SUBURBAN NEWS ANACOSTL It Is understood that an arrangement has been made in the case of Mrs. Sarah Mock- abee of Anacostia, who was recently ar- rested by Officer Farquhar for firing a pis- tol into a group of four persons, one of whom was her husband, Samuel Mockabee, by which the latter is to withdraw the charge of assault with intent to kill against his wife, on condition that the latter shall enter a suit for divorce on the ground of desertion, he not having, it is said, lived with Mrs. Mockabee for a long time. Branson for being en- gaged in an affray with Philip Snyder, in Havenner’s blacksmith shop, on Good Hope Hill. Hutchinson admitted the charge and said that had it not been for the inter- vention of the officer the consequences to Snyder would probably have been very serious. Mr. H. A. Griswold is making arrange- ments to have a number of alleys graded between Maple avenue and Arthur street, and Chestnut and High streets, in Gris- wold’s addition to Anacostia. Rev. F. M. This gentleman is here in response to an invitation from the officers of the church. Mr. and Mrs. B. avenue, with their son Jesse, have returned from a few days’ stay in Washington, where they were called by the illness and death of Mr. Smith’s sister. ‘The cold rains of the past few days have created considerable anxiety in the minds of residents with regard as to its effect upon the small frutts and vegetables, which are in condition to be injured by even a light frost. Every precaution in the way of covering at night, etc., is being used. Miss Minnette ‘Thompson is one of the late arrivals in the neighborhood, and is located aj Mrs. Galen Green's. A Takomaite has suggested that each man in the suburbs of Washington, who F. Smith of Chestnut | | in Liber 1534, is the possessor of a garden, should plant one pint of navy beans (it is not too late), the yield to be given to the committee on charities, for use for soups in soup houses for next winter. The strength and nourish- ment in this vegetable make it valuable for such purpose. It requires little or no cultivation. How many will respond? Miss Lizzie Winter is visiting Miss Stella Bennett at her home on Magnolia avenue. Masters Davenport and Dupont Guerry of Macon, Ga., have returned to their home after a two weeks’ visit with Mr. and Mrs. Homer Guerry of Hoily avenue, much de- lighted with their trip to Washington and vicinity. ——__. HERNDON. The closing lecture of the Black Friar course was given Friday by Maj. J. S. Duf- fie; subject, “The Rights and Duties of the American Citizen.” It was treated in a very able @nd interesting manner. The gratification of the audience was frequent- ly manifested by hearty applause. After the close of the lecture the president, Mr. W. H. W. Moran, in a few well-chosen words, expressed the gratification of the association in the success of their efforts and thanks to the community for their lib- eral patronage. Sunday morning Dr. Mason of the Con- gregational Church gave an interesting dis- course on “The Mammon of Unrighteous- ness,” Luke 16:0. The unfavorable weath- er operated against a full attendance, which was unfortunate for those who were ab- sent, as they missed an excellent sermon. Theré was a good delegation from this branch of the ‘Endeavorers” to the meet- ing of the sublocal union at Greenwood M. E. Church, Daysvilie, Sunday afternoon. The church was well filled and the exer- cises were very interesting and impressive. Miss Grace Hays of Washington is mak- ing a few weel visit with Mrs. Martha Johnson, At the annual meeting of the Chestnut Grove Cemetery Association the trustees were at:thorized to have a substantial wire fence placed on the south and east sides of their grounds, and the trustees are about making a contract with Mr. Nelson Potter to erect the fence. It is expected that a number of lots will be taken in the new grounds as soon as the fence is completed, those in the older part having been nearly all disposed of. ‘The public scho@s will close on the 23d of this month. Herndon branch of the Washington Na- tienal Building and Loan Association is in @ prospercus condition. Additions to the membership are frequently being made. >—_—_ KENSINGTON.
