior of their constructions in practical service, was taken yesterday when an or- der was issued detaching Assistant Naval Constructor L. Bankson from duty in the Norfolk navy yard and assigning him to service with the North Atlantic squadron. Mr. Bankson will be placed on one of the ships to be designated by Admiral Bunce, probably his flagship, the New York, and afterward he will take turns with the va- rious ships of the squadron, making care- ful examinations as to their stability, their rolling, steering and scaworthiness, and embodying the results in special reports to be transmitted through Admiral Bunce to the Navy Department.
