10 SS SS THE EVENING STAR, 1895—TWELVE PAGES. WEDNESDAY, MAY 8, SUBURBAN NEWS ANACOSTIA. @a Considerable excitement occurred about 10 o’clock last night on Harrison street, Anacostia, which was caused, as is alleged, by Mrs. Sarah Mockabee firing a shot from @ loaded revolver point blank at a group, consisting of Mary Branson, Elizabeth Branson, George M. Caspar dni Samuel Mockabee, the latter of whom is the hus- band of the woman who is charged with firing the weapon. At the time of the af- fair the four persons last named were Standing directly in front of the residence of Policeman Branson, while Mrs. Mocka- bee was in the yard of her home near by. It is said the shooting was the outcome of domestic difficulties in the Mockabee fam- fly. How all the members of the party missed getting hit by the ball from Mrs. Mockabee’s pistol is regarded as a mystery. It is said that a warrant will be sworn out today for Mrs. Mockabee’s arrest. Bishop Gaines did not leave Atlanta on Monday, as was expected, having deferred his departure from home until yesterday, and the officer of Hillsdale A. M. E. Church who represented the church at the recent session of the Baltimore conference, where the trouble in which the church 1s now involved originated, said last night that nothing official is known as to the bishop's intentions in regard to the restora- tion of the late pastor, Mr. Ovelton, to the charge, as has been requested by the con- gregation. It is expected, he further said, that Bishop Gaines will reach Washington today on his way to Atlantic City, but whether he will stop off in Washington long enough to settle the Hillsdale matter no one seems to know. A number of the members of the Hilis- dale Church have said in conversation that should the decision of Bishop Gaines be adverse to the congregation and Mr. Ovel- ton, they will donate to the latter the same amount of money they have been in the habit of giving to the church, but will not contribute a penny to the support of another minister. So far as known, Mr. Gowens, the new pastor of the church, who announced that he would hold a meeting there last aight, was not in Hillsdale at all during yesterday or last night. The ladies and gentlemen who are to ren. der a comedy called “Our Awful Aunt” at Masonic Hall, Anacostia, tonight for the benefit of St. Teresa's Church, held a full dress rehearsal at the hall last night. The business transacted was only that relating to the good of the order, but Was especially interesttng. More applica- tions for admission to Electa have lately been received than have been anticipated, although the initiation fee was recently increased considerably. Rev. Dr. F. J. Peck, a former pastor of Campbell A. M. E. Church, Hillsdale, who has been visiting the members of his old congregation for several days, yesterday deft for h!s home at St. Louis, Mo.
