20 ON NEW PARTY LINES Voters in Kansas Inclined to Sever Old Ties. Free Coinage of Silver the Issue—The Organization Favoring It Will Carry the State. Special Correspondence of The Evening Star. TOPEKA, Kan., May 16, 1895. A new alignment of political parties in Kansas next year is very probable, and it is a question which is giving the leaders of the old parties much concern. It is not likely that Kansas will be the only state in the west where old party lines will be oblit- erated and the new silver party become the organization of many voters. The same unrest and dissatisfaction exists in a chain of states reaching from the Gulf of Mex. ico to Manitoba, and it includes Texas, Oklahoma, Kansas, Colcrado, Nebraska, the two Dakotas and the silver states of the northwest. Throughout this entire region the free coinage of silver at the ratio of 16 to 1 is the paramount issue. In none of the states mentioned is this question discussed more freely than In Kansas. This is be- cause Kansas always leads in every discus- sion, craze or movement which attacks the west. Party Fealty Hangs Looscly. The unrest among the people was never so manifest in Kansas. Party fealty is a loose-fitting garment. Men whose loyalty to party was never. questioned, or whose @evotion to the leaders was never doubted, are today political free lances, and they do not hesitate to say that the party whip can no longer round them up into the cor- ral for slaughter. These men, prominent republica democrats and populists, hav served notice on the leaders that they will no longer serve in the capacity of “hewers of wood and drawers of water.” Not a few have expressed themselves, but hun- dreds; so many, in fact, that party leaders are scared and look to next year’s battle with fear and trembling. The national C taped that does not declare for the free cOinage of silver cannot se- cure the electoral vote of this state. It matters not if the republicans adopt a straight-out free silver state platform, that party cannot win. State platforms’ are meaningless documents. Condition of the Populists. The populist party is the only political organization in the west standing for the free coinage of siiver. But that party is in disgrace in Kansas. It was intrusted with the state government, and the mis- takes and blunders were so numerous and flagrant that the people will never again have confidence in it. This being true, the new silver party will gather in all the populists and many republicans ard demo- crats who will not remain with the old parties because of their attitude in the east on the silver question. When this new alignment comes the peo- ple of Kansas will not be surprised to see ex-Senator John J. Ingalls in the van- guard. He has already announced his candidacy for the United States Senate to succeed Senator Peffer. Ingalls is ap- proaching sixty-five years, and if he ever again thgills the United States Senate with his matchless eloquence, he must secure the seat now occupied by Peffer. IN THE CHURCHES ‘Waugh M. E. Church and parsonage have been repainted and the wall in the rear of the pulpit is being torn down anda brick extension {s being built to accommodate a new pipe organ. The cost of the improve- ments is expected to be over $2,000, and will include, in addition to those just mention- ed, some minor repairs._ Officers of the Knights of St. Augustine, an organization connected with St. Augus- tine’s parish, have been elected, as follow: Robert E. Coats, commander; Wm. S. Lof- ten, first deputy commander; Frank Brown, second deputy commander; recording sec- retary, Jas. M. Brown; financial secretary, Willis J. Smith; assistant, Benj. At the semi-annual business meeting of the Vermont Avenue Christian Church three additional elders, making a board of ten, were elected as follows: Messrs. W. H. Schell, Andrew Wilson and Robert Balde! fon. The church has a membership of 614; the Sunday school, 317, and the Christian Endeavor Society, 105. During the last six inonths the church debt of over $1,000 has been paid. In a week or so a board of ten deaconesses will be selected. Last Wednesday evening the Epworth League was tendered a social at Trinity M.E. Church by the chapter connected with that church. A number of visitors were present from other chapters, and an en- joyable evening was spent. Next week the bi-monthly mass meeting of the Brotherhood of St. Andrew will take place at St. John’s Church, George- tewn. A successor is to be selected to cor- responding secretary, Henry C. Parkman. The July meeting is announced to be held in Trinity Parish Hall, 3d and Indiana avenue. Friday evening a week age an entertain- Ment was given at Ryland M. E. Last week the congregation of St. Mark's Lutheran Church held its annual business meeting and elected F. W Leonhardt elder and Cornelius Eckhardt and Austin Cooper deacons. The remaining members of the board of officers are Messrs. W. Larner, E. C. Bernheim and A. W. Noack. The report of the general secretary of the Lutheran Woman's Home and Foreign Mis- sionary Society presents some interesting statistics in regard to mission work. In all the world there are forty Lutheran for- eign missionary sccieties, that employ 1,000 missionaries and 400 native assistants at 700 stations, ‘The converted membership numbers 204,000, There are 60,400 pupils in 1,60 schools, The yearly outlay for all missions {s about $1,160,000, Cffices of the Calvary Christian En- deavor Society have been elected as fol- lows: President, Miss Anna J. Bell; vice president, Miles M. Shand; recording secre- tary, Miss Etta L. Hoskins, and treasurer, W. W. Everett. The membership of the society has reached a total of 16%, while the report of the treasurer showed that $270 has been expended during the past winter and spring by the society along the different lines of its work. The trustees of the Mount Pleasant Con- eregatit h have signed an agree- ment by which in a few days a site for a new church will become theirs. The lot is on Columbia road, 70 fe ‘om 14th and is 8) feet wid Jeep. At ing of the churc ty for the of considering the project almost sry one present contributed something, the individual amounts ranging from $0 to $%. About $4,000 in all was the total amount subscribed for the wo been or- itan M. E. Church, Taylor as superin- com- ‘ard Johnst May Camalier; second vice pres- son Moffatt; third vice president, Jchn DeMain; fourth vice president, Bert- ram Armstrong; recording secretary, Nellie corresponding secretary, Frances constitutional secretary, Maud Wagstaff, and treasurer, Florence Beiler. Epworth M. E. Church South is soon to in the building of a new church edifice, end by next winter the congregation expect to occupy it. Some seven or eight thou- sand dollars will be needed to defray the expense of bullding, and of thts amount over half has been raised, with good pros- pects of getting the remainder in a short time. A plan for the edifice has been selected, and in a week or so the comnulttee THE EVENING STAR, SATURDAY, MAY 18, 1895—TWENTY PAGES. on oe purchase of a lot will make its re- port. Rev. Dr. A. G. Rogers, pastor of the Church of Our Father, is preaching a series of Sunday morning sermons on “The Pilgrim's Progress.” A feature of the communion services of the First Congregational Church is the Practice of sending flowers, both potted and cut, to the church on that day by those who joined the church in the same month of previous years. It has been decided that the next meeting of the young people of the local Buptist churches will take place on the 3ist of this month in the Gay Street Church, Georgetown. An instructive program has been prepared for the occasion, and a large attendance is expected. At the meeting of the General Women’s Missionary Society (Lutheraa) at Williams- port, Pa., on the 13th of 1ext month, Mrs. W. H. Gotwald and Mrs. M. W. Hamma will be present as delegates. The Young Men's League of the Ver- mont Aveuue Christian Church presented Tuesday evening before the members of the congregation a mock representation of the “Midsummer Night’s Dream.’ Kendall Bapiist Church presents a very attractive appearance, both from its ex- terior and interior, since it has been thor- oughly renovated. The effect of moving into a larger and finer house of worship is decidedly apparent in the increase In the congregat The returns from the rainbow tea, given by the lad‘es of Calvary Baptist Church, are all in and it is announced that over five hundred dollars was cleared. __ Morday evening Dr. J. R. at Bloomington, I the dedication of the confederate monument at Oakwood ceme- 0, Memorial day, was discuss- ed at lergth. Many hot speeches were made in regard to the selection of the ho!- iday for such purpose. The resolution adopted deprecates such a disposition of Decoration day, and while the G. A. R. cannot presume to deny the right of indi- viduals to participate In the ceremonies, the G. A. R. organization as such can have nothing to do with it, adding that had any other day than the national memorial day been chosen for the dedication no notice of the atfair would have been taken by the Grand Army. ——__ cee.
