10 THE EVENING STAR, FRIDAY, MAY 3, 1895-TWELVE PAGES. THE GUARANTEE ACCEPTED Salvador Becomes Responsible for the Pay- ment by Nicaragua. British Troops Expected to Evacuate Corinto Tomorrow, Accordin; to Dr. Guzman. Oficial confirmation has been received ‘here of the report that Great Britain has accepted the guarantee made by Salvador for the payment by Nicaragia of the $75,- 000 indemnity demanded by Great Britain and that upon ratification of the agrec- ment by Nicaragua the British naval forces will be withdrawn from Corinto entirely. A ceble message to this effect was received by Acting Secretary Uhl late yesterday afternoon, aud he wisely concluded to make it public. It is now believed that the diffi- culty between the two countries has passed the crisis, with favorable prospects for a peaceful settlement of the questions at is- sue on an honorable basis. Nicaragua 1s confidently expected to confirm the ar- rangement concluded by the Salvadoran minister at London, in which event Ad- miral Stephenson's fleet will leave Corinto at once. Repaying a Favor. The guarantee by Salvador of Nicaragua’s indebtedness, It Is said, is simply repayment of the favor extended to Salvador by Nicaragua et the time of the Ezeta incl- dent, when Dr. Guzman, the Nicaraguan minister at Washington, took up the case of Salvador by Instractions of his own goverment and worked so hard to se- cure the extradition of the refugee to Sal- vader. In addition to this consideration, based on gratitude, the Salvadvrians are Supposed to be influenced in espousing the Nicaraguan cause by a feeling of appre- hension at the presence of British troops on Central American soil. It is quite cer- tain that all of the countries of Cen- tral America have been deeply impress- ed with some such fear. It ts felt here that the Nicaraguan incident may perhaps be the direct means of bringing about again the long-expected revival of the union of Central American republics, the small republics now existing having been brought to a realization of their in- ability to protect themselves in a conflict with any considerable powe Other Claims to Be Settled. Although it may be safely assumed that the acute phase of the Nicaraguan incident has passed, supposing that there should be no hostile collision before the formal orders have reached the commanders on each side, there are yet some matters to be adjusted before the incident can be regarded as en- tirely closed. After the settlement of the ‘smart money” claim, on account of the treatment of Hatch, a commission must be Selected and proceed to adjudicate the claims of other British subjects, not offi- clals, who were expelled from Bluetlelds at the time of the outbreak last summer; and, if this commission assesses damages against Nicaragua on this score, there may be some grumbling before the account is set- Dr. Guzman Gratified. Dr. Guzman, the Nicaraguan minister, ts very much gratified with the result. “There 4s no doubt,” he said, “that the affair ts at an end, as no circumstances can now intervene to prevent the execution of the agreement. The suggestion that Nicaragua is yet to accept is a mere formality, as she has already accepted, and, in fact, urged the agreement through her representatives. But such further assurances as are neces- sary will be given. The payment of the money is beyond question. Nicaragua’s word is sufficient, but, in addition, there is the assurance of Sclvador. There is only one more step, and that is for the British ships to sail from Corinto. I expect that will occur tomorrow.” = ——_-—-e.+__ AS GUESTS OF DETROIT. Distinguished Gentlemen Discuss Leading Topics. Upward of 350 leading business men of Detroit, with their guests of the evening, enjoyed the banquet given in, that city last night in celebration of the completion and dedication of the new Detroit chamber of commerce. After upward cf an hour's en- Joyment of the banquet, the company listen- ed to several able discussions of subjects of interest to the commercial world by representatives of leading business and financial terests of the country. The guests were welcomed by Rufus W. Gil- lette, president of the Detroit chamber of commerce. Ex-Senator Thomas W. Palm- er presided as toastmaster. The first toast was responded to by ex- Congressman Maybury of Detroit. His subject was ‘‘No north, no south, no east, no west, but the commercial supremacy of @ great nation.” “Commerce of the inland seas” was re- sponded to by Harvey D. Goulder, chief counsel of the Lake Carriers’ Association. After citing the progress of the great lake traffic, as compared with that of other waterways, he declared that the Detroit chamber of commerce was looked to as the concentrating energy of Michigan in behalf of the lake traiflic, in which Michigan is so especially interested. Mr. Chauncey M. Depew was then intro- duced and spoke on the union of states— “The bond of commerce is their mutual in- dependence and enduring prosperity.” “The effect upon eommerce of pooling hy transportation lines” was responded to by George R. Blanchard, commissioner of the Central Traflic Association. Mr. 0. D. Ashley, president of the Wa. bash railroad, responded to ‘Commerc: and transportation, one and inseparable. Mr. James H. Eckels, controller of the currency, responded to the toast “Cur- rency. Letters of regret were read from Presi- dent Cleveland, ex-President Harrison and Senator Burrows. Loyal Women’s Tea Pinte Social. The Legion of Loyal Women will give another of their pleasant socials at their headquarters, 419 10th ,street northwest, this evening, under te management of the house and musfe committees, Mrs. Dr. Pomeroy and Mrs. D. W. Houghton, chairmen. The cup and saucer social, given scme time since, was not only a most en- foyable affair, but at its close the legion found itself the possessor of over eighty handsome pleces of china, and_ several pieces of silver, but one want brings an- cther, so many of the ladies have decided to make this a tea plate social—each to bring a china plate as a donation to the legion china closet, which has become a matter of much pride and satisfaction. —_—_ Geological Exhibit at Atlanta. Dr. David T. Day, who has charge of the mineral exhibit to be made by the ge& logical survey at the Atlanta exposition, has been spending the week in Atlanta making arrangements for the exhibit. He will return Saturday in time to join the National Geographic Society on its excur- sion to Fredericksburg, and Monday will resume work on the Atlanta exhibit from this end of the line. Dr. Day's organiza- tion of the geological exhibit will make in many respects the best that has been placed in any exposition. There will be a competent staff of tanis on the ground to arrange and place the exhibit. Mr. Weeks of Pittsburg will have charge of the ceal exhibit, and Mr. King of Tiffany & Co. that of gems. ———+-- e-__ Railways in Egypt. In the course of a report to the State De- partmert on the railways of Egypt United States Consul General Penfield, at Cairo, makes the surprising statement that that country, in proportion to population, has more railway mileage and better service Hungary, Spain or Portugal, it is all government property with the exception of a few short lines. Ancient Cairo is to have a trolley Iine next year, and Alexandria ts expected to follow suit. Bids have been made for a trolley line from Cairo to the Pyramids, ten miles, and @ Frenchman has seriously applied for per- mission to build a funicular railway to the top of the Great Pyramid, though this re- quest has not been considered. ———+-2-+_____ The first annual assembly of the Supreme Council, Uniform Rank, Knights of Pythias of the world, closed Wednesday at In- dianapolis with a reception and banquet at tke Grand Hotel.
