10 THE EVENING STAR, THURSDAY, MAY 23, 1895-TWELVE PAGES, FOR OHIO'SGOVERNOR Republican Convention to Be Held at Zanesville, MANY NAMES ARE BEING DISCUSSED Governor McKinley Has a Prefer- ence for Nash. . POSITION REGARDING MONEY ae ee Special Dispatch to ‘The Evening Star. COLUMBUS, Ohio, May 23.—This is the last week of the canvass for nominations cn the republican state ticket. Next week the state convention will be held at Zanes- ville. Interest centers in the nomination for goverror, but contests for the sub- (rdinate places on the ticket are going on with no less severity. Excepting only in the case of the clerk of the supreme court, new names will be put on the ticket. J. B. Allen, who is serving his first term as clerk, will be nominated for a second term with no opposition. W. T. Cope, the present state treasurer, who has been twice elected, will stand for the nomination again. It is a perfectly safe prediction, however, that he will not be made the candidate. Supreme Judge Thaddeus J. Minshall is quite sure to find the same obstacle in his way to another term. He was appointed to an unexpired term and after he had served that, was elected to a full term, which he is now completing. ‘The following ate the prinélpal candidates for the nomination for governor: George K. Nash of Columbus, James H. Hoyt of Cleveland, Ebenezer W. Poe of Bowling Green, James H. Doyle of Toledo, J. War- ren Keifer of Springtield and John W. Bar- ger of Waverly. It is possible, not to say probable, that the names of Guy G. Major, mayor of Toledo; Asa S. Bushnell of Springfield and Charles H. Grosyenor of Athens, will also be presented to the convention. They are not at this time avowed candidates, but it is evident that they will not remain long out of the race if it becomes evident that there is a chance for them to secure the nomination. Much depends, it is believed, upon the attitude of Mr. Bushnell toward the guber- natorial nomination. Hig fellow-townsman, Gen. Keifer, claims that he pledged him- self that he would not be a candidate for the nomination this year. Bushnell does not deny this, but claims that he merely said he would not actively seek the nomina- tion. There is good reason to believe that the Foraker republicans stand ready to make him their candidate. State Auditor Poe has always been an ardent Foraker man, but it is evident that the leaders of the faction doubt that they can win with him. Poe was invited to see Foraker at his Cincinnati home this week, and the general opinion is that Foraker called him down to negotiate with him in regard to throwing his strength to the Foraker can- didate when it shall appear that it is no longer possible to secure the nomination himself. It is the general understanding that the strength of the state administration is to be given to Geo. K. Nash. This is probably so. Mr. Nash is persona grata not only to Gov. McKinley, but to all the leaders of the Sherman faction of the party. Of course, the governor ts not saying or doing anything openly in the matter, but wher- ever opportunity presents itself is securing a vote for Nash. Poe was a traveling salesman before he entered politics, and has acquired in that occupation the qualities of a good “mixer,” as that term is used in politics. He has traveled all cover the state, both since this canvass began and before, and has friends everywhere. While many of the other can- didates have qualities that fit them far better for filling the office of governor of the state, it is doubtful whether any of them would make a stronger candidate than Poe, and it would not be at all surprising if he should be chosen to lead the ticket. Preble county has pledged her delegates to vote for Gen. A. L. Harris of that coun- ty, now lieutenant governor of the state, @s candidate for governor. The nomination of Congressman Grosve- nor is hardly a supposable case. In a num- ber of interviews he has said recently that he is not a candidate, but that he will not run from the nomination for governor if it is thrown his way. The candidates for the subordinate places on the ticket are really ‘too numerous to mention.” A local political statistician has figured out that there are so many that if they all come up to the “scratch,” and the rule of five-minute nominating speeches obtains in the convention, it will take twelve hours simply to properly present the names to the convention. For this rea- son it has been seriously proposed to do aw: with nominating speeches. The silver question will probably not be an embarrassing one in the republican con- vention. The great majority of the party in this state are undoubtedly in favor of the single gold standard. No one believes that there is the least danger that the con- vention may declare in favor of free silver. —_—.__. THE SEAL FISHERIES. Sir Julian Pauncefote Furnishes In- formation to the State Department. Sir Julian Pauncefote, the British ambas- sador, has advised the State Department of his latest telegraphic information in re- gard to the Bering sea seal fisheries. It embraced a full list of all Canadian seal- ing vessels which have cleared for Bering sea, together with their equipment and all necessary information to permit the Amer can authorities to act intelligently. Sir Julian also took occasion to clear up some misapprehension as to the British naval vessels which will patrol Bering sea. The admiralty office at London had issued posi- tive instructions for the detail of part of the Pacific squadron for a patrol fleet in the sealing waters. In accordance with these instructions word was sent to the Can- adian officials to furnish the list of ships to the ambassador at Washington. The officials mistook this to mean a list of all the sealing vessels instead of naval ships, and accordingly the long list of private craft about to start for the sealing grounds or already on their way was prepare ‘This was a work of some time, and i preparation explains the delay in furnish- ing the department a list of naval vessels. As soon as Sir Julian received the dis- patch yesterday he telegraphed to Ottawa that the lst of ships previousiy called for referred to the naval ships, and these were desired at the earliest moment. In view of the admiralty office's instructions there is no further doubt that the patrol will be maintained, and all uneasiness of the de- partment on this score has been removed. The list of Canadian sealers operating in Bering sea will be particularly valuable to the United States revenue cutters, which are to ma: in the patrol in behalf of this countr; The conference with Sir Ju- lan was very satisfactory, and put a more ble aspect on the Bering sea ques Supreme Officers. ection of the Supreme Coun- al Arcanum at St. Louis as follows: Supreme re- gent, J. T con where CONFIDENTIAL When men or women grow confidential, one of the first things they confide is the secret of some dis- ease which they are trying to conceal from their family. All such persons should coneult Dr. R. A. Walker. He can advise and remove that skeleton from your cleset. A former sufferer from ‘constipation is Mr. ‘Thomas Holiday, who has lived in Washington for years, and who resides ut 414 New York avenue horthwest. He has suffered from chronie constipa- tion for many years: he has been treated unsue- cessfully many advertised remedies, but derived no ma- terial benefit. Under Dr. ‘Walker's treatment all of his troubles disappeared. Although Dr. Walker's practice 1s large and ex- tensive and steadily increasing, and his time is in constant demand, he has always firmly adhered to his system of ‘small fees. He never mukes a charge of any kind for consultation, examination or advice. ‘This places the wonderful’ benefit of his great skill within the reach of all. In addition to the large number of callers he rees dally, he yet finds time to anewer, personally, the many letters he constantly receives from out-of-town sufferers who seek his aid or advice. Dr. Walker makes it en fron-clad rule to only accept for treatment those cases he KNOWS he can cure. Others are candidly told their condition and sent away. His well-known sanitarium at 1411 Pennsylvania avenue, adjoining Willant’s Hotel, is open daily for consultation and treatment. Office hours, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.; Wednesday and Saturday evenings, 7 to 8; Sundays, 10 to 12. Dr. Walker never pub- lishes a name without consent. DEFAULTING PAPER CONTRACTORS. Government Publications Seriously Delayed for Want of Paper. For want of paper the government print- ing office is unable to push forward on time work needed by several of the depart- ments, especially the Interior and Post Office Depaatments. This 1s due to the failure of the new paper contractors+to furnish paper up to grade as fixed in the contract samples approved by the joint committee on printing. Public Printer Benedict, speaking of the matter, quotes one contractor as writing that he did not expect to receive the contract when he. bid, and another says: “If I had known I had to furnish such paper as you require under this sample I would not have bid at less than twice the sum on which my contract is based.” Six contractors have been re- ported to the Secretary of the Interior as defaulters under their contracts. Four others are delinquent. The matter is caus- ing serious delay in the publication of im- portant government periodicals and docu- ments. AUCTION SALES. . FUTURE DAYS. Horses. Horses.
