RATCLIFFE, DARR & CO., AUCTTONEERS. ‘The Woman's Relief Corps, auxiliary to John A. Logan Post, No. 7, G. A. R., of Anacostia held an unusually Interesting meeting at Masonic Hall last night. The following department officers of the W. R. C. of the District were present: President, Mrs. A. M. Hamilton; inspector, Mra, A. A. Peck; chaplain, Mrs. Mary M. North; na- tional aid, Mrs. Anderson; also Mrs. Susie Rose, Mrs. Kibbey, Mrs. J. M. Layton, Miss Norton and Miss Tompxins of Wash- ington. Mrs. North, from the committee having charge of the matter, submitted a report, which was adopted, in reference to the observance by the Woman's Rellef Corps of Anacostia of Memorial day. It is considered likely that both the W. R. C. and John A. Logan Post will take part in the exercises of the day at Arlington and that another G. A. R. post will be detailed by Department Commander Anderson for duty on that occasion at Anacostia. Dur- ing last night’s meeting the Balch, or flag salute, was effectively given by the pupils of the eighth grade of Van Buren School. A warrant was Issued late yesterday afternoon by Justice Carroll W. Smith of Anacostia for the arrest of one of the best known farmers of Prince George's county, Maryland, in the vicinity of Washington, and who does a large amount of business in Washington, on the charge of vagrancy. ‘The document was sworn out by the man wife, who told a pitiful story to the magis- trate and at the Anacostia substation of her troubles. She claimed that her hus- band spent most of his time around District bar rooms, and on returning home in- variably abused her. Mr. and Mrs. F. A. Linger will reside at Colonial Beach during the approaching warm season. A special meeting of Electa Chapter, Or- der of the Eastern Star, will be held to- night at Masonic Hall. Justice Carroll W. Smith of Anacostia this morning issued his first warrant under the Edmunds law as applied to the District of Columbia. The warrant was issued at the request of Martha Somerville of Ana- costia, who made oath that her husband 1s living In Mllict relations with Catharine West, a cousin of Mrs. Somerville. The latter also alleged that her husband refuses to contribute anything to her support. Somerville is supposed to be living in the southwestern part of Washington. Se = HYATTSVILLE. ‘The result of the election for town com- missioners, which occurred here yesterday, was as follows: Francis H. Smith, 12 Howard O. Emmons, 114; Joseph A. Aman, 79; George’ N. Walker, 74; F. A. Holden, 4; Dr. A. M. Buck, 1; L. H. Campbell, 1. There were 138 votes cast in all, which was the largest ballot ever polled in this town. The main interest in the election was centered in the contest between Messrs, Aman and Walker? There were two tickets in the fleld, one bearing the names of Messrs. Smith, Emmons and Walker, the nominees of the convention, and the other the names of Smith, Em- mons ané Aman. An unusual amount of electioneering was done at the polls by the friends of the different candidates. Unfortunately, the result of this election seems to have engendered a spirit of un- leasantness between the advocates of the Valker and Aman factions, but it is be- lieved that this feeling will soon disap- ar and harmony again be restored. Mr. Valker, the defeated candidate, appeared in his usual genial mood after the elec- tion, and stated to The Star representa- tive that he had been offered the nomina- tion by a few of the leaders, but had de- clined it, and had only accepted it when given him by the people at the conven- tion, without any solicitation on his part, and had expected the votes of those who might see fit to support him, but that a combination of all the politicians and their influence was used to secure his defeat. He further stated that he felt proud of the result, as it showed that he had more friends than any one or two of the politi- cal workers of the town. The board of ccmmissioners held a special meeting last evening, at which an official count was made of the vote. The new commissioners will be duly qualified and the president of the board elected at a meeting which will be held on the first Monday in June. The board will then consist of Messrs. Smith, Emmons, Aman, White and Latimer. The committee appointed by tke Citl- zens’ Improvement Association, tonsisting of Messrs. E. L. Latimer, Arthur Carr and John W. Turner, with a number of citizens of this town, witnessed a satis- factory test of the Handly automatic fire extinguisher made by the agents of that company on the Tinker lot last evening. —_—-.—_—_ LANGDON.
