Discovery of a Bloody Murder at Omaha. Five badly frightened indtviduals occupy ing murderers’ cells at the Omaha police station, a residence resembling in many respscts a slaughter house, ard the unac- countable absence of John Selban are the features of a peculiarly mysterious tragedy which is engaging all Omaha police and de- tectives. Selban is the supposed victim, while. Mr. and Mrs. Mate Makin, Anton Buckovitz, John Urkan and*John Druboitz are the prisoners. Robbery is the presum- ed object of the crime, but the feature most confusing to the police 13 the unex- plained absence of the corpse. No. 1250 Pierre street, a boarding house, is the scene of the crime. A hasty ex- amination of the bed room in which the man supposed to have been murdered slept, showed signs of a bloody conflict. A great pool of blocd was located near the head of the bed, and the bed clothes were saturated in several places with blood. Bloody foot- prints were found on the bed quilt and pillow. The door casing, wall and floor was stained in several places with blood. A razor, a pocket knife and an fron crowbar, about two and a half feet long, were found in the bed room, which, from appearances, were used as weapons in the struggl The strange demeanor of the inmates, of the house was such as to prompt the d tectives to place them under arrest. Sev- eral of the persons blood on_ their clot All concerned are Poles. Monday the old missing man secured $1,000 from the country. To obtain this money the crime, it is thought, was committed. The police are of the opinion that after the murder was committed the clothes of the murdered man, which were found on the river bank, were placed where found for the purpose of leaving the impression t the man had committed suicide by drown- irg himself in the river. The immediate discovery of the clothes and the early appearance of the police the cottage prevented the murderers from carrying out the further arrangements of, removing the tell-tale clots of blood and the bloody bed clothes. The body, it is believed, was removed from the’ house some time during the night, judging from the fresh wagon wheel tracks directly in front of the house, which indicated that a wagon had been backed up to the sidewalk in front. The condition of the blood on the floor indicates the killing could not bave been done much later than midnight. The fact that Selban’s clothes and su penders were soaked with blood is taken to indicate that he was killed soon after urned home Tuesday night and un- ed. Several residents of the neigh- bdrhood say he had a large amount of money Tuesday, and that ne said he had received it frem the old country. One of the men who was arrested told an officer that Selban had got a lot of money recent- ly. The police are trying to find the body Two trunks were taken from the house dur- ing the night and sent to St. Louis. The police are investigating this clew, and think the body has been cut up and placed in the trunks. SEEKING oo PEACE I} SAMOA. Negotiations Being Conducted With 2 Small Hope of Success. The steamer Alameda brought to San Francico last evening the following ad- vices from Samoa, dated June 19: The situation between the two parties here has reached a stage which may be described as critical. The rebel party last week held a meeting attended by several thousand. Although the rebels expressed a desire for a peage they made the priffci- pal condition cf the maintenance of peace the deposition of King Malletoa. Their meeting s held under the guidance of H. J. Moore. There ts a strong feellag against him for his action in the matter, and it is expected that he will be called to account for it. A meeting was held on the German warship Buzzard yesterday, where six of the rebel chiefs, a like number of the go’ ernment party and three consuls attended. Nothing has, so far, transpired as to what was done. It was impossible for the con- suls to arrange a peace, having for its basis the downfall of Malietoa It is thought ere long more blood will be shed. No feeling of unity prevails among the for- eign officers; in fact, relations are very much strained among them. Seventh Da ntists Jailed. Eleven of the Seventh Day Adventis‘s on trial at Dayton, Tenn., charged with an infraction of the state Sunday law, were found gullty and fined from $5 to $8.50, which they refused to pay, and went to jail te work out their fine. A movement bas been started to ing ebout a modifica- tion of the state Sunday law. AUCTION SALES. La rs.
