A well-dressed woman applied at the Cin- cinnati Hospitaf for admission Saturday afternoon. She presented a letter from the mother superior of the convent, which said the bearer, Miss Nellie Thomas, had been employed at the convent some time and was suffering fram swollen feet. Noth- ing except the symptoms referred to in the letter was found on the preliminary ex- nation, but later it was decided to nce the foot, when it was found the limbs and feet were full. of pins and nesdles. Forty-one neesies were eéxtricated from her body And she was not able until yester- day to endure further operations, when ten more were extracted, and it is thought others will be found.’ The physicians fear blood poisoninz will set in, and that tne case in any event may prove hopeiess. The girl protested] till after the operations that she could nox tell how her feet and limbs became imbedded with these needles, finally she said she was an orphan at she had teen at the Convent of the Good Shepher? for several years. Dur- ing ler stay there she had done wrong. he had done that which she knew was not ht, and for every sin she had commit- ted she had done penance by thrusting a peedle Into ong af her legs. She explain- ed that each cperation had caused her agonizing pain, and that at times it was almost unbearable, but she felt that she must bear the pain as a recompense for the sin committed. This mode of doing nce, she said, had covered more than o years. Her wrongdoings had been of t occurrence, and she was unable imate the number of needles she had placed in her limbs. iS Superior Mary Malone stated that the outcome of the examimation of Miss Thomas was a revelation to her. She had been aware of the condition of the patien: legs and feet for several months, but had no idea of the cause. Yesterday Miss Thomas’ limbs were so swollen and her condition so serious that the mother super- for insisted upon her going to the hospital. Miss Thomas is able to talk, but is very weak and suffering intense pain. “Hermit” Hynmw’ Sudden Death. Solomon Y. Hyams, the “hermit” of the Gilsey House, wes privately buried in Woodlawn cemetery Saturday. Mr. Hyams had been, during the latter years of his life, a geat sufferer from rheumatism. To gain relief he went to Hot Springs, Va. about two weeks ago, where his death oc- curred very suddenly. “Sol” Hyams, as he was called, was born in Florida about fifty years ago. Early in life he went to New York to seek his for- tune. His tastes led him into Wall street, where he became a prominent operator. He retired from business about twenty years ago with a comfortable fortune, and took up his abode at the Gilsey House. Hyams wes a bachelor, and a reclus' bachelor at that. For eighteen years, it i said, he never left the Gilsey House, winter or summer, if two trips to the Hot Springs be excepted. The sorrow of his Ife was the disgrace brought upon an old and honorable family by his two nephews, Harry P. and Dallas . Hyams, whose trial for murder in Tor- onto is still fresh in the public mind. These two men were charged with having mur- dered “Willie” Wells of Toronto in order te get an insurance of $30,000 on the latter's life. The trial resulted in a disagreement, the jury standing ten to two for acquittal, —__— oe Shakers Going South. From the Buffalo Express. The Shakers of Mount Lebanon, N. Y., who have for an age been a part of the picturesque rural life of New York state, are soon to abandon their historical town and remove to pastures new. The Shaker Society of Mount Lebanon has bought, through a real estate broker, no less than 8,000 acres of land in Florida, ranging northward from Lake Okeechobee and com- prising a large part of Osceola and De Soto counties. The Shakers are now con- sidering the purchase of 8,000 more acres, making 16,000 in all, which will include an entire township of Florida. Some time ago the Shakers bought a small tract in California and another in northern Ohio, but neither has proved suitable for the es: tablishment of a large colony, hence they turned their eye to the south, and have concluded a satisfactory purchase. As a result of the deal the Shakers will establish the largest settlement in this county, and, as the land in Florida is rich and fertile, the settlement will begin with every nat- ural advantage. —______+«+____ “The Pennsylvania railrcad is the best and popular route to Atlantic City and Cape May.
