10 SUBURBAN NEWS ROCKVILLE. A mission will be conducted at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, this place, by Revs. Wm. Brick and Francis Parr, C. S. 8. R., begin- nirg Sunday, the 19th instant, and ending the following Sunday. There will be both morning-and evening services each day. Sunday, 26th instant, the same fathers will open a mission at. St. John’s Church, Fcrest Glen, which will also last one week. Messrs. Wm. B. Mobley, Frank L. Bell and Howard Plummer have been elected commissioners of the town of Laytonsville, this county. . The clerk of the circuit court for this county has issued réarriage licenses to the following parties: Frank S. Baxter and Mary B. Clug, Thomas Sullivan and Marian A. Perry, Percy EB. Gallant and Lucy E. Smith. Dr. John H. R, Wolfe, at one time a well- known citizen of this county, died Tuesday = his home near Glenwood, Howard coun- y- At a meeting of the board of directors of the Monocacy cemetery Association Tues- day resolutions of respect to the memory of the late Isaac Young were adopted. Mr. Young was for many years a director, sec- retary and treasurer of the association. Mr. John Hilliary Bogley has announced himself a candidate for county commis- sioner, for the fourth collection district, subject to the decision of the democratic primaries. Mr. Bogley is a member of the present board, and has the reputation of being an efficient officer. The ladies of the M. E. Church South at Dickerson station will hold a strawberry and ice cream festival in the grove near the church at that place on the 34 of June. The proceeds will be devoted to the benefit of the Sunday school. Mr. Spencer C. Jones of Rockville will address the children. The festival will commence at 10 a.m. and con- tinue during the day. Mr. James K. Dove, a well-known citizen of the county, died Monday at his home near Travilah, aged sixty years. His fun- eral, which took place Wednesday, was largely attended. - The Athletic base ball team left here Wednesday morning for Hagerstown, where @ game was played that evening between them and the crack club of that town, re- sulting in a score of 7 to 5 in favor of the Hagerstown boys. Thursday another game was played between the same clubs, re- sulting in the defeat of Rockville, the score standing 19 to 1. When the club left here two of their most efficient players remain- ed at home. They will return Friday night, and Saturday afternoon will play the Georgetown College team at Fair Park. The annual convention of the County Sunday School Association, of which Mr. B. H. Warner is president, will be held at Kensington the evening of the 14th, and all day of the bith of June. All the Sun- day schools of the association will be rep- resented. Lutheran services will be held in the Presbyterian Church at this place Sunday next, at 3 p.m. Mr. Chas. W. Hogan, one of the recent graduates of the National College of Phar- macy, was a former citizen of this place. The cold and wet weather of the past week has retarded the growth of crops in ‘his secticn,. and will cause a shortage in the yield to some extent. Fruit is reported as yet uninjured, with prospects of a large erep. —_— » BROOKLAND. A fine array of talent was presented in the Brookland Town Hall Wednesday evening by Brookland Lodge, I. O. O. F., No. 25. Noble Grand C. H. Childs acted as stage manager, and presented the Ivy Leafs Pandolin, Banjo and Guitar Club, under the leadership of Mr. W. S. Crown, who furnished a number of choice musical selections. Messrs. Bert Foster and De- witt Croissant provided much amusement with a little comedy, resulting from “Get- ting Left” at Brookland station. Mr. Meig Parham gave some well-received comic songs and speciaities. Little Miss Elsie Worth performed a graceful rustic dance. Messrs. Weber and Veihmeyer of the Mont- rose Mandolin Club rendered a pleasing mandolin duet, and Mr. W. M. Clark gave a remarkable exhibition of his whistling imitations of bird songs and trills. Prof. John Connors delighted all present with a most creditable demonstration of his pow- ers as a ventriloquist. A series of comic recitations by Mr. J. Bayne and one by Mr. Foster were given. The gems of the even- ing were a banjo and guitar duet by Messrs. Crown and Veihmeyer, and a song, “The Mysterious Organist,” by Mr. Cathell of Metropolis Lodge, who in response to a decided encore sang “There Are Moments When One Wants to be Alone.” Mr. Frazier gave a Dutch recitation in good style, and then the floor was cleared for dancing, and coffee, sandwiches and cake were served in the lodge room, while a chorus sang enlivening songs of the olden time. R. E. L. Thompson, H. E. Burgess and J. L. Whiteside were the committee in charge of the entertainment, and are to be ecngratulated upon securing such musical and dramatic attractions. Ground was broken Wednesday afternoon for the new Methodist Episcopal Church on Frankfort street. The Church of Our Savior ts almost finished, and will be dedi- cated this month or early in June. Major. and Mrs. Green Clay Goodloe moved this week from Washington to Woodreve. Dr. Leonard Stejneger expects to spend the coming summer in St. Peterburg, Rus- sia, and Mrs. Stejneger will spend some time in Madison, Wis. - The drama to be presented this evening in the Brookland Hall, on the occasion of the testimonial to Mrs. Erin Phelps, is “A Sisterly Scheme, with Mr. Hally, Miss Levy, Miss Collins and Mrs. McIntire in the cast, while Mrs. McIntire will give “Perdita” as a dramatic recitation. ————— TAKOMA PARK. Takoma Hall, brilliantly illuminated, the interior handsomely decorated with cut flowers, plants and bunting, was the scene on Tuesday evening of a large and repre- sentative gathering of prominent Masons, representing the various District lodges, the occasion being the visitation of the officers of the Grand Lodge, for the pur- post of instituting Takoma Lodge, No. 29, under the charter granted at the recent seml-an@ual convocation of that body, and installing the officers recently elected. Among officers present from the Grand Lodge were M. W. G. M., D. G. Dixon; R. W. D. G. M., Geo. W. Baird; R. W. S. G. W., Matthew ‘Trimble; R. W. J. G W. Saml. C. Palmer; R. W. G. S., W. R. Singleton, who ccmplimented in the highest terms the work done by Takoma Lodge while under dispensation, an adjournment was had to the banquet rooms, where, under direction of Caterer Freund, with a trained corps of assitants, ample justice was done to the good things provided, with Marshal T. F. Miller as host and toast master, who, in one of his brightest veins of wit and hu- mor, ted this portion of the program. Toasts were offered and remarks made by the following: Judge Miller, M. W. E., in the chapel Thursday night, was a financial and social success, the results to be appropriated toward defraying the ex- perses of the convention of '#, to be held in Washington, derived from the sale of ice cream, cake, lemonade, useful and fancy articles, ete. Miss Carol Summy is still confined to the house, the severe cough of the past ten days not having yielded to treatment. The many friends of Mr. M. F. Halleck will be glad to learn that some improve- ment has been noted in his condition since his return to Takoma, a week since. The test of the chemical and water fire apparatus announced in The Star for yes- terday was postponed on account of the inclement weather, and will take place to- day between the hours of 5 and 7, on the grounds east of the log cabin. The weekly Methodist prayer meeting was held Monday evening at the residence of Mr. B. W. King, with Mr. L. M. Mooers as leader. The topic of the day of the Y. P. S. C. E. was handled Sunday by Mr. F. E. Skin- ner in a most interesting manner. ————— ANACOSTIA, Memorial day will be the second anniver- sary of the turning of the first earth in the construction of Garden Memorial Church, Rev. J. B. North, pastor, and due notice of the event will be taken by the members of the church and congregation. The church was so named in memory of two brothers— Messrs. Alexander and William Garden— who during their lifetime were among the most earnest Presbyterians of the nejghbor- hood? When the church was opened, for worship Rev. Joseph B. North was called to the pastorate, where he has since re- mained, and during his administration’ the growth of the mémbership has been phe- uomenal. During the last fifteen months alone there has been an increase in that direction of more than 250 per cent, the Sabbath school has increased %0 per cent and the Christian Endeavor Societies 35 per cent. Previous to the completion of the new edifice the congregation for two years worshiped at Haines’ Hall, on Harrison street. The original members of the church were Rev. M. P. and Mrs. Snell, the former of whom has charge of two churches in Virginia, to whom he preaches regularly without pecuniary compensation; Mr. Carl- ton E. Snell, Miss Cora Snell, Mr. and Mrs. A. B. Garden, Mrs. Garden, sr., Mr. C. O. Bohrer, Mrs. E. V. Dodge, Miss E. Doughty, Mr. and Mrs. J. H. Simpson, Mr. Paul Simpson, Messrs. Davenport, rector, was held last night at the rectory, on Maple avenue, and plans made for holding a lawn party and having an excursion when the weather becomes suitable for such pleasures. The snow plow of the Washington and Anacostia Railroad Company was put into use yesterday for cleaning the dirt from the rails on the Congressional cemetery line, and that branch of the road, which has been closed since last fall, will be opened to the public in a day or two.
