James McLaren, pastor, were well at- tended, and an excellent program was ef- fectively rendered. The errangements for the occasion were made by the veteran superintendent of the Sunday school, Mr. H. A. Linger. A stage wes erected in the rear of the pulpit, and here the’ hundred and more chiidren of the infant depart- ment were seated. Growing palms and rare flowers in pots, with other accessories, were used to deccrate the platform. Those who assisted in the exercises were Dr. W. A. Green, Messrs. F. A. Dony, John Fort, Mrs. Albert Cator, Misses Lulu Marr, Lottie Barr, Emma_ Bowen, Lucy King, Edith Rollins, Susie Rollins, Syoelle Baker, Anna Purcell, Maud Fowler, Bertie Har- rison and Clara Barrs. North, pastor, the service being appropriate to Children’s day and the church decorated with flags, etc., as on a patriotic occasion. Patriotic songs were sung and the addresses made were with the view of impressing all wko heard them with the importance of performing their whole duty to the church and their country. Rev. F. M. Captain Austin he would recommend that several very necessary improvements be made. A merchant of Anacostia last week adver- Used that Saturday night he would scatter in front of his store five pounds of pennies. At the hour indicated a crowd of several hundred boys, of all sizes and both colors, and some of whom came a distance of sev- eral miles, gathered in the neighborhood. The seattering of the pennies was begun Fromptly on time, but so much confusion followed, and the danger that some of the smaller boys, at least, would be crushed in the scramble became so great, that Ser- geant Anderson and. Policeman Branson dispersed the crowd. The merchant in- cisted on his right to throw his pennies in the street if he saw proper to do so, but Sergeant Anderson said the danger of riot ‘was too great, and would not permit him. The funeral of Helen B., the eight-year- old daughter of Sergeant Maurice McGrath, in charge of the government property at Fort Foote, Md., who was drowned by ac- cidentally falling into the river Thursday last, took place Saturday. The Church of Our Savior, the new Epis- ecpal church in Brookland, was dedicated yesterday morning at 11 o'clock, on which occasion the congregation met in the new church building for the first time. The ser- vice was conducted in an impressive man- ner by the Rev. John T. Crowe, rector of the church, and the sermon was delivered by Rev. Dr. Buck, rector of Rock Creek. Dr. Buck took his text from the Second Epistle of Peter, 1st chapter, 2d verse: “Grace and peace be multiplied unto you through the knowledge of God and of Je- sus, our Lord.” Dr. Buck congratulated the congregation upon its success in bring- ing together the number of people it had in a brief growth of two years, and ex- pressed the hope that they would grow and multiply, and that the time would not be far distant when the church could be fully consecrated, the small debt still hanging over it being paid. Rev. Mr. Crowe made a few appropriate remarks, and then hol¥ communion was celebrated, after which quite a number of children received the ordinance of baptism. The music was rendered by a vested choir, under the direction of Mr. Guy Camp, with Mrs. Jere Johnson as organist. The choir Was composed as follows: Mrs. Neumann, Mrs. Charles Davis, Misses Annie Small, Sydney Small, Elsie Snyder, Jeane Dal- gleish, Bessie Baldwin, Mary Burr, Fanny Taylor, Amy Baldwin, Daisy Norton, An- nie and Alice Neumann and Messrs. Chas. Davis, Walter Norton and Francis Burr. A solo, “Guide Me» O Thou Great Jehovah,” was effectively sung at the offertory by Miss Sydney Small. The handsome commu- nion service, which was used for the tirst time, was the gift of a society of young ladies, called the Daughters of the Cross, and the brass prayer book rest was the gift of the Sunday school. The church was the ts of many other handsome dona- tions. Mr. Franklin T. Howe, jr., of University Heights left Saturday for Atlantic City. Children’s day was observed at the M. E. enuren in an appropriate manner yester- lay. ‘. AUCTION SALES. = THIS AFTORNOON DUNCANSON BROS., AUCTIONEERS.
