10 THE EVENING STAR, FRIDAY, APRIL 5, 1895-TWELVE PAGES. ee SUBURBAN NEWS ANACOSTIA, It Is altogether probable that within a day or two there will be placed, by order of Postmaster Willett of Washington, a letter box and a package box near the cor- ner of Harrison and Monroe streets, Ana- costia, and that the letter collector who gets the mail from the boxes at the corner of 11th and M streets southeast at 9 pan. will be directed to extend his trip so as to include the boxes in Anacostia. This is re- garded as the first step toward relieving the people of Anacostia from the disad- vantage of the antiquated mail arrange- ments which they have had for such a long period, and which, it is said, have had no improvement during the last fifty years. The postal authorities who have looked into the matter since the subject began to be agitated a few days ago have expressed themselves as amazed at the state of affairs which exists in the mail service be- tween Washington and Anacostia, and are surprised that better facilities should not have been asked for by the citizens of the latter place long ago. Mrs. M. M. North, who represents the man's Relief Corps of Anacostia on the national committee on patriotic instruction, has secured the co-operation of the public school authorities in introducing the ritual on that subject and flag salute adopted by the Woman's Relief Corps, auxiliary to the Grand Army of the Republic, into Van Buren School, and there is every reason to believe that ‘she will be instrumental in achieving success in this part of the Dis- trict of Columbia. Gunner John Walsh, one of the most ac- cemplished of the warrant officers in the Wnited States navy, and who has a number of relatives in Anacostia, has been ordered y Herbert to take charge of the n river, a few ostia, Mr. Walsh has serve @vernment as a rant officer in t every portion of the world. He is at present on duty at the Washington navy yard, but will shortly assume his new duties. Mr, Walsh's new field of duty is regarded as very desirable, the official hold- ing the ce being supplied with a furnish- ed resi¢ by the govern- ment, in addition to which there is a con- siderable tract of ground on which vege- tables y be raised at his disposal. of Mr. Georg jes, a well- rehant of Anacostia, for whom & warrant on the charge of maintaining a filthy stable was sworn out by Health In- Spector Beaumont, has been nol prossed at the request of Health Officer Woodward, Mr. Pyles having promised Dr. Woodward that he would have the dirt complained of removed daily. Little Hattie Berkley Killed by a Fall From a Bicycle. A shocking accident occurred yesterday afternoon on Capitol Hill which resulted in the almost instant death of a pretty Uttle school girl. The victim of this sad occurrence was Hattie Berkley, the thir- teen-year-old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. ‘Thomas Berkley of 723 10th street south- cast. About 5 o'clock in the afternoon Hattie Berkley was riding merrily about the streets on a bicycle which she had just borrowed from some beys who were play- ing nearby. They had been trying to ride it in turn, but finding it too big for them willingly entrusted it to the little girl, who said she thought she could ride it all right. It seems that the machine belonged to a boy named White, and had been taken from him Wednesday evening by some of his playmates in a spirit of fun. Mr. J. A. Bury had been asked to keep a lookout for the wheel, and, thinking that the one Hattie was :iding was possibly the one wanted, he cailed to her to stop. Evidently she thought it was some of the boys calling to her, and laughingly called to them to say et if they wanted it they must catch her rst. A Fatal Fall. She was riding along the north side of the parking, in the middle of the, avenue near Oth street, when a big, heavily loaded brewery wagen came driving by. Hattie Was not very expert with the wheel, and her attempt to pass, going between the wagon and the parking, was what led to the fatal aceident. She had pacsed the horses, when her wheel swerved and she seemed to lose control of it. Probably her foot slipped on the pedal, but at any rate it fell to one side, toward the wagon, and she herself fell to the pavement with great force. She was just tn front of the rear wheel, and at first it was thought that it had passed over her body, but the bruises that were found about her afterwards would seem to contradict this, and probably she was just pushed along by the wheel The wagon was one belonging to the -Na- ticnal Capital Brewing Company, and was driven by William Schaefer, who lives at 2005 9th street. He stopped his wagon in- stantly, but not until the little girl's cloth- ing had been torn and her body badly bruised. The accident was witnessed by a number of people, who considered that it was in no sense the fault of the driver, but an accident pure and simple. Dr. Brum- mett and Mr. Bury, who were standing near, ran forward and picked up the poor little body. Life was not extinct, although the child was unccnscious, and it was evi- dent even then that nothing could be done to relieve her. She was carried into Dr. Brummett’s office, and Mrs. Berkley was summoned. Within ten minutes of the time of the accident she died in her moth- er’s arms, without having recovered con- sciousness. Result of Accident. Coroner Hammett viewed the body short- ly afterward at the Berkley home, on 10th street. From the nature of the injuries Dr. Hammett decided that the wheel did not pass over the child, and upon close ex- amination he found a small fracture at the base of the skull. It was evident that she had died from concussion of the brain. The coroner decided that an inquest was not necessary, as the testimony of eye witnesses clearly exonerated Schaefer from all responsibility. Schaefer was put under arrest and taken to the fifth precinct sta- tion, but when the lieutenant heard the re- sult of the coroner's visit to the house he released the man without any delay. Schaefer has been working for the company but a few weeks and was formerly a con- ductor on the Brightwood electric railway. The dead girl was a very bright child and was a pupil at the Esputa Hall public school. She was very popular with her playmates and friends, and her death has caused sincere sorrow in the neighborhood. Mr. Berkley is a machinist, but has been out of employment for some time past. ee TO PREVENT LEAKS. Changes Made by Secretary Morton in State Agencies. Secretary Morton, In order to prevent the monthly grain reports of the Agricultural Department from getting to speculators in advance, has made changes in forty-four of the state agencies and further meas- ures will be taken to prevent leaks. Re- cently Secretary Morton tricked the spec- ulators by a trap laid to discover whether they were obtaining information from the department by underground channels. He arranged that figures should be placed where they could be obtained by two for- mer employes of the department, who were suspected of collusion with brokers, which indicated that the forthcoming re- port for March would show that the sup- ply of wheat in the United States was 154,000,000 bushels. Soon afterward he learned by a telegram from Chicago that speculators there were predicting that the report of the department would show the wheat supply to be 154,000,000 h The March statement, however, appeared @ next day and showed the stipply to be 000,000, Instead of 154,060,000 bushels. Secretary Morton says that any pretended advance information, which may leak out in the future is likely to be equally unre- liable. = The Montere Cruise. SeCretary Herbert has received from the chamber of comme of San Francisco a protest against the action of the Navy De- partment in sending the Monte espe- designed for the protection of the Pacific coast cities, and almost the only armbred naval defense there, away to a station. |This refers to the order Monte mmander to proceed te Cailao, . Secretary Herbert has replied to the protest by stating that the ship has been ordered simply to make a cruise in the Southern Pacific waters, and that the Department does ndt contemplate attaching her permanently to a foreign station. ——___--e Japanese Contract Laborers. In a report to the State Department Ellis Mills, United States consul general at Hon- olulu, announces the arrival there on March 14 ef the German ship Independent, with 624 Japanese contract laborers, 111 being women. The men are under contract to work at $12.50 per month, and the wo- men at $5. - The Contractor Again Behind. The contfactor for building the great timber dry dock at the New York navy yard, Mr. Gillies, is again behind with his werk, according to the reports made to Secretary Herbert, and he is to be called to Washington to explain. The reports show that work on the dock, which is al- ready very far behind time, has been en- tirely. suspended, and the Secretary has called on the contractor to show cause by next Monday why his contract should not be annulled. o-____—_ Oleomargarine ses Compromised. ‘The Secretary of the Treasury has re- cently comprcmised with a large number of violations of the oleomargarine law in Chicago.
