1 THE EVENING STAR, TUESDAY, MAY 14, 1895-SIXTEEN PAGES. SUBURBAN NEWS ANACOSTIA. A special meeting of the Hillsdale Citi- zens’ Association was held last night at the residence of Mr.Washington Butler, on Howard avenue. A large number of mem- bers were present and much enthusiasm was manifested. President John S. George presided, and in the absence of Secretary Robert L. Pendleton Assistant Secretary Henry Sayles recorded the proceedings. The business transacted related entirely to taking steps toward securing better mail faciiities for the people of Hillsdale, and several very interesting speeches on the subject were made. All the speakers were of the opinion that the time has ar- rived to ask the proper officials at the Post Office Department in Washington for an improved service, and while they said it would have been in every way desirable to have co-operated with the Anacostia Citi- zens’ Association in an effort to get free delivery for both Anacostia and Hillsdale, yet, as the Anacostia Association has seen proper to put on record its opposition to the idea, the only thing left for the Hills- dale Association to do in the matter is to ablishment of a post office . The committee of which Mr. airman and which arge were re- fon embodying ssocia- tion on the subject, and to arrange for the per to the second as- vr Seneral,in whose charge are the fourth-class post offices, such as the propesed office at Hillsdale, if it shall ask for the in Hillsd: James L Jehnson is ¢ has had ject In quested ea pe the views of the mewesers of the presentation of the sistant postmas' will be. In the afternoon Mr. J. B. Cranfil of Texas, who was once a candidate for Vice President on the prohi- bition ticket, and Rev. C. A. Fulton of Bal- timore addressed a mass meeting of Chris- tians, and at night the pastor, Rev. Hugh T. Stevenson, and Rev. John Purser of Vir- ginia addressed members of the Junior Or- der of American Mechanics, Daughters of Liberty and several other patriotic orders who were present. Rev. Mr. given notice would take the building dart: and the doors again locked against tim. Inquiry among vari- ous church officials brought forth the in- formation that Benjamin Butler, the sex- ton of the church, fiad lighted the building g, but as the preacher earlier in the even did not arrive promptly at 8 o'clock, the hour set for the service to begin, he had extinguishe@ the lamps and_ closed the church against ail comers. & made a diligent search for Mr. failed to fiud him. Mr. Ovelton, the ex-pastor, received, it is said, a tele- gram from the bishop in reply to a com- ication from the trustees on the sub- >t, directing him to “hold the fort” until further ad he bishop, and yester- day Rev. Mr. Gowens received, through Rev. Dr. Armstrong, secretary of the de- partment of finance, a telegram from the same ecclesiastical authority, telling him to accept the keys of the church if they should be tendered to him by the trustees. Instead, however, of presenting Mr. Gow- ens with the keys, as desired by him, they handed him a letter, which was to the ef- fect that his resignation of the pastorate would be in every way agreeable to them and the congregation. To this Mr. Gowens replied that he had been appointed pastor of the church for a year, and proposed to keep the place during that time, unless or- dered to relinquish his charge by the bishop. : ——— FALLS CHURCH. Mr. Ball of Virginia is expected to preach there tonight. Both ministers are delegates to the Southern Baptist convention, now in session in a large and enthusiastic audience. “Sir Simon Simple” was rendered in a manner calculated to remove any doubt as to the success of the engagement. The credit of the entertainment reflected on the merit of the players rather than the scenic display. Mr. R. Dorsey Trundle played the part of Sir Simon Simple in a very satisfactory manner. Mr. Alexander Carlisle took the pert of Mr. Daniel Murgatroyd, while Fred- erick Grantley and Mr. Mold were repre- sented by Messrs. Z. M. Easton and W. 8. English. The center of attraction was Felicia Craven, portrayed by Mrs. E. E. Meem, who was attended by her maid, Miss Ida Clenn. Mr. H. W. Glad Hill was very good as Capt. Marker. Miss Willie Cooms showed clever work and graceful acting in her rendition of Mrs. Merton. After the entertainment the players were entertained at supper by Mrs. Wm. B. Miller. Hattie Ohm gave a well received recitation, and Stanley Marean a Piano selection A number of new mem- bers were added to the legion. Harold Marean resigned his position as secretary and Raymond Depue was elected to fill his place. The pulpit of the Queenstown Baptist Church was filled Sunday morning by Rev. Dr. Kirtley of Kentucky, who preached an excellent sermon from the fifteenth chapter of Exodus, second verse. In the evening Rev. Mr. Kirkendall of Lancaster, Ky., gave a much appreciated address. The choir rendered choice music, both morn- ing and evening. Mr, Charles Sickles, who has been in Sea- brooke, Md., for some time attending to some recently purchased real estate, spent Sunday in his Brookland home. Rey. W. H. Chapman held the very close attention of the Brookland M. Pupils of Prof. Montgomery will give a number of fine fancy dances on this occasion. on THE MONKEY IN MAN. A Queer Collection of Simian Attri- butes. From the Nineteenth Century. To see the monkey in man you have only to study the faces, bodies and habits of babies. Such is the theme of a very in- teresting article by S. S. Buchanan. The acdons of children are, Indeed, he says, like “ancient monuments of” prehistoric times. The human infant is an interesting object of scientific research, and even a cross baby should be calmly contemplated by the philosophic mind.” Here are a dozen of the numerous illustrations which Mr. Buchanan gives to show how survivals of our simian ancestry may be found by any nursery philosopher: Monkeys are snub-nosed (simian). So are babies in the early days of their existence. Monkeys have pouch-like cheeks. To judge from ecclesiastical monuments this characteristic is supposed to be especially angelic. It is really monkey-like. Baby cheeks are the vestiges of cheek pouches, possessed for storing away food, as in Cercopithecus, a monkey in which this habit of storing may be observed in the zoological gardens, if visitors feed it. At the base of the vertebral column ba- bies have a deep cirealar depression. This is the mark of the monkey's tail. Babies, as Dr. Robinson has shown, have superior arm power and very short legs. So have monkeys. Babies, in catching hold of anything, don’t use thumbs, but clasp it between the fingers and palm. This is the action of monkeys in going from bough to bough in tropical forests. A baby can move any of its toes inde- pendently and it can move them one from another, so as to make a V between any of them. As it grows older it loses this power and also the power of turning its ankle, but that it has such a power over its mus- cles when young points to ancestors who used their feet more than their hands as organs for picking up small objects, and who relied.on arms and hands for sup- porting their bodies. Babies _ go to sleep on their stomachs, with their limbs curled up under them— a survival from our four-footed ancestors. Babies are rocked to sleep—an imitation of the swaying to and fro of the branches monkey ancestors lived. Even our nursery ditties (“Lullaby Baby on the ‘Tree Top") point back to the arboreal ages. The fruit stealing instinct is a survival from monkeydom. Children are fond of picking at anything loose—monkeys pick off the bark from trees in order to search for insects, Children are very fond of rolling. This points to the time when our ancestors had hairy bodies tenanted by parasites and allayed the irritation by rolling, and shows the persistence of ancient traits. ——__—__+e-+— ZUNIS FEAR THE RAINBOW. They Think It is a Delfied Form of the Measuring Worm. the Chicago Times-Herald, Capt. Trevitt W. Okey of Los Angeles, Cal. for many years stationed in Arizona and New Mexico with the regular army, told about the myths and superstitions of the Zuni Indians to a group of friends at a Broadway hotel the other evening. "In the Zuni mind,” said he, “the rainbow has ever been a deified antmal, having the attributes of a human being and also the body and some of the functions of a meas- uring worm. Obviously the striped back and arched attitude of the measuring worm, its sudden appearance and disappearance among the leaves of the plants which it in- habits, are the analogies upon which this personification is basell. As the measuring worm consumes the herbage of the plants and ceuses them to dry up, so the rainbow, which appears only after the rain, is sup- posed by the simple-minded Indian to cause a cessation of rain, and consequently to be the originator of droughts, under the in- fluence of ich plants wither away, as they do under the ravages of the measuring worms. “It will be seen that the visible phenome- non called the ra:nbow gets by analogy the personality of the measuring worm, while from the worm in turn the rainbow gets its function as a god. Of this the cessation of the rain on the appearance of the rainbow is adduced as procf. The fading of the ‘s is attributed to the rainbow, which, suming their imperceptible existences, thus derives his brilliant coloring, just as it is believed that the measuring worm gets yellow and red stripes from the ts and flowers which it devours. he influence of this upon the Zuni mind is to place the rainbow among the malig- ant gods. It is frequently painted on war nields and made a demon to be propitiated, nunaed. When a rainbow appears in ni Indians and those of bes turn their backs upon iful sight and covertly imprecate ndly spirit. —se+— Heavy Arrivals of Immigrants.
