“THE EVENING STAR, 20 SATURDAY, JUNE 29, 1895-TWENTY PAGES. Ps ———— ¥ = J IN THE CHURCHES | Corererstional church lett last week for AUCTION SALES.” AUCTION SALES. AUCTION SALES, AUCTION SALES. Newman. oe The near upproach of summer always brings around to the ministers, as well as to pecple in general, thoughts of vacation. The practice of closing the churches en- tirely during the hot weather has fallen in- to disuse, and now there will hardly be a single edifice closed this year, except for zepairs. A number of ministers have taken | cccasion to cond®mn long vacations in their ministerial associations, and several have recently expressed their views on the same subject from the pulpit. The growth of the cungregation of St. Micheel’s and All Angels’ Church has dem- onstrated the necessity for an enlargement of the seating capacity, and during the summer means will be taken to build a gal- lery. Special attention is to be given to the work of the Sunday school, which will be conducted after a new and unique plan. not yet perfected. Last Sunday was observed as a special revival day at the Fifth Baptist Church, the pastor, Rev. Dr. C. C. Meador, preach- ing an appropriate sermon in the morning and the young people holding a meeting in the evening. Dr. Meador will soon have completed his thirty-ninth year as pastor of Fifth Church, the church never having had any other minister and the doctor rever having served in another charge. Holy Name Commandery of the Knights of St. John commemorated the feast of their patron saint last Sunday by receiving cemmunion in a body at the early mass. Director D. W. Middleton of the vested choir of Trinity P. &. Church has enlarged the scope of the choir still further by ferming two quartets from among the members. One is exclusively of male voices, end is composed as follows: Dr. A. C. Mer- riam, first bass; Mr. Lane, first tenor; Dr. E. F. Frost, second tenor; and J. Strother Miller, jr., second bass. In the other, which is composed of mixed voices, Miss Halley sings soprano, Miss Ballman alto, Mr. Lane tenor and Precentor Middleton bass. Rev. Rumsey Smithson, D. D., presiding elder for the district of the Methodist Episcopal Church South in which this city is situated, has removed his residence from Alexandria to Washington. Rev. Dariel W. Skellenger, pastor of the Sixth Presbyterian Church, will leave week after next, accompanied by Mrs. Skellen- ger, for the Christian Endeavor convention at Boston, after which he will go to Spring Luke, N. J., to remain until the Ist of Sep- tember. Last summer the church was put Into thorough order, and so this year noth- ing of any importance will be done to it. ‘Ihe services will be continued as usual in the pastor’s absence by a minister not yet selected. The Sunday school of St. Stephen’s Cath- olic Church has closed for the summer. St. Stephen's has been particularly successful in this branch of church work, and the at- tendance at the school is constantly on the increase. By the time the autumn sets in the choral service of the Vermont Avenue Christian Church will have been considera- bly improved. This wlil be done by in- creasing the choir. The choir gallery is to be enlarged and improved during the warm season. In the last month or two considerable Progress has been made on the new edifice of St. Andrew's P. E. Church. It is expect- ed that the congregation will occupy it be- fore the summer is over. Rev. Dr. Laney, one of the oldest Meth- céist ministers in this part of the country, is lying seriously iil at his home in Linden, | and is not expected to live. His disease is old age. He has served a number of charges in Washington and vicinity. A strong effort is to be made by the dele- gation from this city to the Epworth League convertion now in session in Chat- tanooga to bring the 1897 convention to this city. Among the Washington repre- sentatives are President William B. Mat- thews and Secretary Frank T. Israel, and they are bringing all their influence to bear in that direction. If successful, they will lose no time, but will go to work on ar- rangements as soon as possibl A party of musicians left New York Wed- nesday on the steamship City of Berlin for Europe, to be gone nearly all the summer. They visit all the large cathedral towns of Engiand. In the party ts Dr. Gabriel F. Johnston of this city, leader of the choir of the First Presbyterian Church. Rey. George N. Luceock, D. D., moderator of the Washington presbytery, has issued a call for the presbytery to meet on the 8d of next month in the Takoma Park Presbyterian Church. The occasion is the ordination and installation to the ministry of licentlate John Van Ness, who has been called to that church from the presbytery of New Brunswick, N. J. It is not very often that @ double ceremony of this kind occurs, and by reason of this fact the ex- ercises will possess an added interest. Last Sunday at St. Cyprian’s Church, the youngest Catholic Church in this city, one of the most Important organizations of the parish was established. It was the league of the Sacred Heart, which begins work with a considerable number on the rolls. ‘fhe rector of St.Thomas’ Protestant Epis- ecpal Church, Rey. John A. Aspinwall, left Washington Wednesday, accompanied by Aspinwall, for Europe, where he ex- S$ to spend some time in sight seeing. in kis absence the new assistant, Rev. W. G. Ware, will be in charge of the services, which will be continued as usual. ‘The Sunday school of the Eastern Pres- byterian Church has reached such propor- tions that ways and means are being con- sidered to accommodate the overflow. This it is proposed to do by devoting the Sunday school rooms entirely to the primary and intermediate scholars, and by holding the adult department in the auditorium of the church. A committee of the Lutheran Ministers’ Agsociation, consisting of Drs. Domer and Hamma, have found a favorable site on Whitney avenue between 13th and 14th Streets for a new church edifice. While Tothing in the shape of work is to be un- dertaken this summer, still it is decided that if the General Chureh Extension So- ciety will furnish the money with which to buy the lot the local pastors will raise the funds for the buildimg. The exterior of the Swedenborgian Church at the corner of 16th and Corcoran Btreets northwest, with the exception of the roof, is about completed. The beams and cross pieces for this are being placed in position, and by the time the slate is on the little stone work which yet remains to be done to the front will have been fin- ished. A statue of St. Francis Xavier, one of the most important figures in the history of the Society of Jesus, was recently un- veiled and bl+ssed tn St. Aloysius Church. A laly member of the .parish was the donor. Presiding Elder Luther B, Wilson is ar- Yanging tor a camp meeting, to take place fn St. Mary's county, near Leonardtown, beginring the 24th of next month and con- tinuing for one week. Howard Wilbur Ennis to deliver a course of lec- | tures before the students of that institu- | tion next fall. The extensive tmprovements to the Fif- teenth Presbyterian Church were fully com- | pleted veek when the new organ wa finished and formally tested. It gave c plete satisfaction, and that fact, together | with the increase in the seating capacity to 00 and improvements in the lighting and Ventilation, caused the pastor and congre- @ation to feel fully repaid for the money expended.
