10 THE EVENING STAR, FRIDAY, APRIL 26, 1895-TWELVE PAGES. SUBURBAN NEWS ANACOSTIA, Electa Chapter, Order of the Eastern Star, gave a delightful hop and” reception last night at Masonic Hall. The entire building was leased for the occasion, and foore than 500 perscrs, many of them from Washington, Brigktwood and other places were present. The stage on the first floor, where the dancing took place, was taste- fully decorated with flowers’ and potted plants and the supper tables in the hall, where the meetings of the chapter are held, were decorated with blooming flowers, uniquely set in jardiniers. The feature of the evening was some fancy dancing by. @ number of small children. Most of the gentlemen were in evening dress, and the costumes of the ladius were very elegant. The committees having charge of the af- fair were: Reception: Mr. J. T. Campbell, chairman; and the following officers of the chapter: Mrs. Julia A. Allen, worthy ma- tron; Mr. C. W. Okey, worthy patron; Mrs. J. W. Trusheim, associate matron; Miss Carrie Golden, secretary; Miss Sophia Kuhn, surer; Miss Elsa Shields, conductress; Mamie Fisker, tant conductress; ozier; Ruth, Miss Rosa Mrs. R. Hinwood; Martha, Mrs. Garden, sentinel, Mr. J. : arrangements, Mrs. E. V. Dedge; chairman, Mrs. C. Okey, Mrs. Mary ‘Tavender, Mrs. Mina Smith, Mrs. Fanny Frazier, Mrs. Carrie King, Mrs. Charles James, Miss Katie Huhn, Mrs.-W. Campbell, Miss Anna Hartley, Messrs. G. P. Bohrer, J. D. Gessford, RK. J. Shields; supper, Mrs. Oke: chairman, Mrs. Allen, Mrs. Minnix, Mrs. Tavender, Mrs. _War- wick, Mrs. Harrison, Mrs. Mamie Fisher and Mrs. Smith; dancing, Messrs. Charles James and KR. J. Shields. The-music was by Tavender’s Band of Washington. By the kindness of President Griswold of the Washington and Anocostia Railroad Com- pany a number of special cars of that line ‘were run up to 2 o'clock this morning, to accommodate the visitors from Washing- ton. So many important matters have been arranged for pr: mtation at the meeting tonight at Haines’ Hall of ihe Anacostia Citizens’ Association that it goes without ing that the proceedings will be of a interesting character. Among the questions, which it is expected will be brought up, ure these of a new substation, either in Anacostia or Hillsdale, the struc- ture used for the purpose at present being old and suitable in every particular. Re ports of various committees on matters which were referred to them at the last meeting of the association, and some new business, chief among which will likely be the proposition to amend the constitution of the association, so that women may be admited to mem! ship, as was stated in yesterday's Star, would probably be done if there shall be afforded an opportunity. ‘The pupils of Van Buren school, Ana- costia, have begun to practice the singing of patriotic songs, which they wiil render during the exercises on Memorial day, at the cemetery near St. Elizabeth's Asylum. Ee KENSINGTON. The charming home of Mr. G. V. N. Og- den was tastefully decorated with a pro- fusion of apple, peach and cherry blos- soms, Tuesday evening last, and thrown open to a large and enthusiastic gathering, who met to do honor to Rev. James T. Marshall of the Warner Memorial Presby- tertan Church, the occasion being the first anniversary of his pastorate. Mr. William M. Terrell introduced Mr. Marion Dorian, who, in a fitting way, voiced the senti- ments of the congregation toward its pas- tor, and of the spiritual strength they had acquired under his able leadership. Mr. Marshall responded feelingly, alluding to the bond of sympathy which had susiain- ed and cheered him during the physical trials he had lately undergone. He hoped, with returning vigor, to render, under the Master, a greater measure of usefulness. Mr. Bb. H. Warner took occasion to say that among all his endeavors none lay closer to his heart, or promised richer re- turns in good citizenship in this world and the one to come, than the little church planted here. He would especially say to the many good people who are outside of the church lines that there was an uplift- ing power in a concerted religious move- ment which no individual effort could secure, and he especially urged non-believ- ers to bring themselves in close contact with some congregation. Rev. Park P. Flournoy, pastor of the Bethesda Presby- terian Chureh South, who was the first to gather the nucleus of what is now such a large congregation, spoke of his pleasure at the abundant harvest from small plant- ings, and hoped that the present growth would continue to bless the pastor. Rev. Thomas D. Lev pastor of the Es- sex and Manassas Episcopal Church of Virginia, spoke of the close bond which Christian principles were cementing be- tween the various shades of religious be- liefs, and of the good fellowship among men, which true service of the Lord brings about. Prof. J. H. Langille, lately pastor of a Buffalo Baptist church, said there were two salient points in the religious movement of today. One was the practical commingling of @ll spiritual forces in building up the character of the young as shown in the Christian Endeavor and like societies. The other was the helpful char- ity and kindness that goes into the homes of the poor and afflicted. Mr. H. K. Simp- son, on behalf of the workers of the church, said in regard to the civilizing in- fluence of mankind, the ladies must not be forgotten. A large proportion in num- bers and a still larger proportion in good- ness of every church were of the gentler sex, and to this church especially have they been the mainstay and inspiration. At the conclusion of the addresses the fol- lowing musical program was rendered: J. T. Marshall, banjo; G. V. N. Og- bones; Newman G. Little, guitar, and Eleanor Ogden, pianist, rendered a unique selection; voca! duet, Mrs. Arthur Harrison and Mr. E. W. Wilcox; piano solo, Miss Louise Helen; reading, “Mars Chan,” Dr. William L. Lewis; vocal solo, Mrs. J. King Marks; vocal solo, Mr. Marian Dor- fan, and vocal solo, Miss Annie Wilson. At the close of the program cream and cake were served. Mrs. J. S. Brundage of Tiffin, Ohio, and Mrs. Mary Bickford of Washington are the guests of Mrs. J. Howard Fishback. ~ Mrs. W. W. Eldridge gave a luncheon Thursday in honor of Mrs. Robert E. Con- stant. —_—_—_ HYATTSVILLE. An interesting meeting of the Bas Bleu Literary Society was held Wednesday after- noon at “Melrose.” Readings were given by Misses Perry, Whiting and Hopkins; in- strumental music was rendered by Misses Briscoe, Bowen, Shaffer and Dent. An original essay wads read by Miss Mary Carr. Original stories were read by Misses Marguerite Carr, Lelia Aman, Elsie Jones, Hazel Wallace and Edith Walbridge. The prize for the hest essay was awarded to Miss Daisy Lester. Quotations were given fro:a Mrs. Browning. A mock trial for the benefit of the Col- ored Methodist Church of Bladensburg was given at that church Wednesday evening be- fore a large and appreciative audience. Jus- tice Carter acted as judge, and Messrs. Chas. E. Bowles and ‘Doc’ Laneaster, colored, appeared as the respective counsels for the prosecution and defense. A jury composed of colored men was selected. Spencer Chase, colored, represented the defendant, who was tried on the charge of house- breaking and acquitted. The testimony of the witnesses was very amusing. es FALLS CHURCH. At a meeting of the congregation of the Presbyterian Church Wednesday night Messrs. Geo. B. Ives and Geo. W. Mankin were elected trustees for three years. Miss Clara Jewell, who has been spend- Ing the winter in Washington while her new residence on the Sherwood subdivision was being built, is now occupying the same. Mr. W. N. Lynch has contracted with Mr. A. Davis, jr., for the brick work of his new residence on the lot recently purchased from Mr. E. I. Crump. Dr. French Lugenbeel of Lewinsville was taken to Fairfax C. H. Jacobs, preparatory to his be- ing sent to the lunatic asylum at Staun- He was adjudged insane and sent to yylum once before, but was thought to have been cured and was discharged and returned home, but recently the dis- ease again developed and much to the re- Bret of his friends he has again to be con- fined in the asylum.
