8 THE EVENING STAR, THURSDAY, JULY 11, 1895-TEN PAGES. SUBURBAN NEWS ANACOSTIA. ‘The third evening of the lawn party given by the ladies of St. Teresa’s Catholic Church, Rev. T. B. Hughes, pastor, which eccurred last night, was as great a success as either of its predecessors, and the fea- ture, a “cake walk,"’ given under the direc- tion of Prof. Washington, who enjoys the distinguished title of the colored Beau Brummel of Washington, was enjoyed Im- mensely, as was also a buck dance by Wil- lie Collier. An interesting program has also been arranged for tonight. The strike has interfere] to some extent with the attend- ance of friends of the parish whose homes are in Washington, and who have hereto- fore patronized everything that was held for the benefit of St. Teresa’s Church, but with this exception the ladies in charge ere receiving as much encouragement as they anticipated. 2 The members of the Garden Memorial Presbyterian Church, of which Rev. Joseph B. North is pastor, will hold an important congregational meeting tonight. It is thought likely that a succesor to the la- mented Carlton E. Sneil, whose untimely death by drowning a few weeks ago was recorded in The Star, and who held one of the most important offices in the church, will then be chosen. Considerable excitement was occasioned on Minnesota avenue yesterday afternoon by the horse attached to a vehicle owned and driven by Albert Thomas becoming frightened on Harrison street near Pierce street and running away. The animal dashei down the street at a furious rate, and after proceeding a few squares collided with a cart, upon which George Collins, the driver, was riding. Collins was thrown off and one of his arms was broken. Mrs. A. B. Garden of Minnesota avenue has gone to Herndon, Va., where she will for a few days be the guest of Mrs, J. B. North, who is spending the summer at Mr. North's farm near that place. Yesterday was a busy day with the po- lice department at Anacostia, and the fol- lowing arrests were made: Walter King, charged with vagrancy by Policeman Far- quhar; Daniel and Letitia Robinson, threats, by Policeman Branson; Harry Lipscomb, drunk, by Officer Hagan; Frank Vanguder, drunk and disorderly, and Leon- ard Anderson, drunk, both by Officer Rea- gan. ————— HYATTSVILLE. The democratic state central committee for Prince George’s county, consisting of Messra. Wm. B. Clagett, Aquilla T. Rob- fnson and Fillmore Beall, has issued the call for the democratic primaries to be held in the several election districts of this county Saturday, July 27, at 4 o'clock p.m., for the purpose of selecting five delegates to represent each district in the county convention to be held at Upper Marlboro’ Tuesday, July 39, at 12 o'clock m. It will be the duty of this convention to nominate three candidates for the house of delegates, one candidate for clerk of the circuit court, one candidate for treasurer, one candidate for state’s attorney, one candidate for sheriff, two candidates for county commis- stoners, three candidates for judges of the orphans’ court, one candidate for register of wills and one candidate for county sur- veyor. This convention will also select four delegates to represent the county in the state convention, which will convene at Baltimore Wednesday, July 31. It is gen- erally believed that Wm. B. Clagett of Marlboro’ will secure the nomination for clerk of the cireu!t court. Benjamin D. Siephen of Bladensburg will be selected for the office of county treasurer, Geo.M. Smith of Bowle will be the candidate for sheriff and that Messrs. R. E. Brandt of Pi: away and S. G. Townshend of Brady: will be two of the three candidates for the house of delegates. The delegates to the State convention will, in all probability, be in favor of Spencer C. Jones of Montgom- ery county for governor. An impromptu dance was given at the old Hyatt mansion last evening by a number of the young people of the village. Among those present were Mr. and Mrs. R. Ford Combs, Mr. and Mrs. Wm. Porter, Mr. and Mrs. H. C. Dobbs, Mr. and Mrs. Albert Her- bert, Misses Julia Bulloch, Florence Carr, Fannie Mudd, Alice Owens, Ellen Combs, Mary Wells, and Messrs, Charlie Qwens, Will and Hodges Carr, Dorsey, Archie Wells, Ed Fuller, Wright Rives, Howard Moran and Dr. Alfred H. Wells. Mr. and Mrs. J. B. Burns‘de have return- ed from their bridal trip. The Valentine Katser property, situated near Bowie and consisting of a quarter of an acre of land and improvements, has been sold to Mr. J. Harry Dalgy of Balti- more for $360. The horse attached to the dayton of Mr. E. L. Payne took fright yesterday morn- ing and ran up Maryland avenue, creating considerable excitement. The animal was caught near the home of Dr. Richardson. Mr. Payne was thrown out, but fortunately escaped injury. —__ FALLS CHURCH. Pionéer Lodge, I. O. G. TENLEY TOWN, The annual picnic of the Tenleytown | Methodist Episcopal Church and Sunday school was held yesterday and was a com- plete success in every particular, except that unfortunately during the exercises a platform upon which a number of the children were sitting fell, and several of them were painfully, but not seriously hurt, and one, Miss Dean, had to be sent home. During the day addresses were made by the pastor, Rev, E. H. Smith, and Mr. Ewing, a leading member. of Foundry M. E. Sunday school, Washington. There was also singing by the scholars and teachers, and music by the Tenleytown Cornet Band, under the leadership of Master Guy Hoppe. Rev. Dr. Laney of Linden, Md., whose ill- ness has heretofore been referred to in The Star, continues in a very. critical condition, and his recovery, on account of his ad- vanced age, tis not now thought to be probable. ‘The funeral of the late Kinsey Brewer, who, as stated in The Star, committed sul- cide by shooting in Washington a few days ago, took place from the Tenleytown Methodist Episcopal Church, which was crowded with sympathizing relatives and friends. The services were conducted by the pastor, Rev. E. H. Smith, assisted by officers of the Masonic fraternity, to which Mr. Brewer belonged. The burial was made in the cemetery attached to the church. Rev. E. H. Smith will Saturday go to Forrestville, Md., to assist the pastor of that charge, Rev. Mr. Orem, in holding reunion services Sunday, and the pulpit of the Tenleytown church will on that day be occupied by Rev. Mr. Bell of Georgetown, a well-known worker connected with the Central Union Mission. Arrangements are being made to have a great celebration of the fiftieth anniversary of the Methodist Episcopal Church, at an early day. The proper date has passed, but the members of the church and congre- gation regard, with regret, the unintention- al oversight of not obserying the interest- ing period, when this should have been at- tended to, and on the approaching occasion will take steps to leave a record that will be of service to the historian or newspaper man whose duty it shall be to write about or report the events connected with the centennial of the church when that shall arrive nearly fifty years hence. The citizens of Tenleytown, without re- gard to race, sex or previous condition, are so pleased with their new fire apparatus and the manner in which the members of the brigade are learning to handle it in ease their services shall be needed, as well as with the generosity of Mrs. A. U. Hunt in providing the brigade with a building for a headquarters, that they will in the near future hold a public meeting for the pur- pose of devising means to promote the further efficiency in every department where supplies of any neces! or useful scrt are lacking. Prominent speakers have been invited to address the meeting, and all who have been heard from have ac- cepted. The Gate of the proposed meeting has not yet been selected, but will be in a day or two. The lawn party recently given by the ladies of St. Ann’s Catholic Church was so seriously interfered with by the rain which fell during the latter part of that day that they will give another party at Dumblane grounds, Wednesday next. ——._—_ RIVERDALE. Wednesday, the 10th, Mr. Joe Blundon received the congratulations of his many friends on attaining his forty-eighth birth- day, and replied by giving his well-wishers a delightful entertainment at Oak Lawn. The house and grounds were prettily il- luminated by Chinese lanterns, and a dis- play of fireworks made a fitting ending for the day. The estate of P. W. Browning, adjoining Riverdale, has been divided among his sons, each receiving an extensive piece of ground, that of Arthur Browning, particularly, cov- ering about twenty acres. This division of the estate does. not extend to the home- stead, which is retained for the benefit of the entire family..T. F. Browning has commenced the erection of a fine house on his portion, an@-it fs the intention of the other brothers to follow suit in the near future. The old Calvert mansion, on Washington avenue, has been rented for the season to Mrs. Scott of Washington, as a summer resort. Among the number stopping with her at present are Mr. and Mrs. Torbert and son, Mr. and Mrs. Manderson, Miss Whiteley, and Messrs. Weller, Sawyer, Nichols, Canis and Hatt. The surveying party. for the Washington and -Baltimore bouievard have completed their iine at Riverdale. The line begins at Dupont Circle and continues“ out Maple avenue through the subdivision. Mr. Charles EB. Earl of Washington avenue is again at his desk after an illness of six months. Mr. Earl has been a great sufferer from rheumatism, contracted while in the service of the United States navy. = BROOKLAND. Mr. E. S. Morgan has broken ground for a residence on Bunker Hill road. Through the kindness of Mr. Emery the Montgomery County Mutual Fire Insurance Company of Sandy Spring has placed at the disposal of the Brookland Fire Com- pany the barrel engine now at Mt. Pleas- ant. The Brookland Drum Corps will meet Friday night at the Brookland Hall for the purpose of reorganizing. It is through the instrumentality.of Messrs. Gass and Brashears, who have promised to do all in thelr power to aid the corps, that this meeting is brought about. Only lads over twelve years of age are eligible, and from the good material to be found in Brook- land there is no reason why the member- ship should not be large. There was a pleasant children’s lawn party given at Mrs. Barton’s Tuesday night. The lawn was artistically decorated with lanterns, and the whole affair reflects great credit upon the young committee, censisting of Carrie Julien, Merle Barton and Lulu Julien. The children enjoyed full sway until a late hour. At the late meeting of the Baptist Young People’s Union Mr, Kavanaugh Warren presided.
