Valent, who surrendered fifty Spanish soldiers to the Cuban rebels, and who was afterward captured and turned over to the military outhorities at Havana, was, after trial by court-martial, sentenced to be shot. This sentence was carried out in the fortress of Cabana. Captain General de Champos, in a proc- lamation, said it was the first time in the History of his military life that he had known a Spanish officer to be executed for cowardice. Lieut. Gallego’s execution was conducted with the usual military ceremonies, and he personally gave the order for the firing squad to shoot. —_——__+e+____ Sons of the American Revolution, The sixth annual national congress of the Sons of the American Revolution opened in the Old South Church in Boston yester- day. Gen. Horace Porter, president gen- eral of the society, was in the chair. There were over one hundred delegates present, representing thirty-one state societies. The report of Hegistrar General A. Howard Clark shows the membership of the society to be 1,286 in thirty-one state sections. A committee of thirteen will place markers on the graves of the signers of the Declara- tion of Independence. The congress will meet next at St. Louis. Gen. Porter was re-elected president general. Other officers elected were: Gen. J. C. Breckinridge, Washington; Col. Thomas M. Anderson, Vancouver Barracks, Washington; Edwin 8. Barrett; Concord, Mass.; John White- ead, Morristown, N. Eighty thousand workmen assembled in Parliament Square in Vienna yesterday afternoon and demanded universal suffrage. After feaving the square the crowd march- ed through the streets. When the proces- sion passed the university the students cheered for socialism, and the workingmen replied with cheers for science. Other out- breaks occurred in various parts of the city during the day, resulting in a large number of arrests, but no one was serious- ly hurt. Forty-seven meetings of workingmen were held in various parts of the city, at which resolutions were: passed demanding universal suffrage, and an eight-hour work- ing day. Ther no disorder. eee The Debt Statement. The total debt of the United States, less cash in the treasury, is $917,839,903, an in- crease for the month of April of $9,109,857. The cash in the treasury is classified as follows: Gold, $139,998,153; silver, $510,813,- 574; paper, $119,833,579; bonds, disbursing officer's balances, etc., $16,797,027, making total of $787,442,335, against which there fre liabilities outstanding amounting to 9606,624,419, leaving a cash balance of $180,- 817,016, a decrease of $7,100,000 during the month.
