10 THE EVENING STAR, MONDAY, JUNE 24, 1895-TWELVE PAGES. SUBURBAN NEWS ANACOSTIA, A new union Sunday school was organ- ized at ‘Twining City yesterday by Mr. Robert H. Jordan of Anacostia, who will for the present act as superintendent. The attendance, both of children and adults, was good and the outlook is very en- couraging. The mission which was begun Sunday night last at St. Teresa’s Catholic Church, Rev. T. B. Hughes, pastor, by Revs. Fa- thers O’Kane and Campbell of New York, closed last night. All the services have been remarkably well attended, and-it is believed that every person in the parish who has been able to do so has been pres- ent at at least one of the meetings. It is ex- ected that much good will result from he mission. Walter C. Dutrow, who escaped from St. Elizabeth's Asylum’ Friday night, was re- turned to the institution yesterday, having been recaptured Saturday in Washington. John Malloy, charged with cruelty to nimals, was arrested yesterday by Officer ranson and released on depositing $5 col- lateral at the Anacostia police station. ———— FALLS CHURCH. Mr. O. F. Waters of Washington, has rent- ed the house of Mrs. Matilda Rawlings, on Little Falls street, and will move out on the Ist of July. , Mrs. A. P. Eastman has returned from Ithaca, N. Y., where she has been visiting her son, who is attending the Cornell Uni- versity, and who soon sails for England ‘with the Corneil Glee Club, of which he isa member. The club purposes giving con- certy in the principal cities of England, Scotland, Ireland and other foreign coun- tries. Mr. Nathaniel Tyler and daughter, Mrs. Armstrong, of Washington have rented the Lawton place for thé summer months, and will occupy same on ihe Ist of July. There was a large attendance at the union services held last night at the Con- gregational Church, under the auspices of the Christian Endeavor Society. Rev. J. H. Jenkins, pastor of the church, con- ducted the services, and Rev. J. T. Barver of the Baptist Church preached an excel- lent sermon from the text, “Because thou knewest not the time of thy visitation,” taken from the nineteenth chapter of Luke, forty-fourth verse. All the pastors of the town were present. Previous to the serv- ices the usual meeting of the Young Peo- ple’s Society was held, led by Mr. J. R. Jacobs, the subject being “Missions.” Miss Jennie Gutridge of Washington is visiting Miss Leiia Jacobs. Mr. and Mrs. J. M. Thorne left this morn- ing for Boston to attend the session of the uncene Lodge of the Order of Good Tem- plars. Mrs. E. M. Stevens of Baltimore delivered a@n interesting missionary address in the M. E. Caurch Sunday morning. A meeting of the town council will be held at the council hall tonight. ee ° HYATTSVILLE. A political meeting in the interest of John W. Belt for clerk of the court, and, Geo. Holmes for the house of delegates, was held by the republicans at Landover last Saturday evening. Representatives from Kent,Bowie and Bladensburg districts were Present. The meeting was prestded over by Edwin B. Garges and addressed by Geo. Holmes and Moses Harris of this district. Messrs. J. M. Nesbit and D. E. Graves of this district are also candidates for the house of delegates. Mr.Belt, who has held - the office of clerk of the court for a num- ber of years, is being opposed for the re- publican nomination by Mr. James T. Per- kins, formerly county treasurer. Both can- didates are strong and popular men in their party, and a severe contest for this coveted prize will probably ensue at the coming primaries, which will chose dele- gates to the county nominating convention. The other republican candidates for coun- ty offices are said to be Frank W. Hill of Marlboro’, for treasurer; Roger Bellis of Vansville district, and Geo. E. Lowree of Laurel district, for state’s attorney, and Wesley BeaH of Kent district for sheriff. The corps cf engineers, under Chief En- gineer John D. Riley, which are located at this place, have laid out®*the preliminary line of that portion of the proposed electric railway between Washington and River- dale. This line commences at the terminus of Rhode Island avenue extended and runs in a northeasterly direction to the farm of Capt. Bartlette, near Highlands, thence north to a point at the intersection of Mel- 4 Tose avenue, with the Columbia road, near the residence of Mr. Adam Geib, thence along Melrose avenue to the intersection of Locust and Rallroad avenues, thence along Railroad avenue to Maryland avenue, at a point near Spencer street, thence to a point on Maryland avenue to a point near the residence of Mr. F. J. Gramlich, thence in a northeasterly direction to Riverdale Park. It seems to be the object of the pro- moters of this road to run their line as near the Baltimore and Ohio railroad track as possible, so as to be able to com- pete with that company. The corps of engineers will, in all probability, remain some time at this place. Mr. Isaac Wermwag, aged seventy-nine years, died yesterday morning at the resi- dence of his daughter, Mrs. E.W. Smith, in this village. He will be buried at Glen- wood cemetery tomorrow. Rev. Chas. J. S. Mayo, rector of the Pink- ney Memorial Church, will preach an in- teresting sermon to the Masons of this place at that church this evening. > BRIGHTWOOD. The usual meeting of the Senior Branch ef the Ohristiarl Endeavor Society was held last night at Emory Chapel. Miss Virgie Brown occupied the chair and con- ducted the meeting in the discussion of the topic, “The Worid for Christ and Our Worlds for Christ,” the responses to which by the other members had a pleasing tenor and displayed the proper spirit. ‘The chorus singing was an entertaining feature, in which much progress and improvement had been marked. ‘Phe announcement was made from the chair that next Sunday will be consecration Sunday, and on that occasion the Rev. Dr. Stiles of Washington, by request of the pastor of Emory Church, will deliver a sermon at the chapel. Building in this section is not altogether at a standstill. The new subdivision of this place known as Erightwood Park now has about fifty houses occupied by fam- ilies. Two residences are in the course of construction; one, quite a large frame, on the corner of Sth and Flint street, which is being built by Mr. Clayton of Washing- ton, will be completed by July 1, when the owner will move into this beautiful new home. The other is. being erected by Mr. Buttenheimer, the well-known Washington grocer. Mrs. Sands of Flint street, Brightwood Park, has her mother and fatier and sister, Mrs. Smith, all of Wilmington, Del., visit ing her for a few weeks. Among the successful candidates in the examination for admission to the Washing- ton Normal School was Miss M. Edith Rob- inson of this place. = Jacob Franz and wife have sold a lot in Brightwood Park to Messrs. Theodore and Frederick Thomas. Mrs. S. S. Cox, wife of the late Repre- sentative “Sunset” Cox, is visiting Mr. and Mrs. W. V. Cox here. >— VIE Mr. Charles Dyer, a well-known resident of this place, who takes great pleasure in bee raising, was severely, and for a time it was feared fatally, stung by some of his bees Thursday last. Mr. Dyer undertook to remove some honey from a hive when five or six of the bees alighted on the back of his neck and stung him in a terrible manner. In a little while Mr. Dyer became partially paralyzed and it was several hours before Dr. L. D. Leith, who was sent for, succeeded in bringing him out of un- consciousness. Mr. Dyer’s condition js still quite serious, but today he seems to be tm- roving and it {s now belleved he will en- {rely recover. There are many beekeepers in the vicinity of Vienna, but, so far as is known, Mr. Dyer Is the first to suffer from the attacks of the bees. Mr. Arthur Lewis has just completed a pretty resideace on Maple avenue, adding much to the beguty of that already hand- some thoroughfare. ‘The ladies of the Methodist Episcopal Church will have a corcert for the benefit of the church Thursday next, under the auspices of Mrs. Belle Kirkham. The farmers of this section of Fairfax unty are in the midst of an abundant y harvest, but with this exception all the other gri crops are badly in need oe growing Ps iy Mr. O. F. Stotts of Vienna, who was badly injured in a railroad accident at Akron, Ohio, while on his way to the world’s fair, and who has suffered ever since from the effects, has received from the railroad company a check for a handsome sum of Money in satisfaction of his claim for damages. Invitations have been received by a large number of citizens to participate with the citizens of Falls Church in appropriately celebrating the glorious Fourth. A big time is also expected to take place on the same day in Vienna. ———__ Granted Sick Lenve. Passed Assistant Engineer Stacy Potts has been detached from the bureau of steam engineering and granted three months’ sick leave. en Change in the Russian Legation. ‘The Russian charge, Mr. Botkin, has in- formed the State Department that Mr. de Meck has been selected as second secretary of legation here, and will arrive in New York from Europe, with his wife and chil- dren, July 2. + 2+______ Civil Service Boards. Two important civil service internal rev- enue boards have been appointed, as fol- lows: Philadelphia—Horace Litz, chairman; J. Edward Ryan, secretary, and John B. Frill. Hartford, Conn.—George R. Case, chair- man; Joseph Mairson, secretary, and Jas. Cc. Fox. . +e -______ All on Duty Agnin. Secrétary Herbert has received a cable- gram from Admiral Kirkland, at Kiel, stating that none of the sailors had been seriously injured in the explosion on the launch of the cruiser San Francisco, and that all were on duty again. The admiral did not give the names of those injured, evidently regarding the subject too trifling for details. 2. AUCTION SALES. FUTURE Days. RATCLIFFE, DARR & CO., AUCTIONEERS.
