10 THE EVENING STAR, MONDAY,, MAY 6, 1895-TWELVE PAGES. SUBURBAN NEWS ANACOSTIA, William, alias “Dol” Jones, of Hillsdale, Was arrested yesterday on warrants sworn out by Justice Carrell W. Smith of Ana- costia, charging him with assaulting and also threatening to kill Henry Matthews, ir. The difficulty occurred about a girl, and during the fracas Jones, It }s alleged, drew a pistol and fired at Matthews, but fortunately did uot hit him. Jones per- sisted, it is sald, in trying to kill Matthews, but was prevented by two men, who held him while Matthews made his escape. It is understood that a third charge of carrying @ concealed weapon will also be laid against Jones. Considerable excitement was caused in Anacosti® about 4 o'clock yesterday after- noon by Mr. Thomas Collins of No. 717 I Street, Southeast Washington, who demand- ed a bull dog, which William Simms of Anacostia had in his possession, and the refusal of the latter to give up the ani- mal. Collins claimed that the dog had been stolen from him several months ago, while ms insisted that he had bought the animal. As_Simms continued to refuse to surrender the dog, Collins, it is sald, struck Simms several blows with a cane. Acting Sergeant Anderson here appeared on the scene and conducted both parties to the Anacostia substation, where the mat- ter was setiled by Collins paying Simms a dollar for the trouble the latter had had in the matter and offering satisfactory ex- Planations for having caned him. An immense crowd of colored people as- sembled on the bank of the Eastern branch, a short distance from the navy yard bridge, and on the bridge, yester- day morning to witness the bapt! of forty-two converts, thirty-five of whom came from Washington, and seven from Garfield. The exercises were conducted by Rev. Jesse S. Taylor, pastor of the Baptist Church at Garfield, sisted by two colored ministers from W: ington. The candi- dates were all females, and were attired in loose white gowns, with white cloths around the head. There were three sepa- rate services, at each of which a sermon and other exercises were conducted by one of the ministers. Mr. J. W. Latimer, postmaster and mer- chant at Silver Hill, Md., yesterday buried his youngest child, making four members of his family who have died within a few months. The first to be taken were his brother's wife and child, next his mother, and Friday his little sen. Mr. Latimer has also been very unfortunate in other Tespects, as twice during the past two weeks his store and the post office were broken into and robbed, the loss amount- ing to over $200. Mr. S. A. Lewis of Oxon Hill, Md., this morning, at the Anacostia substation, iden- tifled as his property the two Brahma hens which Officer Robey found in the posses- sion of Herbert Wright at an early hour on Saturday morning. Wright is now in jail awaiting a hearifig. Quite a serious affray took place in Hills- dale Saturday night, when, during a dis- pute concerning a woman, Robert Berry, it is alleged, cut Henry Simms in the neck with a knife, inflicting a painful but not necessarily dangerous wound. Berry left the vicinity immediately after the occur- rence, and thus far has not been appre- hended. A delegation of citizens of Anacostia ex- pect to go before the District Commission- ers today and ask for the promotion of Acting Sergeant W. T. Anderson to the vacancy caused by the death of Sergt. Kerby. The Christian Endeavor meeting at Con- gress Heights last night was led by Mrs. Howarth. Vice President Thomas E. Reardon will act as president of St. Teresa's branch of the Catholic Knights of America at Ana- costia until November next, when the elec- tion to choose a successor to the late presi- dent, Charles Kerby, will take place. Unusual interest is being manifested In the municipal election, which takes place toda active canvass has been made ire town by the friends of the randidates for commissioners, and s has been engendered between what are termed as the “regulars” and the “polte! in consequence of certain re- ports that have been circuiated for the purpose of influencing voters. The friends of Mr. Joseph A. Aman feel confident of his election, while the friends of Messrs. seo. N. Walker and H. O. Emmons are equally as confident of the suceess of their candidates. The town was In a state of excitement all day yesterday, and whis- pered conversations were being held at every corner. The commissioners are not compensated for their services, but from the manner in which the candidates are endeavoring to secure the coveted pi they seem to think there is more glory in- being a town father than there is in being governor of the state. Mr. F. A. Holden, who presided over the convention which nominated the regular ticket, cre- ated quite a surprise among the “regulars” last Saturday by bolting that convention and coming out on an opposition ticket as a candidate, which also bore the names of Messrs. Aman and Smith. He created a still greater surprise yesterday, after having carefuily inspected the new char- ter, by publicly arnouncing to his friends, that he had discovered that under the pro- visions of that charter he was not eligible as a commissioner, owing to the fact that he was not a freeholder, and therefore re- quested them not to vote for him. There are several tickets in the field and the great fight will be made to defeat Messrs. Em- mons and Walker, the regular nominees. Mr. Aman has a Strong following. There are about 130 votes in the town, and at least 90 of those will be cast. Walker's friends claim that their man will receive between sixty and sixty-five votes. The polls will be open today from 2 to 6 o'clock p.m. The judges of ele¢tion are Dr. Alfred a Wells, John W. Turner and F, A. Hol- jen. An intelligent and representative gather- ing of farmers of Prince George’s county was present last Saturday at the Maryland Agricultural College by special invitation of Captain R. W. Silvester, president of that institution. The Vansville Farmers’ Ciub and the Patuxent Planters’ Club were the farmers’ organizations ,represented. Col. Powell reported that as the result of his interview with the officials of the Baltimore and Ohio railroad the latter had decided to put on extra freight trains for the accommodation of truck farmers be- tween Washington and Baltimore. These trains will commence running about June 1, one leaving Baltimore at 1:55 a.m., ar- riving at Washingtcn 4:50 a.m., the other leaving at 9:10 p.m. and arriving at Balti- more at 12 o'clock midnight. At the suggestion of Col. Powell it was determined to try to unite the counties of Howard, Prince George's, Anne Arundel, Charles, St. Mary’s and Calvert in form- ing an immigration bureau, with a view of bringing intending settlers in direct contact with persons having lands to sell. A committee, composed of W. S. Powell, J. D. Loweree and D. M. Nesbit, was ap- pointed to consider this subject and con- fer with representatives of other counties above mentioned, and, if possible, inaugu- rate the work, which will be entirely void of profit, but for the purpose of inducing immigration to lower and central Maryland. The next regular meeting of the club will be held at the residence of Dr, Richard S. Hill at Upper Marlboro’, on Wednesday, June 5, but by unanimous consent it was determined to hold a special meeting at “Llangollen,” the farm of Col. W. S. Pow- ell, near Annapolis junction, on Saturday, May 18, for the purpose of hearing an ad- dress from President Slivester of the Mary- land Agricuitural College on ‘Co-operation Between Scientific and Practical Agricul- ture,” to which meeting the farmers of the ‘surrounding neighborhood will be in- vited to attend. At a meeting of the Epworth League, held at the Methodist Episcopal Chur2h South last Friday night, the following officers were elected for the ensuing year: Geo. W. Graves, president; Mrs. Mark- ward, first vice president; Miss Grace Stands, second vice president; Prof. Wal- lace, third vice president; Mrs. A. H. Ja- cobs, secretary; Mrs. J. A.‘ Hasson, treas- urer. A social meeting of the league will be held next Friday night at the residence of Mr. John Smith, at which the rewly- elected officers will be installed. Miss Haddie Thompson, assisted by her Sunday school schclars, gave an Old Foiks’ concert and colonial tea party last Friday night at the Presbyterian Church, for the benefit of that church. The performers appeared In appropriate costumes, and a large audience was present. The Question Being Considered by the Secretary of the Treasury. Secretary Carlisle is considering the ques- tion of the reassessment of duties import- ed between August 1 and August 28, 1894. ‘The circuit court of New York decided last February that the tariff law went into ef- fect August 1, the date named therein, in- stead of August 28, the date on which it became a law. The decision was carried to the court of appeals of New York, but that court declined to render an opinion, on the ground that it was a question of so much importance that it should go to the Supreme Court of the United States, and it is now pending there. ‘The estimate of the revenues which should have been col- lected under this decision between August 1 and August 2S, by the collector at New York, is about and the enforce- ment of the dec vill involve the re- fund of something over a million. As by ny reassessment must be made within a year, and as there cannot be a final de- cision by the Supreme Court until the fall term, the Secretary is considering the ques- tion ‘of re: sment, in order to protect the interests of the government. If noth- ing were done within the year the govern- ment would be estopped from collecting the revenue that should have been collect- ed between August 1 and August 28, while it might be forced to make the refund un- der the provisions of law by which a pro- test of an importer keeps the claim alive. fae oe eee Naval Orders, The following officers are detached from the Naval Academy and ordered to the Monongehela on the 15th: Commander W. own, Lieut.
