10 THE EVENING STAR, TUESDAY, JULY 2, 1895-TWELVE PAGES. AFFAIRS IN GEORGETOWN Burglars Run Riot in Section Across the Greek. Whe Arrest of Graham Believed to Be a2 Important One—Other Local Notes, as An attempt to burglarize Mayfield & Hieston’s coal office was made last night. The burglary was “nipped” by Perry Barnes, the watchman. He saw the mid- night visitor at work on the southern win- dow of the office, and started for assistance to capture him. “Cole,” a cartman, wes eroused, and help was gotten from the gas house, above the office, on 20th street. The nefarious worker, however, sniffed a rat and slunk off. The fellow was plainly seen by Barnes. He was a white man, about twenty-cight, h light trousers. He wore no coat. For some time in the evening the man had been seen hanging around the place, and prying suspiciously in the win- dows and door. Three different attempts have been made in the past three years to burgiarize this office. The last night the visitor far as to drill holes in the safe ch off the inserted charges. Papers were injured, but no money was si ‘ed, the explosion, no doubt, frighten- «ing the fellow off. Graham's Arrest. Charges are thickening against Joe Gra- ham, who was arrested on Saturday. The only burglary he has confessed to is Scheele’s, but that he also had a hand in Pierce and Lawton’s is evidenced by the finding of a wrench or chisel on the Scheele premises that has been jdentified by Pierce and Lawton as a tool taken from their place. Detective Frank Burrows regards the arrest as important as that of “Jack the Slasher,” as his work has been equally as annoying.. He believes that he can fasten the guilt of eleven recent burglaries in Georgetown and the first ward on Gra- ham's shoulders. I. 0. 0. F. Election, At the last regular meeting of Covenant Lodge, No. 13, I. O. O. F., the following named officers were elected for the term be- ginning July 1: Noble grand, Chas. B. Wise; vice grand, M. M. Brower; recording secretary, H. A. Howes; financial secretary, Past Grand E. H. Harner; treasurer, Past Grand W. H. Rollins. For trustees, P. G. E. H. Harner L. K. Mangum and BG also the following named pa: were elected as repre- sentatives to the Grand Lodge of the Dis- trict of Columbia: Geo. Bennett, W. H. Harnest, J. L. Irwin, J. J. Cher E. H. Herner and Grand Warden Dr. T. J. Jones and Past Grand Master Theo. F. Kinney. Avother Burglary. A successful entry was made last night by a burglar at the home of Mr. D. S. Par- rott, 16%) Valley street, and $41 were stolen, the contents of a pocket book. The second story window was ferced opened. The po- lice are on their mettle here and will strain their attention to secure these midnight marauders. Rivalry is running high among the blue coats and something of import- ance is bound to transpire in the taking of prisoners. Graham, as is indicated by fhese later burglaries, was not the only fellow engaged in burglary. He may have been the le: but his assistants are stepping forth with a determination to equal him. Denth of Capt. Berry. Capt. John P. Berry, a citizen who has been long known and respected here, dicd on Sunday at Providence Hcspital. His death was the outcome of an attack of typhoid fever. Capt. Berry's title came to him from long official connection with the Knights of St. Peter. For years he has been foreman of Weaver, Kengla & Co.'s scap works on Water stregt. Capt. Berry has a brother in Washington and several in New York Notes. Mr. W. Nordlinger and family have gone t» Atlantic City for the summer. and Mrs. B. Having been appointed vice presidents of the South Carolina Suffrage Aid Soctety, which was organized Friday evening, of the Metropolitan Baptist Church, many of the colored pastors of this city Sunday devoted their sermons to the discussion of the political status of the negroes of South Carolina, as told to them Friday evening by Congressman Murray of that state. A h the attendance at the many color hes yesterday was small, those pre ent seemed much interested in the different hases of the political status of the negro in the southern states. Rev. George W. Lee of the Vermont Avenue’ Baptist Church, who was selected as the president of the y association, says that he is in earnest about the matter, and that he will urge all of the colored pastors of the churches of this city to make unusual ef- forts in behalf of the securement of a fund here to assist in the employment of counsel to take the question of the registration laws of South Carolina before the Supreme Court. The services of a prominent law firm of this city have already been secured, and a South Carolina firm will assist in prosecuting the case. In conversation with a representative of The Star today the president of the new association said: “Gur object is to raise means and employ competent counsel to control the registra- tion laws of South Carolina, which, we be- lieve are contrary to the Constitution of the United States. I think that the people will respond Uberally to our appeals to them if the matter is put before them properly. I shall urge the subject before the min- isters of this city, and expect their co- operation. I shall call a mass meeting to De held at my church next Monday night, and we wiil secure able men to speak upon the importance of the colored people here giving their support to this movement. The colored people of South Carolina are poor and unable to ‘contribute the necessary means to test the case, and it becomes the duty of the colored people everywhere to give them atd, for if South Carolina can enact a law that will disfranchise 140,000 negroes, it will not be long before every State in the south will adopt similar-laws.”” ———. Held for Trial. Louis H. Berry, the young man who kill- ed James A. Newsom at Carlin Springs, Va., last Thursday evening by striking him with a base ball bat, was given a pre- limirary hearing before Justice Burch Sat- urday afternoon. Mr, Berry's lawyer was Mr. F. L. Smith of Alexandria, who pre- sented the plea of self defense, maintaining that the blow was not struck until Berry had plenty of reason for believing that his fe was in imminent peril. J ‘ce Burch, however, decided that Berry had used un- necessary violence in administering the blow, and held him in $2,000 bonds to await the action of the grand jury, which meets next September. Mrs. Margaret Carter, at Whose house the affair happened, became his surety and Berry was released from custody. | Tas Marriage Licenses.
