Notwithstanding the hgavy rain in the early evening and the continued threaten- ing weather, a delightful company assem- bled at “Idlewild,” the home of Col. R. P. Buckner and Mrs. Buckner, Saturday evéning-last, the occasion being a pro- gressive euchr2 party. Those partic- ipating were the Misses Loule Stet- son, Mattie Tyler, Lilly Irene Christ- man, Alice Mayfield, Alice Helston, Mr. and Mrs. Mayfield, Mr.-and Mrs. Charley T. Hendler, Messrs. Theodore Tyler, Charlie Stetson, E. G. Thompson and W. R. Harri- son. The parlor was handsomely decorated with wild and cut’ flowers, and the spa- cious veranda brilliantly {Muminated. The prizes were won by Miss Tyler and Mr. Stetson. The lady's prize was a handsome silver button hook, the gentleman's a scarf pin. Refreshments were served by Mrs. Buckner. At a meeting of the board of school trus- tees Tuesday Miss Mamie E. Castleman was unanimously elected as principal of the graded school for the eight months’ session of the school, which will be opened the first Monday in September. This selec- tion will undoubtedly give general satisfac- tion to the patrons, as Miss Castleman has had much experience as a teacher. With her as principal the schoo! is organized for the term, as Miss Fanny Bugg had al- ready been selected as first assistant and Miss Virgie Bugg as second assistant. Rev. John McGill will succeed Rev. R. A. Castleman as rector of the Eplscopal Church here. Mr. McGill is well and fa- vorably known as the former rector of the Episcopal Church at Fairfax Court House. Mr. J. D. Payne, district chief templar, delivered a temperance address for Clifton Lodge of Good Templars Friday and at- tended the picnic given by the lodge on that day. A spirited contest between two sides In a game of croquet has been waging for the past three evenings, one side headed by Mr. H. R. Center, who was assisted by Misses Stella, Minnie and Eva Birch and Mrs. H. R. Center, and the other headed by Mr. Edward Crittenden, assisted by Misses Mary and Susie Crossman, Ida J. Quick and Bertie Ossire. The decisive game was played Monday night, and resulted in a victory for the Crittenden side. The for- feit was an ice cream supper by the losing side. —_>__. HERNDON. Mr. Martin Rausch has sold the property he purchas::d a few months since from Mr. Ben Middleton, on the corner of Spring and Elden streets, to George A. Williams. Mr. Raysch goes to Alexandria, where he pro- poses to open in meats and provisions. Mr. George Meyers is remodeling and en- larging his house, which will he, when com- picted, one of the finest in the vicinity. He has also built a fine large barn and fs add- ing other improvements, which will make his one of the most complete and pleasant homesteads in this part of the country. Rey. R. A. Castleman preached his fare- well sevmon last Sabbath evening to a crowded house. The service was read by Mr. Cox, from William and Mary’s College. and the closing prayer was by Dr. J. K- Mason of the Congregational Church. Mr. Castleman will be gzveatly missed by his people here, who are strongly attached to him. He leaves this weck for Bel Air, ‘M4., and will begin his work ith the church there next Sabbath. Mr. Cox w occupy ths pulpit here during the month of August. The church has extended a call to Rev. Frank Stringfellow of Arring- ton, V: Filbert Leonhardt, son of Jacob Laon- hardt. formerly of this place, now liv: in Seattle, Wash., arrived from that place a few days since. Mrs. J. M. Beavers and Mrs. H. L. Bruce, from Washingtcn, are with Mrs. C. Z. Landreau. ‘The meeting which was called for last Saturday evening “to organize a school for the study of finance” was, on account of the rainy condition of the weather, post- poned to Tuesday, the Gth of August. SS BROOKL. D. Mrs. Jchn T. Hare, with her two young- est sons, is visiting In Virginia The Commissioners purchased last week the grounds to be used as the site for the rew school house at Stott’s station, and it is expected that work will soon be com- menced on the building, although it will not be completed until some time during the winter. This is to be a five-room build- ing to replace the school house adjoining the Soldiers’ Home. Miss Henrietia BE. King has been reappointed principal of the Soldiers’ Home School, but it is not yet known who will succeed Miss Helen I. Walsh, who has been transferred to the Mt. Pleasant School. The citizens hope to secure three teachers this fall, as -he at- tendance has increased so much that two cunnet do justice to the large number of children. Last year there were more chil- dren than could be accommodated with seats. At the meeting of the Brookland Lodge, I. 0. O. F., No. 25, Mr. C. H. Etz was elect~ ed representative to the Grand Ledge ‘The citizens have appreciated the way in which the Cemmissioners graded 12th street. It is quite an improvement to Brookland and is greatly used by the pec- ple. As this is to be a public thorough- fare the citizens think one thing more should be attended to. That part of 12th street which is in Brookland is without trees, which are very desirable, both for shade and for beautifying the street. ‘They hope also that attention will also be paid to other streets, especially the eastern part of Fort street, made utterly us: by the grading of 12th street, at the junction of which it rises about ten feet above the sidewalk. Many of the board walks in Brookland are badly in need of repairs, which the citizens hope will soon be at- tended to. % Mrs. G Me Louls and Miss Grace Lewis of Eckington are in New Hampsnire, where they will spend the summer. Mrs. Sherman Platt and M have been in Brookland since June, have gone to Harper's Verry to spead the re- mainder of the summer. 5 Miss Jeannie Dalgleish has returned from lower Maryland and is now with the family of Mr. John Small, sr., on the Brentwood road.
