10 THE EVENING STAR, WEDNESDAY, JUNE 12, 1895-TWELVE PAGES. AFFAIRS IN ALEXANDRIA Regular Semi-Monthly Meeting of the City Council. Many Other Notes of General and Local Interest — The Tables Turned—A Correction. - ‘The regular sem!-monthly meeting of the city council was held last night, with a fair attendance in both boards. Consid- erable business was transacted. A com® munication was received from the mayor notifying council of the removal of Capt. W. H. Travers of the chain gang, for dere- liction of duty, an account of which ap- peared in The Star. The mayor also called attention to the fact that the resignation of the city health officer, Dr. J. T. Miller, had been handed him, that officer refusing to serve further unless the salary was in- creased to such an extent as to puy for the time necessary. The matter was referred to the finance committee. The committee on finance and the committee on general laws had no reports to make. The com- mittee on streets recommended that the petition of Mrs. L. Wolf for the removal of the watch box at the corner of Kirg and Fayette streets be not granted. The report of the corporation attorney was re- ceived, showing that the city had not the right to grant the use of its streets to the C. C. Smoot Sons Company for put- ting in a switch at the tan yard, and the T™atter was referred to a conference com- mittee, who recommended that the report be received. The matter of repairing Fay- ette street between King and Cameron streets was referred to the committee on streets. The canairman of the committee Btated that the grade-of the railroad tracks on that street would have to be raised about eighteen inches before the Tepairs could be made. The street is now in a very deplorable condition, and has been so for some time. The committee on public property were instructed to fit up room No. 8 in the city hall for the use of the city engineer. A communication from Capt. Geo. A. Mushback to the city auditor refusing to pay $35 for tapping a public sewer was referred to the corporation attorney. An invitation received from Rey. Father H. J. Cutler to attend the re- dedication services of St. Mary’s Church on Sunday next was received with thanks. An amendment te the license laws, fixing the telegraph and express company license @t $150 each, so as not to come in conflict with the interstate commerce law, was re- ferred to the finance committee. The joint committee on light, finance and general laws were instructed te define the duties of the clerk of the gas, now that the office of superintendentof gas has been abolished, and an ordinance increasing the salary of the clerk of gas to $1, per annum was re- ferred to the finance committee. A peti- tion was received and referred to the com- mittee on light asking that an electric light be placed at tne corner of Coluinbus and Oronoco streets. The appropriation Dill for expenses for the fiscal year ending May 31, 1596, was passed. The Police Court. Mayor Strauss presided over the pro- ceedings in the policé court this morning and disposed of the following cases: Re- becca Quill, charged with disorderly con- duct, 's dismissed, and the complainant, Mrs. Haywood, was fired $2.50 for the of- fense; Eliza Allen, charged with assaulting Ora Bell, dismissed; Frank Entwisle, Matt Williams and Remus Beach, charged with stealing a suit of clothes, were dismissed Wm. Lightfoot and —— Richards, fined $2 each for disorderly conduct; Lizz‘e Fones, charged with indecent conduct, was fined % or sixty days in the work house. The Tables Turned. A white man named Haywood swore out a warrant yesterday against a colored wo- man named Rebecca Quill, charging her with disorderly conduct and abusive lan- guage toward his wife. When the case was heard by the mayor the evidence show- ed conclusively that the Haywood woman was the one who had been disorderly and abusive, and she was fined by the mayor and the Quill woman was released. A Correction. The final exercises at the Virginia Theo- logical Seminary will be held on Wednes- day, Thursday and Friday, June 26, 27 and 28, and not today, tomorrow and Friday, as Stated in The Star yesterday. The Tan Yard Switch. Notwithstanding the fact that the city has no r‘ght to grant the use of its streets to the C. C. Smoot Sons Co. for putting in a switch into their tan yard property on Wolfe street, it has been found that the Southern Railway Company has, under the charter granted its Virginia Midland division by the legislature, the right to lay th's switch without consulting the city council, and it fs said it will more than probably do this. Geveral and Personal Notes. Miss Esther Brookes has returned from a visit to friends in Loudoun county. The family of Mr. J. T. Beckham left this morning for their country home, “Au- burn,’ near Brandy station, Culpeper coun- ty, where they will spend the summer. Among the graduates of t year's class- es at the University of Virginia from this city are Messrs. Henry Elliott and Louis Green, who took the M. D. degree, and Lawrence Leadbeater, who took both B. A. and M. A. degrees. The body of Bernard Smith, who was drowned on Sunday morning, was found yesterday afternoon. J. S. Gulick had his feet badly mashed Fees by a heavy timber falling on em. Mrs. J.
