FENCIBLES WILL GO The Memphis Trip Formally Decided on Last Night Champions to Defend the Galveston Cup, Although Somewhat Handi- cupped—Other Companies at Work. ‘The National Fencibles are going to Memphis. Although the champions re- ceived a challenge sometime ago to drill for the championship cup from the famous Chickasaw Guards, they have been in a state of doubt. The company drilled each evening last week, but owing to the inabil-. ity of the majority of the old and experi- enced men to take the trip a feeling of un- certainty has been most noticeable about the armory. All doubt is removed, however, for at a fneeting last evening the Fencibles fermally decided to go to Memphis and de- fend the cup. It was intimated that at the coming drill the Fencibles will make their final appearance in interstate competition. Capt. Domer and his men have aroused their latent enthusiasm, and this evening mean to renew drills with unusual energy. The team which is to do battle for the com- pany will be selected Monday next, and thereaiter be worked without change. First Lieutenant Mosher, who now resides in New York, will accompany the team, salthough it will be impossible for him to join the Fenclbles until a few days before the departure for the Tennessee city. Sec- ond Lieutenant Mortimer will not go. Capt. Domer next Monday will designate the man who will act as second lieutenant on the trip, as well as the full complement of non-commissioned officers. Galveston Cup. In an official circular Adjutant General W. H. Mabry of Texas, as trustee of the “Galveston Semi-Centennial Championship Cup,” now in the possession of the National Fencibles of this city, and as per paragraph 8 of the rules governing the cup, certified to by J. W. Burson, as secretary, Galves. ton, ‘Tex., June 15, 1889, has formally recog- nized that the interstate drill and encamp- ment to be held at Memphis, Tenn., comes within the purview of the paragraph re- ferred to. Therefore, Adjutant General Mabry has declared that the “Galveston Semi-Centen- nial Champior:ship Cup” is open to compe- tition for possession by troops attending the interstate drill and encampment at Memphis, Tenn., between May 11 and 21, 1895. The military company winning the cup, according to Adjutant General Mabry, will be required to hold itself subject to the rules governing the possession of the cup, and bind itself to a strict observance there- of. Col. R. H. Allen of the military ad- visory committee of the interstate drill and encampment of Memphis, Tenn., in connec- tion with the judges of the military drill for the championship cup, has been author- ized to award the cup to the company which is entitled to it, such company to be known as the “Champion Military Organ- ization of the United States,” a title won by the National Fencibles at Omaha in 1892, and at Little Rock in 1804. To Go Ahead. Col. Allen will address a letter to the National Fencibles, requesting that they fcrward to him the Galveston champion- ship cup, that he may place it on exhibi- tion in Memphis. In compliance with this request, the Fencibles in all likelihood will send the cup, which now graces their arm- ery, to Col. Allen during the latter portion ef this month. Heretofore it has been the custom of the champions to carry the cup with them when journeying to the scenes of intetstate drills, and not send it ahead. It is probable that Memphis will give over one night of her season of spring festivities to a grand illuminated pageant. The plan, as suggested, provides for a series of floats representing war in all ages, a theme which it is thought will be especially interesting to the thousands of soldiers who will be in Memphis at the time of the big encampment. The Chickasaw Guards, through Capt. W. H. Kyle, have formally entered the in- terstate drill, and posted their forfeit of $50. The “Chicks” are the first company to post the forfeit. The Morton Cadets are working hard, reth as regards the drill team and the benefit entertainment, which is to be held in Metzerott Hall April 19. A number of cabinet, diplomatic and senatorial ladies, i.cluding Mrs. Lamont, Mine. Romero, Mrs. Carlisle, Mrs. Schofield, Mrs. Gorman, Mrs. Field, Mrs. Brewer, Mrs. M. M. Park- er, Mrs. Fred McGuire, Mrs. J. C. Breck- inridge and Mrs. Ruggles, will act as pat- ronesses for the entertainment. Complete teams of the Hibernian Rifles and the Cor- coran Corps are being put through the rrovements prescribed in tactics with the greatest care. Business Done by the Executive Com- mittee Last Evening. A meeting of the executive committee, Local Council. Brotherhood of St. Andrew, was held at the residence of the chairman, Mr. P. B. Pierce, last evening. On motion of Mr. Looker of Georgetown, Rev. A. M. Hilliker, assistant rector of Epiphany Church, was made curator of the brotherhood literature, and Is to distribute the pamphlets according to his judgment. This move is the outcome of the recent agitation in regard to the attitude of the church toward the workingman, and is ex- pected to produce some good results. Mr. Henry C, Parkman, the treasurer, said that he had received a communication from a gentleman, offering to don: lot for a site for an Episcopal church at Fort Myer. As the church would be located on Virgi soll, the letter was referred to the Local Council of Alexandria for action. Vice President Bryan gave an interesting report of the service heid under the spices of the brotherhood at Fort Myer last Sun evening. Col. Cecil Clay delivered the ad- dress, At the next mass meeting, which will take place at St. John's, Georgetown, each chapter will be called upon to report what its methods are for securing the attendance of non-church going men. Mr. Henry C. Parkman has resigned as corresponding secretary and treasurer of the Local Council, and will go to East Las Vegas, New Mexico, to undertake mi work there. E. Mr. Par! man has been prominently identified with the brotherhool movement in this city since its inception and is well known in brotherhood circles at large. He is at pres- ent in charge of the Mission of the Good Shepherd, on H street northeast. The Firm Released. Assigneez Henry F. Woodard and Lyman A. Littlefield have granted a deed of re- lease to Messrs. William Craig and William P. Harding, trading in furniture near F and 13th streets northwest as Craig & Harding, from their deed of assignment cf January 12, 1895. The deed of release re- cites that the firm secured the terms of the release from the creditors, who held a meeting January 24, 1805, and that the ereditors have been paid the stipulated sum, so that the release van be placed on record. ———— A Row Burned. An alarm turned in at 11:20 last night from box 426 for fire in one of a row of small frames on Half street between M and N southwest. The flames leaped from house to house and the row of five was de- stroyed. GETTING DOWN TO WORK High School Companies Preparing for Ex- hibition Drills, The Program of Movements Has Been Issued—A Suggested Postpone- ment—Some Changes. For the past two weeks a change has been creeping over the drilling of the vari- ous companies composing. the High Cchool regiment. Now, the smart young captains may be seen giving their orders in sharper and more business-like tones, and the sub- alterns seem to view every movement with eyes on the watch for mistakes. The rea- son for all this lies in the fact that the official program for the annual exhibition drill, which is to take place on the lith and 18th of next May, has ‘been promul- gated, and the officers have been spurred into increased activity thereby. The pro- gram is somewhat different from that of last year, and will probably take ‘more time to go through. . Here it is: Part 1—The arms will be stack- ed, the company marched a few paces to the rear, and the following movements without arms executed—setting up exer- cises, Nos. 1, 2, 4, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, 14 and 16. Then first, the right and left hand salutes 2 (by the numbers) facings (right and left); 3, about face; 4, rest; 5, at ease; 6, change step; 7, to the rear; 8, by the right and left flanks, from direct step; 9, out; 10, mark time; 11, short step; 12, double time; 13, short step (double time); 14, marked time (double time); 15, change step (double time); 16, right and left steps; 17, back steps; 18, march to stack and re- sume arms. The principal reascn for making the drills so long and varied over those of last year lies in the fact that the companies this year are supposed to have more skill In the foot movements, and, in addition, the tivhe for preparation, has been ex tended by over a month. The National’ Base Ball Park is to be the scene of the contest, and it is e pected that the fleld will be in even bett ccrdition than it was last year. On the first day the first battalion, comprising fiv ccmpanies, will maneuver, and on the se ond day the four companies of the second battalion. This reverses the order of last year, and, if the weather is not more pro- pitious than it was then, the first battalion tay stand a good show to get a taste of wet grounds and damp grass. As yet the judges of the exhibition have not been selected, but as Capt. Con- stantine Chase of the fourth artillery is still at the Washington barracks, he will most likely be chairman of the board of judges. The other members will be from the cavalry at Fort Myer and from the fourth artillery. Unlike last year there will be no extra drills, and both parents and ¢: dets are glad of the fact. The company officers have been required to promise on honor not to give any of these drills. Com- panies will be obliged to take all their men on the field whether they number three fours or whether they number five. Changes in Officers.
