10 THE EVENING STAR, MONDAY, MAY 27, i895-TWELVE PAGES. SUBURBAN NEWS ROCKVILLE. Prof. W. L. Avis, chairman of the execu- tive committee, has arranged the follow- ing program of exercises for thé meeting of the Teachers’ Association, to be held June 28: Discussion,” “How can teachers most profitably spend their summer vaca- tion?” by Jos. L. Walters of Darnestown, George M. Boyer of Travilah and Miss Lelia M. Schaffer of Potomac; drawing, by A. G. Harley of Comus; discussion, “Should arithmetic or reading be made the basis of grading in the public schools?” by Wil- lis O. Rhodes of Hyattstown, Frank A. Pearre of Comus and Miss Agnes J. Mat- lack of Rockville; debate, “Resolved, That woman should be eligible to appointment on the district board of trustees in the schools of Montgomery county,” affirma- tive, 8. A. Layman of Sligo, Miss Mima R. Hobbs of Damascus, Herbert S. Darby of » Germantown; negative, Wilson G. Johnson of Fairland, Mrs. L. A. Langille of Kens- ington, Miss Agnes T. Kenwick of Wood- side. In addition to the above, there will be selections in vocal and instrumental music, Messrs. Spencer Watkins, Samucl Riggs and E. C. Etchison, democratic state cen- tral committee for this county, have called a meeting of state and county committees to be held here Tuesday, the 28th instant. In addition to other business, it is supposed that a time will be designated for holding the primary elections of that party. There does not as yet appear to be much interest taken in the matter, and a great many democrats openly declare that if the pri- maries are to be conducted this yeur in the same manner that they were two years ago they will remain at home and not be bound by any action taker at the same. The sudden and unexpected withdrawal of Isidor Rayner of Baltimore from the can- vass for the nomination for governor on the democratic ticket has caused quite a flutter in political circles here, and various reasons are ascribed for his action. One reason given is that, with all his experi- ence in politics, he could not stand the ludicrous new dodge adopted in Anne Arun- del county of running a Gorman ticket cn a Cleveland platform. Mr. Harry M. Hutton of this county was among the graduates of the Baltimore Uni- versity School of Law at its annual com- mencement on Tuesday. He was presented by his class with a valuable set of law books. Decoration day, 30th instant, will be ob- served with appropriate exercises at the Rockville cemetery. The religious exer- cises will be conducted by Rev. L. L. Idoyd of the M. E. Church South, an 2d- dress will be delivered by Mr. Chas. W. Prettyman and music will be furnished by the Rockville Quartet. Miss Janette Ray of Washington is visit- ing at the home of her aunt, Mrs. Edward Rabbitt, near Norbeck. The mayor and council of Rockville have purchased the Howe combined chemical fire engine and all necessary apparatus for the use of the town. The mission exercises in progress ct St. Mary’s Catholic Church during this week have attracted large congregations, both during the day and evening. —_—> HERNDON. “A Picturesque Tour of the World,” con- ducted by Mr. George F. Thompson for the benefit of Herndon Lodge, K. of P., was represented by stereopticon views in Cen- trai Hall Tuesday, the 21st. Notwithstand- ing the rain, there was a good attendance, and the lodge was financially benefited. The Fortnightly Club held its regular meeting with Mrs. F. W. Mitchell Satur- day, the 18th instant. The principal topic for consideration was parliamentary law, which was discussed quite freely, after which the hostess gave an address of wel- come, followed by miscellaneous selections, among which was a song by the president, Mrs. F. D. Stephenson. Mrs. A. C. Ramsey of Washington was one of the guests. Mrs. Sarah Day of Sommerville, Mass., has been spending the week with Mrs. E. B. Simonds. Miss Eva, daughter of. Mr. and Mrs. H. A. Barrows of Lakeland, Md., has been visit- ing a fortnight with the family of her grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. BE. H. Rideout. Dr. Percy Simpson of Linden, Ad., is also spending a few days with Drs. Detwiler. It is understood that Dr. Simpson is about to locate in Mount Pleasant, D. C. The election for county and district offi- cers passed off very quietly. Hut little in- terest was manifested, and a very light vote was cast. But little over one-fourtn of the vote of this prec was polled. A larger proportionate vote was cast for town = although not half the voters were out. The following parties were elected councilmen: B. B. Detwiler, C. M. Burton, Theo. Oliver, Frank Ballau, L. Garrett, H. N. Tolson, B. C. Garrett; clerk, E. L. Robey; sergeant, Elisha Dyer. At the meeting of the Ladies’ Aid Society held with Mrs. Burton Thursday the matter of a strawberry festival was taken up, and it = decided to hold one during the next week. ———__ LANGDON. Dr. W. C. Upkam is slowly recovering from his recent severe illnes: The family of Mr. George R. Loor of Green Vale have moved to the city for the gummer. Mrs. F. H. McKnight of Cincinnati street is spending a few days with friends in Philadelphia. The floral decorations on the spacious grounds at Rose Lawn, the home of Mr. William H. King, on the Brentwood road, are unusually fine this season, and attract the attention of all passers-by. Mr. I. J. Baker of 24th street is again confined to his room with a severe attack of the gri angdon dancing class will close the s a grand May bajl on the even- ing of the 29th instant, in Langdon Hall. ‘The ladies of the St. Barnabas Mission announce a strawberry and ice cream fes- tival for the benefit of the poor, in the mis- sior_ rooms, in Langdon Hall building, Wed- nesday e' next. Commuters to this station are required to pay a rate for four miles, while, it is claimed, that the Gistance from this station to the bumpers in the city station is a fraction less than three mi This deception on the part of the railroad, it is claimed, is kept up for the purpose of making it appear that the distance to Baltimore is forty miles, for which the company charges a single fare of three cents per mile. But Langdon people do not propose to be put out of the city one the garding the alleged di Baltim mile farther than they are, nor do they ish to pay for more miles than they ride. The first mile post cut of Washington, it is claimed, ts at 6th street northeast, less than a mile from the clty station, and that fs said to be marked “Washington, 2 miles: Baltimore, 38 miles.” The railroad officials have been asked to make the matter right, and If it is not done the citizens propose to take the case before the authorities, and ascertain if the company is not violat- ing the interstate commerce act by charg- ing one rate to Langdon and another to Brookland, both stations being an equal nee from the city, and both within the rict of Columbia. The people are good ed about it, but are determined to compe! the company to do what is right. At Friday night’s session of Langdon Lodge of Good Templars visitors were pres- ent frorn Minnehaha, D.
