NEWM ‘Manager. PROF. KEELER’S DISCOVERY. That Saturn’s Ring is Made Up of Satellites. A Pittsburg dispatch sent recently says: Prof. Keeler of the Allegheny Observatory is being flooded with letters of inquiry from observatories all over the country in re- gard to his discovery that the ring of Saturn is made up of small satellites. He has completed his calculations as to the relative movements of the various bodies composing the ring, and he is preparing an illustrated article on his discovery. In this article he will say that the movement of the bodies in the ring decreases gradually from the inner edge according to Kepler's third law. He will also state that his dis- covery demonstrates the great value of Prof. John A. Brashear’s spectroscope in determining the movements of heavenly bodies, and that many more discoveries similar to his are likely to follow as the result of the use of this instrument. Prof. Langley, who was for several years associated with Prof. Keeler in the Alle- gheny observatory, after perusing the above dispatch, said: “I can say but little now of this subject of astronomical inquiry; but anything coming from Prof. Keeler I should accept as true. He is a man of the highest attainments, and he is not likely to permit an announcement that would not hold out. Anything coming directly from him, although it might be wholly unexpected, I should be inclined at once to believe. ——_- —-ee0 -_____ Asks for Liberty. A petition for a writ of habeas corpus has been filed by J. Weed Corey against Sister Mary Martin, superintendent of the House of Good Shepherd, 36th and T streets. The petitioner states that the pétition is filed on behalf of Anne Rothmond, a young girl of twenty, who is an inmate of the institution. Mr. Corey says that the girl is so closely confined, imprisoned and restrain- ed of her liberty that she is unable to be seen for the purpose of signing the petition. He also states that she is never allowed to converse with or see any of her friends, except in the immediate presence of her keeper or through the bars in her prison. It is also stated that she once escaped from the institution, but was forcibly carried back, and is now ardently desirous of her liberty. The petition was presented to Judge Bradley, who directed that the writ issue, returnable before him at 2 o'clock tomor- row. ———— The Fish Senso! During the past two days the fishermen down the river have had good weather, and the result fs that good catches have been made. Shad and herring, as well other fish, are very plentiful and cheap. There are now being received more than 400,000 herring, while the daily shipments of shad from the lower Potomac reach as high as 150,000. The spring seine haulers have also ca.ght many perch and rock fish of unusually fine quality, many of the rock fish being very large. Almost every day rock fish weighing from fifty to ninety pounds are caught. The first lot of new Boston mackerel reached the market this week and are selling at 35 cents each. This is the best season for packing shad and herring, so the dealers say, and es- pecially herring, for the catch now, as well as earlier in the.season, is large and the fish better than they will be later on. The herring now being caught are what are known as branch herring and are larger than most of the herring later in the sea- son. ——— His Bond Forfeited.
