ALEXANDRIA AFFAIRS. of General Interest to All Classes. ‘Whittle Hall at the Theological Seminary was packed with a large crowd of the friends of the students, who had come to hear an extempore preaching contest by the members of the senior class. Some seven or eight of them entered the contest, and all acquitted themselves especialiy well. Mr. John Scott ef Richmond won the prizé. Profs. Grammar and Wallace, Messrs. Buckner and Lee of the middie class and Laird of the junior class acted as Judges. i Liquor Licenses Granted. In the corporation court yesterday, Judge J. K. M. Local Notes ’ Janney Car Coupler Co. The annual meeting of the Janney Car Coupling Company was held yesterday, when the following officers were re-elected: E. H. Janney, president; R. E. Janney, vice president; Arthur Herbert, treasurer; K. Kemper, secretary; E. S. Leadbeater, A. Herbert, C. J. Travelli, J. T. Burke, R. E. Janney and R. F. Knox, directors. The President submitted his annual report. The Police Court. In the police court this morning Mayor Strauss presided and disposed of the fol- lowing cases: Willis Wood, colored, charg- ed with lunacy, was held for further ex- amination. Lucy Green, colored, charged with cutting George Jackson, was fined $10 or sixty days in the work house. Moy Yen, charged with assaulting Thomas Kimbali with a pistol, fined $5. Daniel Robinson, charged with breaking and entering on the Washington Southern ratlway near St. Asaph Junction, was held for the county authorities. George Jackson, for assault-, ing Lucy Green, was fined $5. Notes. About 80,000 herring arrived at Fishtown this morning. The steamer Macalester passed here last aight from Baltimore, where she had been thoroughly overhauled ard put in shape for the excursion season. Mr. Walter Hoberts will shortly com- mence the erection of a handsome residence on his farm near this city. —<——__— THE CONGREGATIONALISTS, Closing Session of the Mecting at Baltimore. The Congregaticnal Association of New Jersey at Baltimore adjourned its annual session last night, to meet next year in Newark, N. J. President Gilman of Johns Hopkins University gave greeting from the university to the association. It was voted to devote special attention on Whit- sunday to the question of chureh unity by prayers and services. Delegates were elected to the national council. Mrs. John W. Foster, wife of the ex-Secretary of State, addressed a waman’s meeting in the Sunday school room of the church. Her topic was “The Women of the Ori ent.” Miss Cook of Washington atso ad- dressed the meeting. a MINISTER DE LOME ARRIVES. Spain’s Representative in America Reaches New York. The Spanish steamer Panama arrived at New York quarantine at 8:30 last night, after a rapid though uneventful run of three days and fifteen hours from Havana. Among the passengers on board was M. Dupuy de Lome, the Spanish minister to ‘Washington. The minister, when seen last evening, sald: “The excitement caused by the troubles in Cuba is dying out. I am confident that they will be soon set- tled. Captain General Martinez Campos will arrive in Havana in a few days after his return from the affected districis, where he is visiting, to suppress any dis- orders that»may arise. The alleged insur- rection is confined chiefly to negroes, the whites not taking an active part. I am Positive, having a knowledge of his ca- pabilities, that the captain general will be prompt and energetic. He has a perfect knowledge of Cuban affairs, making him the best man for the situatio! The minister will remain in ‘w York for several days to await the arrival of his family from Europe. ——.__. Officers as Well as Cadets. ‘The recent order issued at the Naval Academy defining the regulation salute, which was construed as prohibiting cadets taking off their caps to ladies, has been ex- tended to the officers at the Naval Acad- emy. The order, of course, does not men- tion the ladies, but goes on’ to say what a regulation saiute consists of, to whom it shall be given, and prohibits any other form of salute.
