DURRANT’S LAST FIGHT. The Close of the Attempts to Break Down the Prosecution is Coming. On the opening of the eleventh week of the Durrant murder trial in San Francisco today the defense will make a finai strug- gle to break down the testimony of the prosecution—a process which is expected to last three days longer. A few more stu- dents wil! be called to the stand, several additional citizens will testify to Durrant’s excellent reputation, and then the defend- ant himself will be called to the witness stand. It is the intention of the defense to have Durrant recount the history of his ad- ventures on April 3, from the time he ac- companied Blanche Lamont to school until the bour when he retired to rest in his father’s house. It is understood that the defendant's testimony will be guardedly given for the purpose of shutting off cross- examination. Under the law of the state a witness cannot be cross-examined except upon actual matters brought out upon direct examination. Thursday Attorney Duprey will close the ease for the defense. Friday and Monday will be occupied by District Attorney Barnes in rebu:tal. Tuesday will be passed in further rebuttal. On Wednesday the opening argument of the prosecution will be made, and Thursday, Friday and Mon- day the closing efforts of the defense will be made. The next day the district attor- ney will close for the prosecution. It is confidently expected that Judge Murphy will charge the jury ngt later than the morning of Wednesday, October 23: —____+e+—_____ FATAL COLLIERY EXPLOSION. Many Miners Shut in by a Wall of - Fire. An explosion occurred in the Dorrance colliery of the Lehigh Valley Coal Com- pany at Wilkesbarre, Pa., yesterday after- noon, by which three prominent mining en- gineers and the fire boss were shut in by a wall of fire, and from fifteen to twenty miners and laborers also. Two surveyors were fatally burned and four miners seri- ously. The men known to be yet in the mine late last night were: William Jones, aged twenty-eight, chief of engineer corps of the Lehigh Valley Coal Company; Wm. Cahill, aged twenty-six, engineer; Liewel- lyn Owens, twenty-seven, engineer; Thos. Samuels, inside foreman; Daniel Davis, fre boss. ‘The men who were brought out and are now at the hospital are: Robert Miller, sur- veyor, aged twenty-four, fatally burned; Robert Blanchard, surveyor, fatally burned; George Laphey, miner, burned on hands, face and breast, seriously; Joseph Murphy, laborer, seriously burned on face and head; Michael Morris, seriously burned about body; William Dunn, burned on face and hands. From fifteen to twenty miners and labor- ers were missing last night, and it was feared they were in the mine dead, as, had they escaped the flames and explosion, they would have reached the surface through one of the numerous openings. ——_ +e2___ Georgin Central Sold.
