10 ; THE EVENING STAR, “TUESDAY, JUNE 25, 1895-TWELVE PAGES. FREEDMEN’S HOSPITAL CHANGES. They Are Intended to Increase the Power of the Institution for Good. ‘The changes which will take place at Freedmen’s Hospital July.1 are a part of the plan for the reorganization of the institution adopted by Dr. Daniel H. Will- fams, the surgeon in chief, and approved by Secretary Smith. Dr. Williams states that an erroneous fmpression exists in some quarters about the intention of the new plan and the future conduct of the hospital under it. Regarding the abolish- ment of the places held by Dr. Joon R. Francis and Dr. Furman D. Shadd, who received, respectively, salaries of $1,800 and $000 per year, Dr. Williams says that it is his intention to have a medical staff coi nected with the hospital, such as oth similar institutions are equipped with, and that it would not be just or fair to pay two physicians on the staff and fall .to Temunerate the others. Physicians in general practice therefore will not be salaried at the hospital, but their places will be supplied by internes, who will be young graduates from the va- rious medical colleges, and who will tem- Porarily reside at the hospital, and whose work will be under the supervision of the medical staff. They will receive no sal- aries, because the practical experience they will receive will be of immense value to them professionally, but the sum of $25 per month will be devoted to the expenses of each interne from the hospital funds. A large part of the salaries heretofore paid to Drs. Francis and Shadd will be here- after devoted to the support of the nurses in trainirg at the hospital and for the expenses of the internes. ‘The medical staff of Freedmen’s Hos. ital has been selected and is as follows: jurgeon in chief, Daniel H. Williams, M. D.; consulting physician, T. B. Hood, M. D.; attending physician: ett, M. D.; G. N. Perry, M. D.; S. R. Watts, M. D., and Thomas Martin, M. D.; geons, E. A. Balloch, M. D., and N. F.
