HAVANA, May 16.—A special cablegram received here today says that on Monday last there was severe fighting in the n borhood of Jobito, near Guantanamo. engagement lasted from 5 o'clock in the morning until 5 o'clock in the afternoon and resulted in a brilliant victory for the Spanish troops. A detachment of 400 soldiers attacked and fought bravely against 2,000 insur- gents, who were led by Gomez, the two Maceos, Rabi and Cartagena. The lieuten- ant colonel who led the Spanish force or- dered his soldiers to open tire as the rebels advanced and fell furiously upon the troops. The latter were taken by surprise, and were thrown into confusion. The two bodies of troops then united and made a combined attack upon the rebels, who were ccmpelled to retire with a loss of 400 dead and wounded. Arnold of Chicago was arrested there yesierday, charged with using the mails for fraudulent purposes. He has made a practice of inserting matrimonial adver- tisements In various papers, representing himself as a woman. Then he would in- duce his male correspondent to send him money “with which to buy a trousseau.” te authorities have quite a collection of letters of Arnold’s reputed dupes. They are all_addressed to either Miss Clara Le Clare, Miss Cora Williams or Miss Jennie May Lamont. The only evidence of any money secured by Arnold's epistolary ef- forts is a plaintive appeal from M. 0. Thomas of Bryantville, Mass., who writes to the inspector to “Please locate Miss Jennie May Lamont.” Thomas says that he corresponded with Miss Lamont all’ of last winter and engaged himself to marry her. He sent her $2) to buy a wedding trousseau and a gold band ring to seal the matrimonial compact. When Thomas’ letter was shown to him Arnold laughed and remarked, “That guy got out a mar- riage license for us. I sold his gold ring for $3. —--——-see. Episcopal Diocese of Virginian. Preparing the Report of the Com- mittee of the General Assembly. The committe of conference with t theological seminaries of the Presbyterian &ereral assembly met at Pittsburg Tues- day to prepare its report for presentation to the general assembiy, which meets to- day. : Among the members present were Rev. Dr. Mutchmore, moderator; Rev. Dr. Wm. ©. Young of Kentucky, Rev. Dr. Willis G. Craig of Chicago, Hon. T. McDougall of Cincinnati, Rev. Dr. Richard S. Holmes of Pittsburg, Judge Bonner of Indiana and others, The committee, it is said, what seminaries have accepted th will report ir plan— Omaha, Danville, Dubuque, Newark and certain’ theological departments. They will also report that Princeton, McCormick and Allegheny practically adopt the prin- ciples of the pian. In brief, the commit- tee will report progress, and will most probably be continued, although a motion will be made to discharge it, whicn will throw the discussion of the main question into the assembly. A co-related question of even more knot- ty character is as to the position the as- sembly will take with regard to licensing the students of Union Seminary, New York, which has seceded from the as- sembly. The large presbytery of New Yerk overtures the assembly on this sub- ject, which will involve all the issues of the heresy cases in the past three as- semblies. The report of the standing committee on the theological seminaries will report on the whole subject at the peril of frequent- ly getting on delicate ground. The com- mittee to reorzanize Lene Seminary will also report on the same line, so that theo- logical seminaries, one way and another, will bob up all through the assembly, which will be known in history as the “Theologi- cal Seminary Ass2mbly.” —se- Interesting Foreign Notes.
