10 THE EVENING STAR, MONDAY, APRIL 8, 1895-TWELVE PAGES. SUBURBAN NEWS ANACOSTIA, Yesterday Palm Sunday was observed in the Roman Catholic and Episcopal churches at Anacostia with impressive eervices. The concert by the Colgate University Glee, Banjo and Mandolin Club, which was given at the Masonic Hall on Satur- day night, was one of the finest affairs of the kind which has ever taken place in Anacostia. The large audience room was filled, a great number of the best people of Anacostia, East Washington Heights, Congress Heights and other suburban vil- lages being present. The program offered many varied features, and where every number was so charmingly rendered it is difficult to particularize. Each selection was encored, but the applause which fol- lowed the performance of the “Phantom Band” and “Massa's in the Cold, Cold Ground” was more pronounced than that of any other portions of the concert, and Was so long continued that it was with difficulty that the succeeding number could be taken up. Other numbers which elicited encores were “The Night is Still,” “Colgate University Waltz,” ‘Serenade,’ “Mrs. Winslow's oSothing Sirup, ‘Fra Diavolo,” “Mikado Potpourri,” Tannhauser; “Ca- [tee de Concert,” “March and Schneider’s nd.” The club comprises thirty-two members, all of whom are theological stu- dents. The concert was under the direction of the following leaders: J. B. Davis cf Glee Club;.G. A. Grove of Banjo Club; L. J. Caldwell of Mandolin Club, and A. R. Walker, manager. Rev. Dr. L. B. North, pastor of Garden Me- morial Church, delivered a sermon yester- day morning on “The Fulfillment of Pro- phecy,”" and at night he preached on “The Triumphal Entry Into Jerusalem.” The Christian Endeavor meeting was led by Mr. H. Norman North. The topic was “Things to Be Considered. Miss Theda North, who has been visiting friends in Baltimore, has returned home. Mr. W. D. The result, to say the least, was very gratifying, and a round sum was added to the fund in hand. Mrs. G. C.
