10 THE EVENING STAR, TUESDAY;,MAY 21, 1895-TWELVE PAGES. SUBURBAN NEWS ANACOSTIA, Rev. W. C. Gowens, pastor-elect of Hills- dsie A. M. E. Church, who Friday last secured from Judge Cole a mandamus com- manding the trustees, who were keeping him from getting possession, to deliver to him the keys of the building, held services there at the usual hours Sunday, all of which were well attended. In the morning Mr. Gowens preached on “Christian Duty” and at night talked on various matters of interest connected with the affairs cf the church and congregation. He also an- nounced that there was a possibility that he would soon be transferred to another field of labor by Bishop Gaines, but so long as he remains pastor at Hillsdale he in- tended, he said, to do all in his power to promote unity and advance the prosperity of the church. It leaked out yesterday that Sergt. An- derson and Policeman Reagan of the Ana- costia substation Friday night visited in an official capacity several places in Ana- costia where it was alleged gambling was being carried on. In one of them a police- man, who, however, was not on ‘tuty at the time, was, it is s: found, and he seemed to he deeply interested in what was taking place. No arrests were made, but it is claimed that some citizens of Anacostia who were discovered there beat a very hasty retreat, and it is said that one gentleman attempted to get through the floor. Contractor Ward of Washington played four simultaneous games of chess Satur- day night in Anacostia with as many +om- petitors, viz., C. H. Welss, August Miller, Joseph Miller and Dr. J. A. Watson, all of whom are regarded as expert players, and beat them all. ———— HY. yILLE. Express train 510, Royal Biue, of #e Baltimore and Ohio railroad, whica aves Washington at 10 o'clock a.m., a@ruck and instantly killed an unknown colored man at College station yesterday merning, who was sitting on the east plat- form and leaning over the track. A col- ored man named Albert Johnson, who was evtting grass on the opposite side of the track, saw the man in the dangerous po- sitien when the train was approaching and called to him to get off the track, but no attention was paid to the warning. The ergineer blew the whistle three times, and still the man made no effort to move, and before Johnson could reach him he struck by the trains and knocked eternity. He was horribly mangied, into his skull being completely crushed, his brains and lim The engi ance from the and pieces of his arms Scatiered over the track stopped the train a short dis scene of the accident, and the mangled remains were removed from the track. The unfortunate man was so terribiy mu tilated that the remains had to be placed into a barrel in order to be removed to Bladensburg, where they were buried by Undertaker ch. One or two persons who saw the accident state that the man acted as if he was either asleep or drunk. An examination of the remnants of his clothes showed that he wore a dark coat and vest, light trousers, striped cotton shirt and straw hat. Justice Carr deemed an inquest unnecessary The board of commissioners met night at the office of Justice Carr. newly elected — commissione! fessrs. Smith, Aman and Emmons—were sworn iy and the board then reorganized by re- G ing Mr. F. H. Smith president and Mr. Wm. M. Lewin clerk. The following com- mittees were appointed: Road committee, Messrs. Aman, White and Emmons; light- ing committee, Messrs. Latimer and Eni- mons; health committee, Messrs. Latimer and Aman; audit committee, Messrs. White and Latimer. Quite a discussion took place over the construction of the provision of the new charter relating to the appoint- ment of assessors, as to whether the old board, consisting of three assessors, should hold over for a period of four years or a new board be appointed in its place. The question was brought up by Mr. H. O. Emmons, a member of the old board of assessors, who wanted Mr. Walker ap- pointed to fill the vacancy which was o cesioned by the former being elected as a commissioner. The question was postponed for further discussion. —— SANDY SPRING. last The The May meeting of the Horticultural Society took place at Stanmore with Mr. and Mrs. Henry H. Miller, Henry C. The need of the Memorial bridge to Arlington is becoming more and more a necessity, and the people of the county will do ail they can to urge Congress to pass a bill to that effect next session. The registration of voters has just closed for the year in the county, and shows an increase of voters for the year last past of over 300; this is the largest increase that has ever taken place in one year in the county.
