Maul. Mercer officiated in the position of chairman of the pitching committee for the Senators, while Cun- ningham made up the other half for the Colonels. Some delay was caused by the absence of an umpire, and until one could be sum- moned two players were chosen to fill the bill. Meakin was chosen to represent Louis- ville aud Anderson was delegated to fill the bill for Washingtun. Before they could perform, however, Charley jer was called for, and he came out under instruc- tions from Mr. Young to umpire the game straight through. Notes of the Game. The game was well played throughout, end brilliant catches in the outfield were the order of the day. Mr. Snyder umpired a fair game, and his decisions were generally received without the new outfielder, was expected to play in the morning game, but his trata did not get in in time. He will probably take a place in the senatorial ranks this afternoon. Brown led at the bat for the Senators, while Cunningham and Holmes topped the Colonels’ list with three hits apiece. The little pitcher's hits, however, came in at the nick of time, and he was the principal other well-known long-distance rider and present holder of the 100 and 200-mile road records, H. P. Searle, who left at 4:30 o'clock in an attempt to lower Wolfe’s rec- ord for that distance. What adds interest to Wolfe's undertak- ing is the fact that his contemplated jour- ney had been kept a profound secret until the very last moment, and even then very few other than certain newspaper people were made aware of the undertaking. Searle especially has been kept in total ignorance of the fact of Wolfe’s starting and will only be made aware of it when he reaches a telegraph station somewhere on the road, where the information of his competitor's start has preceded him. is the fact that there is to be a two-gun start, as there was in the trial races. This will give both skippers two minutes in which to cross the Jine. Betting on the Race. Betting on the coming international yacht race is much brisker than it was a week ago. Then Valkyrie stock was high. She had just arrived, and those who had seen her in the dry dock spread the report that she was a dangerous boat. Since Defender, by her last two races, has again proved that she is a very fast boat, the betting is more in her favor. A Wall street broker is responsible for the story that Fred W.
