The’ movement to secure better mall fa- cilities for the residents of Anacostia and vicinity, mention of which was made in The Star of yesterday, bids fair to be crowned with success and a disadvantage under which the pecple of that portion of the District have labored for many years removed at an early day. The Anacostian who has interested himself in the matter yesterday had interviews on the subject with Acting Second Assistant. Postraaster Gen. Stone, in whose department the remedy for the existing truuble is to be found, and with Postmaster Willett and Assistant Postmaster Sherwood of the Washington Post office. An official of the Post Office Department who was present at the interview with Mr. Stone said it had long been a matter of surprise to him, that Anacostia was not made a branch of the Washington post office years ago, and mail facilities enjoyed by the people of Anacostia and vicinity, such as are furnished by the Post Office Department to the residents of Chevy Chase. Lrookland, Tenleytown and other suburban places adjacent to Washington. ‘The movement has the hearty support of both Postmaster Willett and Assistant Postmaster Sherwocd, who have -promised to extend all the aid that is in their power. An official meeting of the board of direc- tion of the Anacostia Methodist Episcopal Church was held last night. Presiding El- der Rev. Luther B. Wilson, D. D., occupied the chair. An interesting report. in refer- ence to the great revival now in progress at Congress Heights M. E. Church was made by Mr. Robert H. Jordan, evangelist, who is in charge of the congregation. A second lecture on Rome will be deliver- ed at the Anacostia Baptist Church tonight by Prof. A. P. Montague, dean of the facul- ty of Columbian University, Washington. Rabbi L. Stern expected to lecture at the church tonight, but has been prevented by vrlooked for circumstances. The members of the Ladies’ Aid Society af Garden Memorial Church are holding an all-day meeting today, at the residence of Mrs. J. H. Simpson, Capitol View. A meeting of the Citizens’ Association of Hillsdale will be held tonight at the resi- dence of Vice President James L Johnson, on Nichols avenue. There is considerable business to be transacted, as the associa- ticn intends to ask the District Commi sicners for a number of improvements, which’are greatly needed. Charles Searle, colored, of Hillsdale, who was Stricken with paralysis while at work on a street sweeper in Washington on Mon- day night, died yesterday at the Emergency Hospital. His funeral will take place to- morrow, and the interment will be made in Hillsdale cemetery. ‘The inclement weather of yesterday pre- vented the out-door meeting for the organ- ization of the Anacostia Base Ball Club, but the following selections have been made by those interested for the positions named: Leo Gertman, captain and manager; Percy V. Keating, catcher; Frank Eno., pitcher; Edward Dony, center fieid; Isaac Been, right field. BRIGHTWOOD. Last night the hall known as Sheridan Hall, located within the grounds of the Soldiers’ Home, was crowded to the doors, the occasion being an entertainment given by local amateur talent under the manage- ment of Mrs. Samuel Hollidge, for the ben- efit of charity. The program, quite a long one, was interspersed with music, rendered by th2 Soldiers’ Home band, and fancy dancing, gracefully executed by the little pupils of Miss Clara Stevens’ school. Al- though on account of the inclement weath- er a number of those who were to have aided in the benefit were unable to attend, nevertheless the affair proved to be a social as well as a financial success. Among those who received especial commendation in aiding to swell the fund in aid of the charity were Miss Garlinger in her rendering of such de- lightful music and Mr. L. A. Reinburg for his Inimitable exhibition of burlesque, with the marvelous feats of Mr. Harry Park in fancy bicycle riding. A consecration meeting of the Christian Endeavor Society was held on Sunday at Emory Chapel. Miss Stella Shipley led and received responses from each member present on the subject, “Christ's Yoke,” A very entertaining feature of,the evening was the singing. Next Tuesday evening a business meeting, conducted by Mr. Jno. Keene, will be held. Ruth Chapter, Order of Eastern Sta held its regular bi-monthly meeting at Masonic Hall on Tuesday evening,at which the degrees were conferred on two candi- dates for membership. After the work of degree conferring was through with re- freshments were served and an enjoyable evening was spent, the most entertaining feature of which was the vocal music. Among the visitors present were Mr. and Mrs. Okey, Mr. and Mrs. Shields, Miss Gol- den, Mrs. Dodge and Miss Crozier of Electa Chapter; Anacostia, and Mr. Bohrer of Na- omi Chapter, Washington. The Hamline prayer meeting held last Friday night at the home of Mrs. Mary M wee, on Flint street. was led by Mr. Tatton, who conducted the discussion of the subject, “Spiritual Power." The Rev. Mr. Greybill of the M. E. Church South was present aid delivered an interesting address on some of his experiences in the ministry. The next meeting will be held at Mr. Thomas’, Flint street, in Brightwood Park. Mrs. W. E. Nalley and Miss Nannie Nal- ley have gone to Texas, D. C., to be pres- ent at the birthday party of Mrs. Nalley’s niece, Miss Gertrude Abbott. Mr. and Mrs. Edwin Perry, who have been occupying the cottage on the 14th street road, owned by Mr. Collins, have moved into one of the new brick houses on Illinois avenue, built by Diller Groff. The board of town commissioners met last night at the office of Justice Carr. A rumber of bills were ordered to be paid. The treasurer was instructed to collect the amount due from abutting property owners for improvements made on Maryland ave- nue. The road committee was authorized to purchase 3,000 Belgium blocks, at $6 per thousand. This committee was also au- thorized to have Wing Rest avenue graded and graveled from Wine avenue to Colum- bia road, and to make certain repairs on Melrose avenue. The clerk was instructed to communicate with the officials of the Baltimore and Ohia Railroad Company, and ascertain when they intended to lay the promised pavement on Maryland ave- nue near the station. Messrs. Aman and Carr were appointed as a committee to ex- amine the sidewalk on Marion street, and to report the cost of repairing the sant at the next meeting. Messrs. E. A. Fuller and E. P. Holcombe of Hyattsville and Chas. Earl of Riverdale, all students of thé Georgetown Law Uni versity, were admitted to the bar of Upper Marlboro’ last Monday, after passing a very creditable examination before a com- mittee, composed of ex-Judge Chew, States Attorney Brandt and C. C. Magryder. . ——.—__. FALLS CHURCH. A committee from Washington, headed by Rev. P. C. Steele and representing the superintendents of the junior societies in the Christian Endeavor Union for the Dis- trict of Columbia, was here last Thursday seeking a location for establishing a sum- mer home for the poor children of the so- cieties in Washington. The committee had previously visited Vienna and had almost decided in favor of locating the home there, but after looking around here and noting the many advantages, at once clos- ed a contract for the rental of the resi- dence of Mrs. Maggie Brown, near the depot. The proposition of the societies is to send out from the Ist of May to the Ist of October ten poor children at a time, who shall be given an outing of two weeks. Each band will be in charge of one of the superintendents of the union, and- all ex- penses are to be paid by the union. This scheme will give a two weeks’ outing to over one hundred children. During the summer an excursion will be given by the societies, to enable the members to visit the home. The membership of these Junior Erdeavorers numbers about two thousand in forty-eight societies, Mr. L. 8. Brown, general passenger agent of the Southern railway, who was here last Friday night as the guest of Mr. L. B. Parker, will arrange for four trains daily over the W. and O. division during the summer, commencing about the 15th of April. Mrs. Maggie Brown and children of Ham- ilton, Va., are visiting her brother-in-law, Mr. J. W. Brown. ‘Mr. H. M. Newcomb and family are again occupying their summer residence here. Dr. Josepn N. Miss Mary Aisquith has gone to Charles- town, W. Va., for several weeks. Miss Urner of the Fair View Seminary is in Washington with friends. On Saturday Mr. Neil Dove, who was arrested a few days ago, and- lodged in jail at Rockville on a chafge of robbery, waived a hearing before Justice C. W. Crawford; and in default of $300 bail for his appearance at the November term of court, was again remanded to jail. Miss Eva Brady is seriously ill at her home at Redland. Miss M. Walter Kinsey, while at work ut the stove at the residence of Mr. fames E. Garrett, came near being terribly burned, her clothing taking fire and burn- ing to a considerable extent before the flames were extinguished. Dr. James L. Lodge occupied the pulpit of the M. E. Church South on Sunday morning, in the absence of Pastor Henry, who is attending the annual conference in Weshing*on. A meeting of base ball lovers was held on Saturday evening. Mr. Archie Aisyuith was made ‘hairman of the meeting. The recrganization of the town club was de- cided upon Messrs. Frederick C. Ward, Thomas M. Owen and R., Dorsey Trundle were appointed a commiitee to formulate by-laws by the next meeting. Dr. Israel Warfield was selected as manager of the club. A number of new men have signified their desire to sign with the team for the season. The Epworth League services at Epworth Church were largely attended Sunday evening, it teing the occasion of a fra- ternal visit by the Epworth League of the M. E: Church South. Mr. Morris Crawford corducted the services. The connection of the Sandy Spring téle- phone line with the Montgomery Telephone Company line of this place was effected cn Monday. Also the connecting line with the Boyd’s telephone line is rapidly near- ing completion, so that in a few days Gaithersburg will have direct telephone ccrnection with nearly every principal town in the county. ———— Total Circulation."
