CAMPBELL CARRINGTON ‘Attorney-at-Law, Webster Law bullding, 505 D, st. n.w., Washing- ton, D.C. Residence, 800 L nw. a2, ANACOSTIA, The meeting of Mineola Tribe, No. 14, Improved Order of Red Men at Masonio Hall last night, was made Interesting by the advancement of several recently adopt- ed members to the degrees of hunter and chief, respectively. Past Chief H. W. Eno, chairman of the committee of arrange- ments, reported that the arrangements for the annual excursion of the tribe were nearly completed. An exhibition was given last night at St. Elizabeth’s Asylum by the senior gymnastic class of the Young Men’s Christian Asso- ciation of Washington. The program com- prised dumb bell drill, buck class exercise, wrestling, parallel bars class exercise, club swinging, German horse, spring-board jumping and tumbling. The performances were well executed and elicited great ap- plause. The Junior Department of the Epworth League of the Anacostia M. E. Church, numbering about thirty persons, were given a reception last night at the residence of Mr. J. E. Powell, president of the league, at “Rosecroft,” Prince George’s county, Md. Miss Cora Snell of Anacostia conducted the meeting at the southeastern branch of the Central Union Mission, 8th street near Virginia avenue southeast, Washington, last night. A meeting of the committee on streets, roads and bridges of the Hillsdale Citizens’ Association was held last night. Capt. George D. Graham presided, and steps were taken to request the District Commission- ers to have the names of the streets and avenues posted at the proper places in Hillsdale, it being at present impossible for strangers to distinguish one street or avenue from another when searching for location. The committee on schools, Mr. John H. Dale, chairman, also met and de- termined to agitate the substitution of a large brick building in Hillsdale for the two frame school houses now in use, one of which is in bad condition and in an unhealthy location. Mrs. Williamson of Congress Heights, who has been very ill, is recovering. Mr. Charles Williamson of Congress Heights has removed to Anacostia. ——.——__ The New Cap. Herewith is. presented a picture of the new cap for the army, a cap that seems to be a much more sensible piece of headgear than the one which it will displace after July 1, as to officers, and after January 1, 1896, for enlisted men. Those among army officers who see no necessity for a change criticise the new cap as being devoid of what they term “military smartness,” but none of them has as yet attempted to as- sail the cap as a practical piece of wearing apparel. Among the the present headgear the most conspicuous one is that it will stay on the head without being held; another advantage is the slop- ing visor, which affords grateful protection to the eyes. Specifications of both new cap and the new blouse were printed fully in The Star more than a week ago. At an early date they will doubtless reappear in general or+ ders to the Guard. There will be no ar bitrary date fixed on which the change shall take place; it will simply be an- nounced that when officers find it necessary to purchase a new cap or blouse after July 1 they will be required to have those essentials conform to the regulations. EDs Washington Boys at Cornell. Among the most prominent athletes at Cornell this year are two from this city who are taking an active part in boating interests. They are G. P. Dyer and J. H. Taussig. Dyer is a senior and is rowing No. 7 in the first boat. This is his third season at the oar, and he was also the act- ing captain of the foot ball team through the early part of last season. Taussig is a sophomore and is filling a place in the sec- ond boat. Both are regarded as sure of their places. The make-up of the base ball team has been practically decided upon, except in one or gwo positions, for which the candi- dates are very evenly matched. Manager Young has completed the schedule of games, with two or three exceptions. It is expected that one of the vacant dates will be filled by a game with Harvard. As it now stands the schedule is as follows: April 18, Toronto League team at Percy Field; April 23, Elmira League team at Percy Field: April 25, Trinity at Percy Field; April 27, Princeton at Scranton, Pa.; April 29, Princeton at Percy Field; May 4, University of Michigan at Percy Field; May 9, University of Virginia at Percy Field; May 18, University of Pennsylvania at Percy Field; May 21, Crescent Athletic Club of Toronto at. Percy Field; May 23, Princeton at Princeton; May 25, University of Pennsylvania at Philadelphia; May 29, Oberlin College at Oberlin, Ohio; May 30, University of Michigan at Detroit; June 1, Columbia College at Percy Field; June 3, Georgetown University at Percy Field; June 5, Cuban Giants at Percy Field; June 15, Orange Athletic Club at Orange, N. J. June 17, Brown University at Percy Field June 18, College of the City of New York at Percy Field. But the athletes who are attracting most attention just now, both here and in the outside world, are the Cornell oarsmen. The turning out of three crews this year, one to go to Henley, and another to row against Columbia and Pennsylvania on this side of the Atlantic, besides a freshman crew, will tax Cornell’s resources to the utmost. ———— A Corean Diplomat Arrested.
