The Easter services and decorations at the various churches in Anacostia were of @ character that will long be remembered. At Garden Memorial Church Rev. J. B. North, pastor, preached on “The Resur- rection and the Part Woman Took in the Scenes at the Tomb,” and at night the ser- mon was from the theme, “Enthusiastic Christianity.” The Christian Endeavor meeting was led by Mrs. M. M. North, and the subject was, “Risen With Christ; From What?" At the Methodist Episcopal Church, Rev. James McLaren, pastor, the feature of the day's exercises was the specially prepared Easter service by the Sunday School Unton, entitled “He is Risen.” The piece was in- tensely interesting, and parts of it were participated in by the entire audience. Rev. T. B. Hughes, pastor of St. Theresa’s Catholic Church, and Rev. W. G. Daven- pert, rector of Emmanuel Protestant Epis- copal Church, each preached an impressive discourse, the subject of which was the joyous event which transpired more than 1,800 years ago, and in both the music was of an unusually high order. At the Anacostia Baptist Church Rev. Hugh T. Stevenson, pastor, preached in the morning on the theme, “Life's Contest—the True Conquest,” and at night on “Our Substitute.” The services at East Washington Heights Baptist Church were conducted by Rev. George E, T. Stevenson, pastor, and were appropriate to the day. , There was no more attentive audience arywher? in the District yesterday than that which assembled in the chapel at St. Elizabeth’s Asylum at 3 p.m., nearly 500 patients and their attendants being present. The sermcn was by Archdeacon Williams, rector of Christ P. E. Church, Washington, and the music was rendered by a full band, with organ accompaniment. Mr. George M. Casper was musical director and Prof. E. T. Davis organist. the Hillsdale A. M. E. The services Church were also of a noteworthy char- 2cter, and were conducted by the pastor, Rev. F. M. Ovelton. The music was reu- dered by a select choir, and was very fine. Some old-time and well-known tunes were also announced, which the congregation united with the cho'r in singing. Miss Lulu Marr of Avalon Terrace, who has been visiting friends in Baltimore for scme time past, has returned home. Miss Belle Goodwin of Onville, Stafford ecunty, Va., is the guest of her sister, Mrs. Eugene Tkcrnton of Jackson street. The funeral of Mr. Patrick Edelen, a well-known carpenter of Hillsdale, who died Friday last, after an iliness of one dey, with spasms, took place this morning fiom St. Theresa's Roman Catholic Church, Anacostia, Services were conducted by Rev. T. B. Hughes. The interment was made in Muunt Olivet cemetery. ——.__ TAAMOMA PARK. The “Baster services in the various churches were attractive and well attend- ed. The 11 o'clock service in the Presby- terian Church consisted of a musical pro- gram by the choir, under direction of its former leader, Mr. B. B. Cushman, with Mrs. Morris Bien, organist, followed by a typical Easter sermon by the pastor, Rev. Arthur Little, from Phillipians, 2d, 8th and Oth verses. Mr. Little referred brietly to his approachipg departure, after @ pleasant and happy two years’ pastorate. Trinity P. E. Church celebrated the com- munion service at 11 o'clock, with Rev. Dr. Smedes, assistant rector, officiating. The music was rendered by the choir, as- sisted by the Takoma Orchestra, with fine effect. The altar decorations of plants and flowers, furnished and arranged by the la- dies of the church, tent additional beauty and solemnity to the service. The 8 o'clock service was conducted by the pastor, Rev. H, Allan Griflith, at which the ordinance of baptism was administered. The Methodist service at 4 o'clock con- sisted of the regular service, appropriate to the Easter season, with sermon by the pastor, Rev. R. M. Moore. The ladies of the congregation of the. Presbyterian Church will give a farewell reception to Rev. and Mrs. Arthur Little tonight at the residence of Mr. and Mrs. §. S. Shedd, on Oak avenue. A general in- vitation is extended. Mr. and Mrs. Little leave on Tuesday for their new home in La Grange, Ill. A birthday surprise party was given Miss Mabel Finch at her home on Elm avenue on Thursday evening, when a pleasant evering was spent with games, music, vo- cal and instrumental, followed by a bounti- fully supplied refreshment table. Mr. and Mrs. B. B. Cushman, with Miss Florence Cushman, were guests Sunday of Mayor and Mrs. 8. S. Shedd. Mr. and Mrs. B. F. Gilbert, with their family, are again residents of Takoma, hav- ing leased the residence of Mr. Theo. Frie- bus, jr., in North Takoma. Mr. Thomas S. Waters of Montgomery county has leased for six months, and ts now in possession, with his family, of the Haynes residence, on Magnolia avenue. The sale of the Garrett cottage on Oak avenue to Mr. W. B. Douglas of Wash- ington and that of Mr. Yoon Pike of North ‘Takoma to Mrs. J. R. Lewis are events of the past week. Mrs. Lewis will not re- move to Takoma until autumn. The monthly cour.cil meeting, held last week, resulted in the decision to purchase a fire apparatus as recommended by the committee, to consist of combined chem- ical and water engine, hook and ladder and hose reel. Before final action it was de- cided to attend in a body the test on the 1ith instant at Gaithersburg of the engine purchased by that town. Takoma Lodge, No. 24, I. O. O. F., will give its first annual ball in Takoma Hall, on the 16th instant, under auspices of a committee of which Mr. H. Elbert Warren is chairman. Miss Bertie Page will leave Tuesday for Omaha, Neb., for a mronth’s visit, after which she will go to Denver, Col., for a few weeks’ stay with relatives. The weekly Methodist prayer meeting has been postponed until Tuesday night, when it will be held at the residence of Mr. B. W. King,corner Maple and Carroll avenues. Mr. Norman Brainard is still suffering from the effects of a recent severe attack of grip. Miss Maud Watkins is also a vic- tim to this malady, having been confined to the house for the past two weeks. Mr. and Mrs. A. L. Watson and Miss Maggie Watson of Oneida, N. Y., have been guests of relatives here over Easter and leave tomorrow for a week’s stay at Old Point, from which place they will go to Boston before returning to their home. es BRIGHTWOOD. A well-attended and quite interesting meeting of the Hamline prayer conference was held Friday night at the home of Mrs. J. McElwee, on Flint street, Brightwood Park. Much interest was manifested in the discussion of the subject, “Faith,” both by the members and the visitors present from Washington and Takoma. The next meet- ing will convene at Mrs. Sands’, on Flint street. Mrs. William Cox of Zanesville, Ohio, while en route to New Jersey, is stopping over for a few days here with the family of her son, Mr. W._ V. Cox. Mr. and Mrs. Caarles Prickitt of Menten- chen, N. J., are here, visiting their parents, ae ane Mrs. John L. Norris, on the “A’ road. At the regular meeting of Strausburg Lodge, No. 24, F. A. A. M., last week, to- gether with other business, the Mark de- gree was conferrei. A large delegation of visitors from the Takoma lodge was pres- ent to witness the work of the order. The work of building an addition to the Masons’ Hall is now under way, and the excavating preparatory to the laying of the foundation is nearly completed. ‘The funeral of Mrs. B. D. Carpenter took place today from her late residence, corner Des Moines street, Brightwood Park. Mrs. Carpenter was in her seventy-third year, and was one of the earliest residents of this community. She was a lady of the most lovable and estimable qualities, and the loss to ‘the bereaved family is much de- plored. Miss Nannie Nalley, who is visiting rela- tives at Chillum, Md., and has been there for two weeks, is much improved by the change, ond will remain for a while longer. At the business meeting of the Christian Endeavor Society held on Thursday night at Emory Chapel, and presided over by Mr. Theo. Thomas, in the absence of Miss Edna Keene, president, reports were rendered by the various committees. The social com- mittee reported on the arrangements made for a sociabie to be given soon. Mr. Thom- @s, delegate to the various general meetings held In Washington, made a lengthy report on the work mnappeg out and prescribed by the higher order. The proposition to found a junior society for the young folks of Brightwood was made and favorably re- Ported, but no active steps taken. Wednesday evening the Social Club of the young people of Brightwood Park was hos- Pitably entertained by Miss Maggie McEI- wee at her home, on Flint street. An elec- tion of officers for the club“ took place, in which Miss Virgie Brown was chosen presi- dent and Miss Maggie McElwee treasurer, these officers being sufficient for the pres- ent. A very delightful evening was spent in games. After the serving of the refresh- ments the party broke up, and each guest received a merry good-night from their Uttle hostess. The Commissioners have ordered a hy- drant to be placed at the corner of Shep- herd road and Brightwood avenue; also a sewer waste pipe to carry off the water. Mr. Clayton of Washington is building a large twelve-room house on the corner of 8th and Flint streets. Mr. L. W. Edmonston of Washington, with his family, are occupying one of the Newman row of houses on 8th street, Pet- worth subdivision. All of these houses, with possibly an exceptién of one, are now occupied. At the recent conference held in Balti- more of the Methodist Episcopal Church South Rev. F. H. Shipley was returned here.
